Blessings from the mountains flow in a continuous cycle. A place where fire and stillness are born.

A century-old building reborn as the boutique Hotel “mont,” standing in the heart of Nozawa Onsen, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and beech forests. Mountain blessings become snow, then water that nourishes the land, and eventually spring forth as Onsen. Forest trees, too, become the festival tower that lights the winter Dosojin Fire Festival, carrying local memories into the future. Inspired by these two opposing yet life-giving energies—“fire” and “water”—we have shaped our spaces, cuisine, and drinks. At our wood-fire restaurant, seasonal local ingredients are grilled to a fragrant finish; in your room, enjoy moments with village craft gin and regional sake. In this place where nature and culture flow in cycles, experience a stay where people and nature gently return to one.

  • Nozawa Onsen is famous for skiing, but in fact the spring, summer, and autumn seasons may be when mont truly shines.Unfortunately, it was too windy to ski, but taking my time exploring the village more than made up for it—I was completely satisfied.I stayed for two nights this time and became a total fan.First of all, the space is incredible—this is a renovated century-old building. The old pillars remain, while the lighting and sense of openness are perfectly balanced. The moment I stepped into my Room, I thought, “Ah—this is a place where I could spend hours.” I also loved that each guest Room has different art and a different layout (I even got to see my friend’s Room who stayed with me).Dinner centers around cooking over a wood fire. Surrounded by the crackling sounds and aroma of burning logs, one seasonal Shinshu ingredient after another arrives at the table. The way they bring out each ingredient’s flavor is spot on. The mushroom soup in particular was outstanding. Breakfast is Japanese-style as well, with Nozawana greens and miso flavors that hit just right—I didn’t get tired of it even two mornings in a row.The service also feels perfectly calibrated: they appear right when you want to ask something, and quietly give you space when you want time alone. You can feel the staff’s love for this area shining through—and it shapes the atmosphere of the entire Accommodation.Nozawa Onsen itself is genuinely fun even without snow.Touring 13 public baths, soaking your feet at Ogama’s footbath, hiking through beech forests, visiting Hokuryuko Lake—one night isn’t enough, so I recommend staying two nights at a relaxed pace.Day one: stroll around the village, enjoy dinner, then visit an outdoor bath.Day two: take a short trip farther out for another walk, soak again—and savor one more night by the wood fire. That feels just right.I’ll be back in another season. This is an Accommodation I’ll want to return to again and again.

  • With an exterior design that blends seamlessly into the local area, the interior—beautifully reflecting the unique character of Nozawa Onsen—was equally impressive, and we were able to spend a relaxing time surrounded by high-quality furnishings.Breakfast also featured local ingredients, allowing us to enjoy a wholesome and healthy meal.As it was the off-season, we were able to visit the area’s Onsen at a very leisurely pace. This is an Accommodation we would definitely like to stay at again.

An accommodation in Nozawa Onsen where fire and water flow together, carrying on its history and culture

Nozawa Onsen Village is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Here, the blessings of the mountains become snow and water that nourish the land, eventually welling up as Onsen. Meanwhile, trees from the forest are fashioned into festival towers lit with fire for Dosojin Matsuri, a traditional winter event passed down through generations alongside people’s prayers. “mont” is an Accommodation reborn from a century-old wooden Ryokan that once welcomed travelers in the heart of the village. Preserving its historic structure and design while blending in modern sensibility and comfort, it has been renewed not merely as a place to stay, but as a hub that carries the area’s living memories and culture into the future. In this land where opposing energies—fire and water—circulate, enjoy time wrapped in the scent of the forest, the hush of snow, and the warmth of a wood fire. We offer a stay where people and nature, past and future gently meet.

DINING
A wood-fired restaurant where you savor the flames and connect with the land

On the first floor, the main dining room features a wood-fire grill inspired by beech forests and festival flames. Gather around the flickering fire as we grill Shinshu meats, vegetables, and other carefully sourced ingredients—boldly yet delicately. Here, fire is more than a cooking method; it is the memory of this land itself. Its warmth and aroma bring Nozawa’s character to life through all five senses.
