Introduction of the Accommodation

image d_001.JPG

Nissho Villa is one of the few large, purely traditional Japanese wooden two-story inns located in the heart of Kyoto. At the center of the property lies a luxurious, authentic Japanese garden, and the building, originally constructed in Tenmei 8 (1788), showcases the pinnacle of modern architecture while preserving the charm and tranquility of Kyoto. The land on which Nissho Villa stands was originally the residence of Shinbei Urai, a merchant of the Itowappu trade and a tea master, during the Kyōhō era (1716–1736). As was customary for tea masters of that time, Shinbei also practiced pottery. According to historical records, there was a small kiln on Shinbei's property, and remnants of it can still be found on the grounds of our villa. One notable artifact, the "Shigaraki Tabimakura Flower Vase" bearing the "Takenomi Seal" by Shinbei's pottery mentor, Chikuan Sasa, from the Momoyama period (1582–1592), was unearthed on our property and is now exhibited at the Kyoto National Museum. Throughout our villa, we have displayed various pottery pieces, and we hope that our guests can appreciate the beauty of "Kyo-yaki" ceramics during their stay.
