An accommodation nestled in a lush national park, featuring natural hot springs and gourmet highland cuisine.

Bandai-Asahi National Park spans across three prefectures: Fukushima, Yamagata, and Niigata. On the northern side of Mount Bandai, in the serene area of Urabandai and Obutaira, nestled quietly among the trees near Goshikinuma, lies "HOTELLI aalto." "Aalto" means "wave," and "Hotelli" is the Finnish word for "Hotel." Inspired by the desire to connect the rich Nordic lifestyle of living harmoniously with nature and the Japanese spirit of reverence for nature, Hotelli Aalto was created. Both the decor and the Property's services are rooted in the local culture of Urabandai and Aizu. By blending different cultures and lifestyles, it has emerged as a uniquely distinctive Property like no other.

  • This time, we invited our eldest son and his partner. It’s a small Onsen, yet never crowded, so you can relax and truly enjoy it. Above all, the food was delicious—they were completely satisfied with their one-night stay. Perhaps it’s because Fukushima’s ingredients are excellent, but the dishes made the most of them. They said every dish was wonderful. And breakfast: they may have had a bit too much to drink, but they were very pleased with a breakfast that gently soothed them. The day before, they stayed at a Japanese-style Accommodation around Zao, but they preferred Aalto’s cuisine. Even as I write this review, I want to go again. Every time we stay, there is always at least one memorable dish—and when we return next time, an even more impressive plate appears. Our eldest son drinks quite a lot, and he said the wine and other drink selections were extensive and delicious—so he ended up drinking too much without meaning to. We look forward to visiting again soon.

The Room is clean, and the air conditioning is set just right for a comfortable stay. All the staff are friendly and kind. Introduction of the Accommodation

Hotel

Full-scale reuse and evolution

The impressive wooden main building, with its large roof spreading like the wings of a phoenix, is a 40-year-old mountain lodge revived through the dedicated reuse efforts of three architects: Yoshihiro Mashiko, Toshikazu Kawai, and Shintaro Otake. The exterior design respects the surrounding environment of the national park, utilizing locally sourced timber and incorporating the region's climatic features, such as wind and light, into the building's structure. The interior extensively uses natural materials like plaster, employs eco-friendly adhesives, repurposes waste hot water for snow melting, adopts radiant heating, and operates on green energy. In July 2019, we expanded with an annex of four rooms and a lounge building facing the lake. While our respect for nature and our hospitality towards guests remain unchanged, Aalto continues to evolve.

Shoemaker's Stool
Shoemaker's Stool

At Aalto, we feature a variety of Nordic furniture. One highlight is the "Shoemaker's Stool," a simple yet natural Danish-made stool crafted from solid wood. Originally designed for milking cows, it gained popularity in the 15th century as a chair for shoemakers, allowing them to sit comfortably for long hours without fatigue. Regardless of body size, shape, or gender, everyone is amazed by its magical comfort, as if it were custom-made for their body. The seat gently cradles you, and the more you use it, the smoother the surface becomes, adapting even more perfectly to your body over time.

Back to the nature
Back to the nature

"Feel the beauty of nature with your own senses" is the message from the artist. The creator of the artwork displayed at the entrance is Maria Kullberg, a Finnish artist who has lived in Tokyo for 20 years. "Enjoy nature and the joy of connecting with people. Please turn off your mobile phones and keep them away during your stay. Feel with your senses just how beautiful the surrounding nature is. All of it is an irreplaceable gift from Mother Earth to us," she shared in her message. Take a moment to peer into the well where the dolls are gazing—you might discover something special too.

Altech
Altech

A simple and timeless chair designed by a master of Nordic modernism. This product is from "Artek," a company founded in 1935 by Alvar Aalto, a Finnish pioneer of Nordic modernism known for his warm architecture that skillfully incorporates natural materials. The name "Artek" represents the fusion of "art" and "technology." Aalto's furniture is characterized by his unique technique of bending wood. The legs of this chair are crafted using the "Aalto Leg," a one-of-a-kind method inspired by traditional Finnish techniques.

The painting gifted by the architect speaks to you. The artwork and writings by Mr. Yoshihiro Mashiko, the architect of "HOTELLI aalto" and an honorary professor at Tokyo University of the Arts, are displayed on the walls. These paintings, created for children, were donated along with a message to "HOTELLI aalto." Knowing this, you may discover new insights about "HOTELLI aalto," designed by Mr. Mashiko, that you hadn't noticed before seeing the artwork.

Mountain cherry wood table and easy chair

Mountain cherry wood table and easy chair

The mountain cherry wood table is a piece of sculptural furniture that soothes with the warmth of natural wood and gains character the more it is used. Positioned at the center of the lounge, this massive table was crafted from a rare and valuable mountain cherry tree. It was an uncertain endeavor, as its usability could only be determined after splitting the wood. Preserving its natural form as much as possible, you can touch and feel the long years it has lived through. The easy chair was designed by Hans J. Wegner, a Danish furniture designer who created over 500 types of chairs in his lifetime. Wegner significantly influenced 20th-century Scandinavian design, and his works are part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His iconic "The Chair," which brought his name to global recognition, was famously used during the televised debate between Kennedy and Nixon, cementing its place in history. The lounge table is paired with a vintage easy chair (GE-290), adding a touch of timeless elegance to the space.

Guest room

Nordic-style guest room that feels like living in nature

Each Room has a unique ambiance. What they share is the warmth of wood and the natural beauty of Urabandai spreading outside the windows. The space itself is a "shared blessing." "HOTELLI aalto," a 40-year-old mountain lodge repurposed, also captivates with the "skills" of the architects who designed it.

Cuisine
Tagokoro Cafeteria

Writing "heart" under "field" forms "thought" - "Tagokoro Restaurant" prepares each dish with "thoughtfulness." This "thoughtfulness" involves adhering to the teaching of "oneness of body and land" and the desire to "share blessings" from the bounties of this land through "local consumption and production."

Benten no Yu
Benten no Yu

Urabandai is one of Japan's premier highland resorts, yet its aspect as a hot spring area is surprisingly less known. There are two large baths with distinct atmospheres in the annex and main building. The Onsen is a "gift" from Mount Bandai, which is still active underground. "HOTELLI aalto" features an on-site hot spring source, with clear water that has a faint yellowish tint.
