About the Art at Portom International Hokkaido

With the concept of “Encounters and Color in Travel,” our property showcases a diverse collection of art and crafts, centered on Edo-period paintings and spanning through the late Edo (Bakumatsu) and Meiji eras. Highlights include ukiyo-e prints by Hokusai and Hiroshige; celebrated Edo masterpieces by Jakuchu, Hochu, and Hakuin; and fine crafts created from the Edo to Meiji periods. Kakizaki Hakyō: “Portraits of Ezo Chieftains”

A rare series of portraits showcasing cultural exchange in Ezo welcomes you. In the lobby, you will find portraits of Ainu leaders. The original work, “Ishu Retsuzo,” was painted by Kakizaki Hakyo, a chief retainer of the Matsumae Domain renowned for his artistic talent, and is now housed at the Museum of Fine Arts and Archaeology in Besançon, France.

When the elevator doors open on the guestroom floors from the 5th to the 8th, a monumental dyeing installation comes into view at once. Beautiful silk fabrics like delicate feathers, draped in color and light, are gifts from Japan’s natural world. These are works by “Senshi Yoshioka,” which you can encounter throughout the Hotel.
