  • I have stayed at many Accommodations in Hakone, and I think this is the best of them all. This time, I requested a food-and-drink pairing, and both the cuisine and the selections of alcohol were outstanding—the drinks truly brought out the flavors of each dish. Thank you to all the staff for welcoming us with exceptional hospitality.I purchased the wine you recommended right away.We visited to celebrate a birthday, and we would love to return again.

Introduction of the Accommodation

A Private Resort Nestled in the Tranquility of the Forest

Inspired by the concept, “A forest retreat beloved by John Kanaya,” this private resort opened on November 3, 2017 as an intimate hideaway with just 14 rooms set within a vast forest in Sengokuhara, Hakone. The property features 14 guest rooms including the concept suite “JOHN KANAYA Suite,” a dining venue and bar lounge that carries on the spirit of the former Nishi-Azabu restaurant “Seiyozensho John Kanaya Azabu” and serves French cuisine with subtle Japanese touches—enjoyed with chopsticks—and a garden terrace surrounded by nature. Each room’s distinctive bath is supplied with free-flowing Onsen water from Owakudani. Relax and enjoy Hakone’s high-quality Onsen, sourced from Owakudani, in the comfort of your room. With roots tracing back to Japan’s oldest Resort Hotel, we offer refined spaces and service that blend Japan’s beautiful traditions with the functionality of a Hotel—providing our guests with “a private moment to be freed from everyday life and rediscover themselves.”

Room
Experience ultimate relaxation in our luxurious forest room.

—Guest Rooms— Wood-and-stone interiors that harmonize stylishly with Hakone’s nature. Outside the window, wild birdsong and the rustle of leaves resonate like a concerto with the jazz you’re listening to. Offering exceptional relaxation and private comfort, our guest rooms come in a variety of styles. Every room features a private bath with free-flowing hot spring water direct from Owakudani. The milky-white cloudy water, famed as a “beauty bath,” feels silky-soft on the skin, and its hue changes over time.

Onsen
Your body and mind will unwind, and everyday life will melt away like bubbles.

—Onsen— All guest rooms feature a private natural Onsen bath. Enjoy the rare Hakone Owakudani Onsen—renowned for promoting beautiful skin and well-being—whenever you like, as many times as you wish. Unwind in your own secluded space and linger in a long, leisurely soak at your own pace. Each tub is crafted from the finest natural stone, and no two are alike. Whether it’s the luxury of soaking in an Onsen bath in a Western-style room, a new take on Japanese-style bathing, or an open-air bath with a sense of freedom, savor this celebrated hot spring to your heart’s content throughout your stay.

Restaurant
A supreme dining experience that carries on the gourmet legacy of a renowned restaurant.

—Dining— The main dining room, “Seiyozensho JOHN KANAYA,” carries on the legacy of “Seiyozensho John Kanaya Azabu” while continuing to evolve each day. In this modern restaurant adorned with a striking Black & Gold design, you can savor exquisite cuisine while enjoying views of fresh greenery or autumn foliage by the window, or in a private dining room (private room).

Garden Terrace
Stroll through an endless forest and enjoy a relaxing forest bathing experience.

—Forest Terrace— A “true” primeval forest just a short distance from the city. Since the Meiji era, the majestic peaks of Mt. Fuji and Hakone and their vast skies have drawn members of the Imperial Family, distinguished guests, and business leaders as a historic villa retreat. Moss-covered stone walls and cobblestone paths evoke Hakone’s long-standing villa tradition, while bell-like birdsong fills the air and rare alpine plants bloom through every season. Savor champagne at Forest Terrace, embraced by nature, and enjoy an unforgettable moment.

A New Story Woven by a Long-Established Inn in Hakone

—A forest retreat beloved by John Kanaya, where you can savor the changing seasons of Hakone. Leaves and treetops rustle in the breeze, and wild birds sing in soprano. Embraced by the stillness of the woods, a private Resort Hotel stands quietly. I had come to Hakone. For generations, renowned figures from culture, business, and politics have escaped Tokyo’s busy routine to relax amid its magnificent nature. Beyond its famous hot springs, Hakone’s history and elegance—shaped by its many high-end Accommodation options and villas—feel truly exceptional. It hardly seems possible that it’s only a 90-minute journey from central Tokyo. Even the blue sky feels closer here. The forests of Hakone seem to be celebrating my time of rest. The Hotel I am about to stay at is KANAYA RESORT HAKONE, a separate villa of Kinugawa Kanaya Hotel—whose roots trace back to Japan’s oldest Resort Hotel. Inheriting the traditions of this long-established Hotel while evolving into something new, how will KANAYA RESORT HAKONE welcome me? My heart was naturally racing with anticipation.

John Kanaya's Profile
The Legend of John Kanaya Senji, a Pioneer of Modernizing Japan’s Hotel Industry

How do you do? Nice to meet you. These were the first words John Kanaya Senji—also known as John Kanaya, who led the founding of Kinugawa Kanaya Hotel—spoke to his newborn grandchild. That day, Senji visited the hospital dressed strikingly in a pristine white morning coat and hat, cane in hand. Having traveled widely through Europe and North America in his youth and absorbed Western culture, he was every bit the gentleman—“dandy” suits him perfectly. “John” was Senji’s Christian baptismal name; he himself was Japanese through and through. He was the grandson of Zenichiro Kanaya, founder of Nikko Kanaya Hotel, renowned as Japan’s oldest Resort Hotel. Raised in a household that lived Western-style—even keeping shoes on indoors—and inheriting his family’s pioneering spirit, Senji trained at top-class hotels before becoming the first president of Kinugawa Onsen Hotel. He helped develop what was then one of the largest hotels in Kinugawa Onsen while also contributing to the growth of the wider Kinugawa area. He later served in roles including Chairman of The Japan Hotel Association, making major contributions to modernizing Japan’s hotel and tourism industries.
