A former Edo-period Omi merchant residence reborn as an Accommodation. Enjoy a special moment of relaxation with carefully curated cuisine and tea while experiencing history.

A culinary Ryokan located beside Hachiman-bori Canal in Omihachiman, Shiga—designated an Important Cultural Landscape—renovated from a sukiya-style building constructed in the late Edo period. Choose between the exclusive-use Main Building (one whole house) and a secluded annex limited to two parties per day. At “Japanese Cuisine Tamaru,” a renovated storehouse, enjoy Omi kaiseki featuring abundant ingredients from the Saba Kaido route and the Omi region. *Check-in times vary by Room. Please refer to each Room page for details.

  • I recently stayed at Ki no Ma. As my ancestors are from Omi, I visited this time and felt a joy as if I had met them by staying in a historic building connected to the legacy of the Omi merchants. The warm hospitality was wonderful, and above all, the meals were outstanding. The combination of fresh, carefully selected ingredients and the chef’s skill is truly moving. This is a highly recommended Accommodation, and I would definitely like to stay again.

  • From the moment we arrived, the courteous service made our stay very pleasant. Dinner was truly satisfying and captured the essence of Japanese cuisine. The breakfast, enjoyed in a Japanese-style room reserved for breakfast while looking out at the greenery, came with many carefully prepared side dishes—I ended up having several refills from the morning. If I may mention a couple of points: I would have liked a small bedside lamp for reading before bed. Also, if the bathroom curtain were a bit wider, I think it would help prevent shower water from splashing into the changing area. As it was the season of fresh green leaves, I would love to visit again during autumn foliage if I have the chance. The rice ball we received on departure was also very delicious. Thank you very much.

A secluded Accommodation hosting only three groups per day, newly opened in the birthplace of the Omi merchants.

Renovated from the former Kita Residence (“Kyu-Kita-tei”) along Hachiman-bori—Japan’s first area designated as an Important Cultural Landscape—this property has been reborn as a culinary Ryokan with three separate buildings. While preserving its Edo-period character, “Kyu-Kita-tei” offers private, independent spaces themed around wood and stone. Beyond the torii gate of Himure Hachimangu Shrine, a residence where an Otsu-e painter once lived quietly has been restored as “Bettei Kokonotsu.” The restaurant, created by renovating the storehouse of the Kita Residence, retains its original furnishings and timeworn marks, creating an atmospheric world apart. Enjoy a new style of travel—a retreat—through exquisite Japanese cuisine featuring local Shiga vegetables, Omi beef, and rice grown in our own paddies.

Surrounding Scenery

Hachiman-bori Canal and the Castle Town

Hachiman-bori is part of the “Omihachiman City Hachiman Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings,” known for its charming streetscape lined with earthen storehouses and historic homes, and often used as a filming location. Another highlight of this area is how the scenery changes with the seasons and between day and night. We recommend wearing the walking attire provided in your Room and taking a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood.
