Introduction of the Accommodation

Exterior

Perched on a hill overlooking the lake, this private villa is a place to gather around vegetables and ingredients delivered by local farmers and share smiles with the people who matter most. Renovated from an old home built in the Showa era using Itakura, a traditional Japanese wooden construction method, the building grows richer in character with time.

Kasumigaura’s Cuisine and Local Culture

Kasumigaura is Japan’s second-largest lake after Lake Biwa. It has long been cherished as a vital local water source and an important fishing ground. At Suigoen, serving as a hub for Kasumigaura gastronomic tourism, we prepare and serve Ibaraki ingredients in our on-site private kitchen— seafood landed from Kasumigaura, vegetables and rice grown along the lakeshore, and fruits harvested from the region’s satoyama landscapes. Please enjoy them with Ibaraki sake, local wine, or our own craft beer.

From the window or garden, enjoy views of Kasumigaura—Japan’s second-largest lake.

In the early morning, you can watch the sunrise over the vast lake horizon. From summer to autumn, you can also see traditional sail-drawn fishing boats floating on the majestic waters of Lake Kasumigaura. A short trip will take you to the historic orchard village of the Chiyoda area, Mt. Tsukuba—one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains—the Kamiiso Torii Gate in Oarai rising from the waves, and a wide range of culture and history including traditional crafts from Kasama and Yuki.
