Established in Showa 2. A historic property in Kinosaki Onsen blending history and modernity, loved by Naoya Shiga.

"Kinokawa Onsen Registered Tangible Cultural Property Inn Mikiyama" is a Japanese Ryokan with a 300-year history, located in the heart of the nostalgic Japanese Onsen town, Kinokawa Onsen. Renowned author Naoya Shiga made this Property his regular stay, where his famous short story "At Kinosaki" was born. The wooden architecture, built in 1927 and recognized as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan, along with a 300-tsubo Japanese garden, retains its charm. In November 2013, the Property underwent a major renovation of its lobby, dining area, and large public bath, transforming into a modern Japanese Ryokan that blends history with contemporary design. From the Room's veranda, guests can enjoy the changing seasons in the garden, or lose themselves in a book in the library. After changing into a yukata, take a leisurely stroll to explore the local Onsen baths, and then savor the delights of the Sea of Japan paired with local sake in the modern dining area. This is where the true pleasures of an Onsen Ryokan, fulfilling your intellectual curiosity, await.

  • Thank you very much for taking care of us during our stay. We truly appreciate your accommodating our food allergies. The meals were absolutely delicious. The Ryokan baths, the private bath, and the public hot springs were all wonderful. It was a shame we couldn’t visit all of the public baths, but we’d love to come back and do a full hot spring tour next time!As for amenities, we didn’t have any particular issues, but I happened to forget my makeup remover and thought it would have been helpful if the Ryokan had one available. We’re grateful for the lovely time we had. Thank you very much.

  • With its charming willow-lined street and distinctive public bath-hopping, Kinosaki Onsen as a whole was wonderful, and we were extremely satisfied with our stay at Mikiya. The service was attentive and the food was delicious, and we also enjoyed blissful moments gazing at the garden from the Room’s veranda and from the rocking chairs in the lobby.

Shiga Naoya and Mikiyaya

In 1913, at the age of 30, after suffering a serious injury from being struck by the Yamanote Line, he visited Kinosaki Onsen for recovery and stayed at our establishment for about three weeks. During this time, he observed the deaths of three creatures—a bee, a mouse, and a newt—while reflecting on his own near-death experience, which inspired the creation of the masterpiece "At Kinosaki." Since then, he became a long-time patron, visiting us in various situations, whether alone for writing, traveling with friends from the Shirakaba group, or with his family. Although our establishment was once destroyed in the Great North Tajima Earthquake of 1925, the rebuilt Room from 1927 and handwritten postcards addressed to the owner of our establishment can still be viewed today.

Japanese Garden

This is a pond garden of approximately 300 tsubo, designed in a strolling garden style, incorporating the natural scenery of Mount Daishi and featuring a pond fed by the flow of the Daikei River that runs behind our facility. It still retains the appearance depicted in Naoya Shiga's novel "An'ya Kōro," offering both the serene daytime scenery with sunlight streaming through and the enchanting nighttime view illuminated by lights, allowing you to forget the passage of time. Enjoy the changing expressions of the seasons: the cherry blossoms of Kiyamachi Street in spring, the crape myrtle in summer, the autumn foliage and leopard plants in fall, and the snow-covered landscape in winter, all from the moon-viewing platform in the lobby or the veranda of your Room.

Amidst its aged appearance, there is a sense of venerable elegance and emotion. The historic and traditional Ryokan Mikiyasan cherishes the charm of the Kinosaki Onsen town, offering a nostalgic tranquility and sentiment reminiscent of ancient times within the profound nature of Tajima.

Hiiragi Hot Spring
A renowned hot spring with a history of 1400 years.

Kinosaki Onsen, said to have been discovered from the sight of a stork healing its wounds. During the Heian period, it was mentioned in the Kokin Wakashu, and in the Nanboku-cho period, it was recorded in "Masukagami." Enjoy this famous hot spring, cherished by city dwellers and literary figures since ancient times.

Notice from the Accommodation

  • About "Mikiya"

The building was constructed in 1927 (with some parts built in the 1940s) and is a wooden structure. The East Wing, where the entrance is located, is a rare three-story wooden building.
There is no elevator in the building. Rooms are available on the first floor, so please feel free to contact us if you wish.
Due to the traditional wooden structure, sounds from downstairs or next door may be slightly noticeable.
We kindly ask for your understanding and consideration.

    ■ With an 11 a.m. checkout, you can leisurely prepare for your journey in the morning.
    ■ To ensure your comfort, staff will not enter your Room except during guidance and futon laying, unless requested.
    ■ After breakfast, you may continue to relax on your futon. If you wish to have the futon put away, please inform the staff.
    ■ To preserve the charm of the wooden structure and ensure a peaceful stay, we only accommodate children of elementary school age and above. We appreciate your understanding.
    ■ You can enjoy strolling around town in a yukata, choosing from a variety of patterns (approximately 20 for women, 3 for men).
    ■ Free Wi-Fi is available in the lobby.

  • 【November 2013, Mikiya Reopened】

In November 2013, exactly 100 years after the author of the novel "At Kinosaki," Naoya Shiga, first visited our Ryokan, we undertook a major renovation of the Facility as the first step towards a new century. This transformation evolved into a modern Japanese Ryokan that harmonizes traditional charm with modern comfort.
    ■ Lobby: A serene space with a moon-viewing platform overlooking the garden
    ■ Library: A "bookshelf that makes you want to read," featuring a collection of all kinds of "books about books," from masterpieces by guests, beautifully bound books, to travel books by authors
    ■ Dining "Heihachiro": A modern space offering carefully prepared dishes of mountain and sea delicacies from Tajima
    ■ "Hiiragi no Yu": A large bath with an open ceiling, retaining the ambiance of guest rooms
    ■ Japanese-Western Room: A combination of a traditional Japanese room with a study alcove and a modern, comfortable bedroom
Additionally, we renovated the water facilities in some guest rooms.
