Yanagawa is a beautiful water city where 930 km of canals, unchanged since the Edo period, spread throughout the town and boats glide by. The Tachibana family has long stood alongside Yanagawa’s history. During the Edo period, Ohana began as a villa of the Tachibana family, lords of the Yanagawa Domain. From the Western-style building constructed in the Meiji era as an authentic guesthouse, you pass through to a grand 100-tatami hall—beyond which lies a magnificent garden composed solely of pine trees. With the renewal of our accommodation wing, we are being reborn as a space where you can more fully enjoy the appeal of cultural properties still preserved by descendants of this former daimyo family. Making use of our distinction as Japan’s only nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty where you can stay—a Ryokan with dining—we offer activities and moments that let you feel the history and stories of the daimyo family (the Tachibana family).

"Miyajima Grand Hotel Arimoto" is a Ryokan with a history dating back to the early Edo period, now run by its 20th generation. It is the closest accommodation to Itsukushima Shrine and the oldest accommodation in Miyajima, welcoming numerous guests over the years.In 1974, it opened a new annex on an elevated location behind the shrine, moving from its original site along Ari-no-Ura beach. The Ryokan has since been dedicated to providing hospitality to visitors of Itsukushima Shrine and guests from across Japan and overseas, allowing them to enjoy Miyajima's natural beauty and rich history. The Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, which became a Tenryo (directly governed land) in 1632, still vividly preserves the atmosphere of its past. In the first year of Ansei (1854), the founder of our Property, Iwakuniya Sobei, received permission from the magistrate's office to develop the area. He built a bridge over the Momiji River in front of the Property and established a teahouse by the stream as a resting place for travelers. This marked the beginning of "Miyajima no Yado Iwaso." Later, the bustling popularity continued, and the Property officially opened as a Ryokan in the early Meiji period. The main entrance building dates back to 1892 (Meiji 25), and the lobby was constructed during renovations in 1981 (Showa 56). Today, we draw natural Onsen, a rarity on the island, and offer accommodations in the main building, new building, and detached rooms. As a Ryokan nestled within a national park, we strive daily to ensure our guests can relax and enjoy their stay.
