Introduction of the Accommodation

Exterior

It all began with a single soba restaurant. A 7-room Accommodation featuring the traditional “Yakushi Soba.”

With a long history as a therapeutic hot-spring retreat, Shima Onsen is where Kotobukiya Ryokan began—as a single soba shop. Located just steps from Yakushido Hall and Gomusō-no-Yu, our story started by serving soba to Onsen guests visiting for worship and healing. That tradition has been carefully passed down even after becoming an Accommodation, now in its third generation. Using the same method since our founding and Shima’s delicious water, we make soba every day with heartfelt care. Today, you can enjoy this flavor at dinner. Please savor our traditional taste—crafted with meticulous attention and delicate finesse.

Enjoy Gunma’s local flavors with in-Room dining

At Kotobuki Ryokan, both breakfast and dinner are served in your Room. Dinner features a Japanese set meal generously prepared with seasonal seafood and mountain delicacies—enjoyable as a meal or paired with sake. Breakfast is a gently seasoned Japanese set meal to start your day comfortably. We hope you enjoy our soba, of course, but another recommendation is Joshu Beef, a Gunma specialty: beautifully marbled steak grilled on a ceramic plate. Raised in the lush natural surroundings of Gunma—between the clear streams of the Tone River and renowned peaks (Mt. Akagi, Mt. Haruna, and Mt. Myogi)— it is prized for its refined flavor, rich fat, and melt-in-your-mouth tenderness.

Lake Okushima

You can’t miss the stunning “Shima Blue”! Just a 10-minute drive to Lake Okushima.

When you stay with us, be sure to visit Lake Okushiman for sightseeing. This man-made reservoir, created by the Shima River Dam, is known for its breathtaking cobalt-blue surface. It is said that this color appears because red light is absorbed as sunlight passes through the water, leaving only blue and green light to reach our eyes (there are various theories). On the way to Lake Okushiman, at Hinatami Park, you can look up at the massive dam wall from below—an impressive structure with a height of 89.5 meters. This is also well worth seeing.
