~Enjoy a special holiday at one of Japan's largest log Hotels, surrounded by magnificent nature~

One of Japan’s largest log Hotels, nestled in the majestic nature of Hakkoda. Surrounded by the warmth of carefully selected timber—comforting even to the touch—and a refined, relaxing atmosphere, we promise you an exceptional stay. The breathtaking seasonal views from our large windows feel like a work of art framed before your eyes. Fresh spring greenery, crisp summer forests, vibrant autumn foliage, and a shimmering winter wonderland—Hakkoda’s ever-changing scenery will enrich your time here. A gentle natural-wood fragrance fills the Hotel, while our staff’s heartfelt hospitality and the chef’s exquisite cuisine create a warm and luxurious experience. Escape the bustle of the city and spend a special holiday with someone dear—one that will surely become an unforgettable memory.

  • Arriving at the Hotel and being greeted with “Welcome back” makes me feel relieved every time. This time, I stayed for two nights and enjoyed a relaxing soak at Sukayu Onsen (the sulfur is excellent). I was also able to use the Hotel’s Onsen without it being crowded, which helped soothe both body and mind. Hakkoda Hotel is famous for its French cuisine, but the Japanese meals also reflect the chef’s dedication. Each visit brings new discoveries for both the eyes and the palate, and I always look forward to it. This time, they also accommodated my request regarding portion size, so I could enjoy everything deliciously while savoring it with both eyes and taste buds. The drink explanations (wine, etc.) were also thorough, which I appreciated. That said, since the dining area isn’t very large, I personally hope things remain calm enough to relax as they are now. I was impressed by how hard the new staff members are working, and the long-time staff continue to provide a reassuring sense of comfort. I plan to visit again in late autumn, and I look forward to seeing you then as well.

  • I stayed in Aomori for 3 nights and 4 days, and used this Hotel on the second night. Dinner was Japanese, and breakfast offered a choice of Japanese or Western; I chose Japanese (my family chose Western). Both meals were of a quality that surpassed even a traditional fine-dining kaiseki course. The grilled “Kinkin” was exceptionally delicious. The morning croissant in the Western breakfast was so crispy it felt like a cookie. I highly recommend trying it.The service was also excellent and made for a very pleasant stay.It seems the admission fee voucher for Sukayu Onsen is available at this Hotel, so I regret going before check-in. Since it’s close by, I recommend checking in first.

One of Japan’s largest log-built structures, showcasing magnificent wooden architectural beauty

Our lodge is one of the largest and most magnificent log-built structures in Japan, captivating guests with its luxurious, powerful timber architecture. Designed by Mr. Hayakawa, it blends seamlessly into the national park landscape in harmony with nature. Inside, 60 cm square Douglas fir pillars from Oregon, USA—spaced every 5 meters—support the structure, while Canadian red cedar logs over 40 cm in diameter adorn the exterior walls. Built using a traditional joinery technique adapted from yotsuzashi construction, the exquisite wood framework adds depth and grandeur to the space, creating an overwhelming presence reminiscent of temple architecture.

A Collection of Works by Shiko Munakata, “Munakata of the World”

Shiko Munakata was one of Japan’s leading printmakers, born in Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture. Self-taught as an artist, he developed his own distinctive techniques and style—especially in printmaking—and came to be highly acclaimed both in Japan and abroad. His works are known for powerful lines, bold compositions, and unique use of color, and he is sometimes called the “Van Gogh of Japan.” Here you can view masterpieces by this extraordinary artist up close. Please enjoy the harmony between his dynamic brushwork and our log-built architecture. Our bar lounge also has a collection of his works, “The Complete Works of Shiko Munakata,” allowing you to follow the evolution of his art from early oil paintings to the woodblock prints that defined his career. Our Accommodation displays “Yamato-e” created by Shiko during his stay at Sukayu Onsen Ryokan, while Sukayu features many exhibits of his calligraphy.

Known as a “sacred hot spring above the clouds,” Sukayu Onsen sits at an elevation of about 900 meters. Combined with clean air low in UV rays and allergens and the effects of the highland climate, it is said that its benefits for all kinds of ailments appear after 10 days over three visits. The five springs are all acidic sulfur springs, recognized for their therapeutic properties as a “therapeutic Onsen” (Toji-yu). Among them, “Atsu-no-Yu,” located inside the Sennin-buro bath hall, is a rare type of Onsen in The whole country where the water wells up from underfoot, allowing you to enjoy constantly fresh hot spring water. Guests staying at our Accommodation can bathe free of charge, and even after regular day-use bathing hours end, bathing is available until 21:00.
