In the spring of 2017, after about a year and a half of silence, a new chapter began. Founded in 1662. A history woven by Onsen waters—Edo, Meiji, Taisho, Showa, Heisei, Reiwa. Surrounded by magnificent nature, the scent of the waters lingers as artifacts from different eras and worlds add color and elegance to the Ryokan. Let your thoughts drift to the founder, Mannemon Matsuzaka. A long-established Ryokan beloved since the Edo period as an Onsen Accommodation—so renowned it even appears in ukiyo-e prints by Utagawa Hiroshige. From meetings between Takayoshi Kido and Takamori Saigo to a stay by Bunroku Shishi, leading figures of the Meiji era once gathered here. Since then, many guests—including members of the Imperial Family—have continued to visit. What captivates visitors is our rare, highly beneficial spring water found only here: it contains all three celebrated skin-beautifying types—sulfur springs, sulfate springs, and bicarbonate springs. Another reason is our abundant flow rate of 200 liters per minute. We adhere strictly to “100% free-flowing from the source,” with no added water, no heating adjustments, and no circulation. Moreover, the history of Hakone Ashinoyu is said to date back to the Nara period—more than 1,200 years ago. Now come and savor Hakone’s finest famed hot spring—a place cherished through time—and enjoy being part of its continuing story into the future.
This Accommodation has become more upscale in recent years and is now a bit of a splurge for me, so I visited this time to take advantage of a great deal. As always, the Onsen was wonderful, the meals were delicious, and the Room was spacious and very comfortable. I was also happy that you remembered my various requests from previous stays. Thank you to all the staff for your hospitality again—I’d love to visit again when I find another opportunity.

Location
Hakone Ashinoyu Onsen Matsuzakaya Honten is located at an elevation of about 870 meters, a quiet Onsen area surrounded by mountains. Ashinoyu, home to many historic sites dating back to the Kamakura period—such as stone Buddha statues and stone monuments—is one of the most historically rich areas in Hakone. Tokoan, where writers and artists gathered during the Edo period, is located within the grounds of Kumano Shrine next to our property. Ashinoyu lies along National Route 1, offering convenient access. Lake Ashi is about an 8-minute drive away.
Enjoy a 100% free-flowing, continuously fed Onsen, one of the few in Hakone, rich in fresh “Three Great Beautifying Spring” qualities. Ashinoyu Onsen—uniquely selected in Kanagawa Prefecture as a “National Health Resort Hot Spring Area,” a designation given to hot spring destinations recognized for their therapeutic benefits. Its mystical waters can change color depending on the weather and temperature, and gush forth at 200 liters per minute. Savor this renowned hot spring—celebrated since the Edo period as one of the Hakone Seven Hot Springs—for its rare mineral composition and restorative power, at your leisure.
Set on a 4,000-tsubo estate, the property features six distinctive buildings with a total of 21 guest rooms. From each building and bath area, enjoy views of a rustic garden and immerse yourself in the romance of history for an extraordinary stay. In spring, fresh buds; in summer, deep greenery; in autumn, vibrant foliage; and in winter, crisp air amid snowy scenery. Relax as the seasons change and spend a soothing moment that will make you want to take a deep breath.
A large public bath with a nostalgic atmosphere. Rooms with spacious sofas, and a private open-air bath where you can gaze at the forest and immerse yourself in nature’s melodies in an open, airy setting. Enjoy a relaxing soak to your heart’s content.
Dinner is our “Shukuba Kaiseki,” featuring nostalgic dishes with flavors inspired by the Meiji-era modernization. Breakfast is our “Traveler’s Breakfast,” including nourishing, body-friendly options such as barley rice with grated yam. Soothe your travel fatigue and fully enjoy these simple yet deeply flavorful meals.
In the guest lounge, you’ll find large, comfortable sofas and chairs, along with a curated selection of books—illustrated guides and novels—chosen around the theme “Hakone: Travel, Learning from the Past, and the Beauty of Nature.” Please relax with a drink in hand. In our nostalgic irori (traditional hearth) room, we offer classic games such as shogi, playing cards, karuta, Othello, a fishing game, and picture books—items that bring back fond memories.
