Kusatsu Hotel was established during the Taisho era as a Western-style "Hotel." During the Meiji period, Dr. Bertz, a German medical scientist, praised Kusatsu Onsen, attracting many foreign visitors to Kusatsu. Later, around Showa 27, the hotel was renovated into the current traditional Japanese-style Ryokan, but the name "Hotel" remained. The charm and spirit of hospitality from the Taisho era have been preserved to this day.
We stayed for two nights and had a wonderful time. In addition to the Onsen, we were soothed by two different types of baths. During the day, we enjoyed soba in Tsumagoi Highlands and made the most of our trip from Shiga Highlands to Yamba Dam. The proprietress kindly shared tips on how to enjoy Yubatake and suggested nearby scenic drives, which helped us have a truly fulfilling holiday. We also thoroughly enjoyed the TsuruTaro Art Museum on site. Everything was perfect, and we were completely satisfied.
華正樓新館がすき 8/18/2026The Room we stayed in had just been renovated, and we were very satisfied. As clearly stated at the time of Reservation, we could hear some noise from the neighboring room (or above), but since it’s basically an old wooden building, it felt unavoidable.The fact that there are only stairs was a bit tough when carrying heavy luggage, but otherwise getting around was fine. We chose a less busy time for the bath, so it wasn’t crowded. It would be nice to have a key locker where guests can leave their Room key.It might have been helpful to have clearer signage or guidance about nearby sightseeing spots. Even though Sainokawara Park is close by, we didn’t realize it and ended up saving it for our next visit. Overall, we were very satisfied with our stay.
