Dinner is served to just three parties at this inn with only three rooms. You might imagine a quiet, lonely atmosphere—but what filled the space was lively conversation. “It’s the Mid-Autumn Moon tonight, so we’ll dim the lights,” said the mother. When she opened the door, you could hear waves loud enough to rival any background music; beyond the terrace, moonlight shimmered on the sea, with fishing boats’ lights in the distance. On our table were various handmade dishes prepared by the whole family. Everyone moved cheerfully between kitchen and dining room, while happy conversations flowed among guests. The father’s Japanese cuisine—after training at a long-established sushi restaurant near Akebonobashi and running a sushi minshuku in Kamogawa with his wife for over 30 years—and French dishes from their son, who returned home after 11 years of training at Hotel New Otani. Even the porcini mushrooms were locally sourced.“Destination restaurant” may be today’s buzzword, but for me this place suits me better—and makes me want to come back more—than certain well-known spots deep in Toyama’s mountains or in Nirasaki. Reservations are easy to get, and it’s only a 90-minute drive from central Tokyo.
