A stately main-building-style Accommodation nestled in Matsumoto’s secluded retreat. Enjoy the historic renowned hot springs of Asama and authentic kaiseki cuisine for a refined, relaxing getaway for adults.
Kikunoyu stands in Asama Onsen, a retreat of the castle town Matsumoto with a thousand-year history. Built in the dignified Honmune-zukuri style passed down in the Matsumoto region, it is a quiet hideaway for adults, rich in Japanese charm. A polished zelkova main pillar and curated artworks create a refined stay. After savoring the gentle feel of natural hot-spring waters in the open-air bath with a pleasant breeze, enjoy an authentic kaiseki course showcasing Shinshu’s seasonal bounty. Just 10 minutes by car to National Treasure Matsumoto Castle. Escape the bustle of everyday life and spend a soothing, restorative holiday.
The antique-inspired lobby interior was beautiful. The Room was also comfortable.Meals were served in a private dining room, and since it was next door, it was convenient. The food was delicious and at the standard level for this type of Ryokan. The Onsen is not large, but it wasn’t crowded, so I could relax and enjoy it.
ふらんす78 6/5/2026When I visited Zenkoji Temple to give thanks for completing the Saigoku Pilgrimage, I stayed at the nostalgic Asama Onsen, which I had last visited more than 40 years ago. I chose Kikunoyu, a historic Ryokan built in the traditional honmune-zukuri style. From parking on arrival, the staff kindly guided me into the building. The massive zelkova main pillar and heavy beams were breathtaking, and I was deeply moved by how magnificent the building was—exactly as rumored. Then to my Room: it was spotless, not a speck of dust anywhere. It felt like everything had been checked again and again. You can truly sense their high standards of hospitality and thoughtful attention to detail. After refreshing myself in the Onsen—known as a “beauty bath”—I headed to dinner. Hot dishes were served hot, and each course arrived at just the right time to match our pace. Using seasonal local ingredients, every dish in this kaiseki meal was carefully prepared with great effort, reflecting the high level of skill of the head chef and kitchen team. After dinner, I enjoyed another soak in the large public bath after it switched over for men and women, then went to bed. The next morning, I enjoyed another elaborate and delicious breakfast. At check-out, I had a pleasant conversation with the elegant proprietress (okami), who shared many stories with me. She then saw me off until my car disappeared from view. Kikunoyu truly lived up to its reputation as a long-established Ryokan—I left completely satisfied in both body and mind. Thank you so much for adding something special to my trip to Nagano.

Introduction of the Accommodation

Asama Onsen, the historic inner retreat of Matsumoto in Shinshu. Kikunoyu, a wooden Accommodation that preserves the traditional honmune-zukuri style. In serene Japanese-style surroundings, savor seasonal changes through kaiseki cuisine made with ingredients at their peak. Soak in the Onsen waters filling a spacious bath and enjoy a truly relaxing time.

Honmune-zukuri is a traditional style of farmhouse found mainly across the Matsumoto Basin. These large homes feature a gently sloped gabled roof, and at the tip of the triangular roof sits a huge “Suzume-odori” (a decorative deterrent). Inside our property, which incorporates this distinctive Shinshu Honmune-zukuri style, you can enjoy the region’s unique character—such as thick beams crossing both lengthwise and crosswise—along with the warmth of wooden construction.

Lounge
In the lounge, a beautifully polished zelkova main pillar and thick intersecting beams are complemented by the gentle fragrance of seasonal flowers. In the morning, please enjoy freshly brewed coffee here.
