- Amami Onsen Nanten-en
A Ryokan designed by Tatsuno Kingo, the architect of Tokyo Station, registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property.
The main building of Nanten-en was originally located in Sakai Ohama as "Shioyu Kazokuyu" and was relocated in its entirety to Amami, a place known for its natural Onsen, in 1935. It was then transformed into an Onsen Ryokan for pilgrims visiting Mount Koya. The predecessor, "Shioyu Kazokuyu," was designed by Kingo Tatsuno, a renowned architect of the Meiji and Taisho eras who contributed to many iconic modern architectural works. As one of the few remaining examples of traditional Japanese architecture, it continues to convey its historical significance. The former Koya Highway runs north to south, and the 3,000-tsubo Japanese garden, surrounded by the rich natural backdrop of the Kongō-Katsuragi mountain range, offers a picturesque setting. The garden, adorned with flowers blooming throughout the year and the chirping of wild birds echoing through the mountains, retains the timeless charm of a serene paradise.
Four of us women stayed in the Room called “Yomoyama.” As a corner Room, it had great views, and we loved the lush garden and the spacious Japanese-style Room set up as a summer tatami sitting area. Every attendant provided wonderful service, so we were able to relax and enjoy our stay. Dinner was thoughtfully prepared, and we enjoyed every dish. From 8:00 p.m., we took a walk in the garden to watch fireflies; since the weather was good, we saw many of them. It was a great trip where we could feel the charm of Japan in this historic and wonderful building.
yuko1949 6/13/2026There is nothing to complain about regarding the meals, but it was a bit hard to finish everything. We stayed at Seiryutei, and the Room had a charming, historic atmosphere while still being well equipped. The spacious, open-air bath had just the right water temperature, and we were able to relax and soak at ease. This was the most satisfying Accommodation we have ever stayed at, and it is at the top of our list of places we would like to visit again.

Introduction of the Accommodation

The garden-side Room is a corner Room, offering views of the "Japanese garden" extending across two sides. In winter, enjoy the "snowy scenery," in spring the "spring haze," and each season brings its unique charm such as "fresh greenery" or "autumn leaves." Relax in this tranquil space with your group or family, enjoying pleasant conversations.

Rich in natural radon, bathing enhances perspiration and metabolism, making it highly effective for health and beauty. Enjoy while gazing at the greenery.

The joy of Japanese cuisine lies in utilizing the natural flavors of carefully selected seasonal ingredients, with delicious taste, pleasant aroma, choosing appropriate tableware, and presenting beautifully. The chefs at Nantenyuen strive daily with monthly creativity.

The sunlight filtering through the shoji screens and the rich nature that changes with the seasons can be enjoyed from the Room.
