Enjoy a luxurious getaway with our seasonal specialty buffet and skin-beautifying hot springs.

Founded in 1644, this Accommodation in Kaminoyama Onsen is renowned for its “beauty-skin waters.” Enjoy seasonal Yamagata cuisine at the buffet restaurant “KITCHEN TSUKIOKA,” renewed in 2024, along with a rice-cracker grilling experience, complimentary lounge drinks, post-bath ice cream, a kids’ corner, karaoke, table tennis, and other warm hospitality unique to the Accommodation.

  • As we were traveling by train this time, we used the Shuttle Service to and from the station. Unfortunately it was raining, so it was a big help both on arrival and departure. At the lounge drink service, we enjoyed a beer and also had fun trying our hand at grilling Dutch rice crackers. We were able to relax while looking out at the garden. Meals were served buffet-style in a bright, clean dining area, so we could enjoy a variety of dishes. The 100% buckwheat soba was delicious. We also enjoyed breakfast items like natto and nameko mushrooms. The freshly made rice balls were excellent as well.It was an Accommodation that made us want to stay here again next time.

  • On our first trip to Yamagata, we treated ourselves a bit and stayed as a family in the Honmaru Special Japanese-Western Room “Katsura.” From the bedroom window we could see the Japanese garden and distant mountains, and from the living room window the refreshing green of pine trees felt close enough to touch—such a calm, relaxing Room. There were two separate vanity areas and two toilets, plus an additional pantry-style sink area, which was very convenient. We were thrilled that both the in-room hair dryer and shower were ReFa. The amenities were exceptionally well stocked—honestly the best I’ve experienced among Hotels I’ve stayed at. The little duck placed on top of the bath towels was adorable, and we could really feel the thoughtful care for children. It warmed my heart. One thing that concerned us was how the bedroom door closed and the creaking sound—it seemed like it could be fixed with a small hinge adjustment, so that was a shame. Also, before arriving I had been slightly worried about getting to the Kitano-maru wing, but it turned out there was simply some distance—no steps or level changes at all—so it wasn’t an issue whatsoever. In fact, it was closer to the lounge, and each time we went to meals or to the Onsen, seeing views of the Japanese garden through the lobby and corridor windows felt fresh and wonderful compared with everyday life. That day we enjoyed cherry picking for our first time at a nearby fruit farm before heading to Hotel. After being warmly welcomed by everyone on staff, we still had some time before our Room was ready, so they held our luggage for us and we headed out lightheartedly for a walk around Kaminoyama Castle. After that, we also enjoyed drinks in the lounge during alcohol service hours as well as coffee time—and even karaoke. The buffet was delicious across the board: local dishes, freshly made soba noodles, sushi, milk tea pudding—everything was wonderful (and I ate far too much). We also appreciated how considerate staff were during dinner service. The Onsen baths were a little hot for my taste but very relaxing overall. The next day we visited Risshakuji Temple; access was easy, so I’m glad we chose Tsukioka Hotel as our base for sightseeing around Yamagata. The services were excellent overall—and more than anything else، throughout our stay we truly felt everyone’s spirit of hospitality، which made our time so comfortable۔ We would love to stay again۔

Kaminoyama Onsen, the Hot Spring of Beautiful Skin

The history of Kaminoyama Onsen is said to date back to 1458, when a monk named Gesshu from Hizen Province (present-day Saga Prefecture), while traveling, saw a crane soaking its injured leg in hot water bubbling up from a marsh and then flying away healed. This Onsen is also known as “Tsuru-sune no Yu” (Crane Shin Hot Spring).
