Shikanoyu Tsuchiya

I stayed here the night before a hike. I had made a Reservation with rice balls for breakfast, but at check-in they kindly changed it to an earlier Ryokan-style meal. It was relaxing and very nice. I was able to enjoy the free-flowing Onsen almost privately. Although the building is old, it was well cleaned throughout. I would love to stay again.

A relaxing 3-night, 4-day Onsen getaway for a couple. We came to escape the heat, but it was right in the middle of the rainy season, so the days were pleasantly cool. Kazawa Onsen is located in Tsumagoi, famous for its cabbage fields and conveniently close to Kita-Karuizawa and Kusatsu. It’s a rare hot spring with “black water” (though it’s actually clear) and reddish-brown sediment (so-called Yunohana). After one soak, your skin feels silky smooth! After two soaks, even smoother! Rich in iron—especially great for women. Your hands and feet stay warm for a long time, and it also seemed to help with lack of sleep (and stress). By the time we left, my skin looked like it might even be brighter. The meals included many small dishes featuring local vegetables and mountain plants; everything—from simmered dishes to dressed salads and grilled items—was delicious. The proprietress welcomed us kindly and warmly. We enjoyed blissful time simply lounging around all day and soaking in the Onsen.
