NIPPONIA Sawara Merchant Town Hotel
Chiba Prefecture/SawaraA new way to enjoy where the entire town becomes a Hotel. Experience the ultimate time travel adventure.
In Sawara, the vibrant charm of the Edo period, which has faded with the passage of time in Tokyo, remains vividly preserved. It has been designated as the first Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in the Kanto region. As a dispersed Hotel blending seamlessly into the Edo-style atmosphere of Sawara, our accommodations are spread across the town, offering 4 buildings with 13 rooms. Each room provides a refined space that retains the essence of historical architecture. We also offer experiences that immerse you in the history of Sawara, such as enjoying locally sourced French cuisine that highlights the seasonal bounty of Chiba, the Kanto region's premier food treasure trove, and town walks in collaboration with nearby renowned shops and establishments. To enhance your journey, we provide guidance on surrounding tourist spots, including special experiences at Katori Shrine and visits to Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, allowing you to connect with history and enjoy a fulfilling and enriching time. Indulge in a luxurious stay that refreshes your spirit while reflecting on history and culture.
The meals were very delicious. The staff were kind and pleasant.I appreciated the bath’s reheating function. The bath salts were also great. It was a Room that beautifully renovated a traditional storehouse.
myera 6/22/2026I stayed at AOI as a solo traveler. The Room was bright, and I could look out over the garden, which made for a relaxing stay. The meal portions suited me well in my sixties, and everything was delicious—the sauces and dressings had a familiar Japanese-style flavor. Next time, I’d like to visit on a sunny day.

Introduction of the Accommodation

Just about 80 minutes from Tokyo to travel back in time to the Edo period. A nostalgic yet novel journey to experience history.
The historic merchant town of Sawara, a waterway hub that thrived during the Edo period connecting Tohoku and Edo, offers a nostalgic escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. With 600 years of history, its Edo-era streets invite you to immerse yourself in a timeless atmosphere. Our accommodations feature 4 buildings with 13 unique rooms scattered throughout the townscape. These include restored traditional structures such as former restaurants and storehouses, offering you a special stay surrounded by Japan's traditional architecture and echoes of Edo-period life. For dinner, enjoy French cuisine crafted with local sake, fresh ingredients from Chiba, and flavors inspired by the fermentation culture rooted in Boso-Sawara’s culinary heritage—the "kitchen" of Edo. We also offer exclusive experiences like visiting Katori Shrine, one of Japan's three great shrines. Discover an authentic journey through this historic town that can only be found here.
