This was my second stay at this Hotel, and everything was as perfect as ever.The hospitality is outstanding, and every member of the staff is truly impeccable.The interior design is tasteful, the meals are absolutely delicious, and I highly recommend this Hotel.Having lived abroad for many years and having had many opportunities to stay at top-class Hotels around the world, Kinugawa Kanaya Hotel is one of my favorites.

Sculptured Glass
"Sculptured Glass" is a type of stained glass technique. It features a three-dimensional design created by breaking and arranging extremely thick colored glass, about 5 to 6 cm thick, with a hammer. When light passes through, the glass's uneven surface interacts with the light and angles of the moment, changing its expression and enhancing a fantastical world. Within the premises of Kinugawa Kanaya, this sculptured glass can be seen in various places. These are works by French sculptor Gabriel Loire, rarely seen in Japan. The most striking piece is the ceiling artwork immediately upon entering the entrance. The "Dance of the Celestial Maiden," which welcomes visitors, was the final collaborative work commissioned by John to Gabriel upon the founding of the Hotel. For the motif of the piece, John chose the "Celestial Maiden Dance" from Nikko Toshogu Shrine. The combination of Eastern beauty and French art is truly a manifestation of his philosophy of "fusion of East and West." Although John passed away before witnessing the opening of the Hotel, he did have the chance to meet this celestial maiden. The celestial maiden statue reflects John's spirit of hospitality, as he eagerly awaited the founding of Kinugawa Kanaya more than anyone else. His spirit lives on, unfading, through Gabriel's masterpiece.

How do you do? Nice to meet you. These were the first words spoken to a newborn grandchild by John Kanaya, also known as John Kanaya Senji, who led the founding of Kinugawa Kanaya Hotel. On that day, Senji visited the hospital dressed in an eye-catching white morning jacket, a chapeau, and carrying a cane. Having traveled extensively through Western countries in his youth and absorbed Western culture, he was the epitome of a dashing gentleman. The "John" in John Kanaya Senji is his Christian baptismal name, though he was a pure-blooded Japanese. He was the grandson of Zenichiro Kanaya, the founder of the renowned "Nikko Kanaya Hotel," celebrated as Japan's oldest Resort Hotel. Raised in a household where living in shoes in the Western style was the norm, Senji deeply inherited his family's pioneering spirit. After honing his skills at top-tier hotels, he became the first president of "Kinugawa Onsen Hotel." He not only developed the Hotel, which was the largest in the Kinugawa Onsen area at the time, but also contributed to the growth of the entire Kinugawa region. Furthermore, he served as the chairman of the Japan Hotel Association and played a significant role in modernizing Japan's Hotel and tourism industries.
