Maruoka Onsen Takekurabe

The room was a spacious Western-style room with a modern Japanese touch. Since it is not a large Accommodation, there were few guests and the atmosphere was very calm. Not only was the food excellent overall, but the salt-grilled ayu was tender and delicious right down to the bones—we were completely satisfied! The staff were all kind, and we truly felt Fukui’s warmth. It was reasonably priced to begin with, and thanks to the “Fukui Prefecture Accommodation Campaign,” we were able to stay at an even better value.

There is no elevator, but since it’s only two stories, we decided it would be manageable and stayed here. The Onsen was a bit disappointing in that there was no open-air bath and no cold-water dispenser in the bathing area, but overall it was a cozy and pleasant Accommodation. Dinner started right away with simmered abalone. The tilefish matsukawa-yaki had beautifully crisped skin—crunchy and crackly—while the flesh was wonderfully juicy. It was so delicious that I was genuinely impressed. For sightseeing, Maruoka Castle was unfortunately under repair, but the collection at the Ippitsu Keijo Museum was inspiring. The day after our stay, we headed home via Eiheiji Temple. Since we used the “Horidashimono” campaign, we bought lots of seasonal Marseille melons as souvenirs at JA Renge no Sato near Fukui University School of Medicine. Highly recommended.
