Obuse, the town of Hokusai and chestnuts, is known for its beautiful streetscape that feels almost like a theme park. We arrived a little early by car, so we visited Gansho-in Temple and Jokoji Temple before heading to Masuichi Kyakuden. The ceiling painting at Gansho-in—Katsushika Hokusai’s “Phoenix Glancing in All Directions”—was truly breathtaking. As soon as we pulled up in front of Masuichi Kyakuden, a staff member came right out and efficiently carried our luggage inside. The highly sought-after “Chestnut Dessert Suzaku,” which is notoriously difficult to secure, will be offered from 9/10 this year. Because guests staying at Masuichi Kyakuden receive priority guaranteed access, it becomes even harder to make an Accommodation Reservation for stays from 9/10 onward. Since our stay was before then, making a Reservation was easy. Stepping inside Masuichi Kyakuden, you’re immediately enveloped by the stately atmosphere of the kura storehouse building. Our Room was on the second floor; we chose the Relax Twin style. Despite being in a kura-style structure, it also has a terrace, with plenty of natural light and an open feel. There are also more traditional, calmer kura-style Rooms available; however, we were told they are designed with high ceilings to avoid any sense of confinement. Designed by architect John Morford, the Room is fully Western-style with extensive use of stainless steel—its glass-and-stainless bath is well worth seeing. Amenities are L’Occitane; the refrigerator includes complimentary drinks; plus coffee and tea—everything you’d expect from a high-end Ryokan-style stay is provided, making the Room very comfortable. For dinner, we walked about three minutes to Obusedo Honten (part of the same Masuichi group). Every dish showcased the head chef’s experience and refined sensibility. The soup course, simmered dishes, and grilled items had a Kyoto kaiseki influence—above all else, the dashi was exceptional. The sashimi was fresh and perfectly seasoned as well. Local ingredients were used throughout for very high satisfaction overall. One note: the first items served—lightly dressed Kurakake beans and Matsumae-zuke—are not part of the course menu itself (just so you know). They’re clearly intended as snacks with alcohol—especially sake brewed by Masuichi Ichimura Sake Brewery within the same group—and both paired beautifully with their sake: firm Kurakake beans soaked in elegant dashi alongside Matsumae-zuke packed with rich seafood umami made each sip even better than before. In autumn Obuse becomes all about chestnuts; while we couldn’t try “Chestnut Dessert Suzaku,” we did get to enjoy “Mont Blanc Suzaku,” a Western-inspired take on Suzaku. It’s available at their affiliated shop “Entotsu.” We nearly gave up due to long lines but learned that overnight guests can make Reservations—so we were able to enjoy it without waiting. If you stay at Masuichi Kyakuden, be sure to indulge in one of their “Suzaku”-style chestnut sweets if you can. Overall it was an outstanding stay—we thoroughly enjoyed Obuse from start to finish.

The location is very convenient from the station, and the front desk staff were courteous, making check-in and check-out smooth. After checkout, there are lockers by the entrance where you can store and retrieve your luggage without needing to speak with the front desk, which is especially stress-free when you’re in a hurry. The welcome sweets and coffee were also delicious.

I contacted the property to change my arrival time, and I was very grateful that the front desk waited for me even though it was 11:00 PM. The large public bath was available until 2:00 AM, and since it had just opened, everything was clean. Breakfast was also satisfying. The Room was just the right size—not too big and not too small. Also, it is an excellent location for those traveling by car, as it is only 2 minutes from the interchange.

I always stay at Naganohaku. The breakfast was as good as ever. The sake tasting in front of the front desk was nice with snacks, but it would have been better if I could have tried four varieties. I will stay again.

I was able to stay one night at a discounted rate with a Reservation made one month in advance. (I stayed on the first day of the Nagano Tomyo Festival. I thought it might be hard to book, but since I applied early, I was able to make a Reservation.) It has great access from Nagano Station, the room was clean, and I was very satisfied with the wide selection of amenities. I didn’t notice any noise from the city or inside the Hotel at all. The staff were always smiling and helpful, so even as a woman staying alone, I felt safe. I really appreciated the variety of tea bags and that there were two types of bath salts. Thank you very much for your hospitality. When staying in Nagano again, I would definitely like to use this Accommodation again.

I stayed here on a guys’ trip with my sons. Both the building and the room were clean and well maintained, and we had a very comfortable stay. The LOVOT in the first-floor lobby was adorable and added to the nice atmosphere. We really enjoyed both the sauna and the cold bath. Breakfast featured plenty of local ingredients, which made us feel like we were truly in Nagano. We were also happy with the great manga selection, and dinner at the in-house restaurant—especially the pizza—was satisfying. When I come to Nagano again, I’d like to stay here again!

We stayed for two nights as a base for sightseeing and were able to rest well thanks to the quiet atmosphere and comfortable beds. This time we focused on sightseeing and only had breakfast, but the morning buffet was delicious. The spacious, easy-to-use parking lot also left a great impression.

Conveniently located very close to Nagano Station. The mixed rice at breakfast was delicious—I had seconds. There is also an open-air bath, which was very relaxing. Automated check-in and check-out made everything quick and smooth. The staff were friendly and welcoming, making the trip very pleasant. I would like to stay again.

Having read the Reviews in advance, I was aware of what to expect, but my companion was very surprised by the contrast between the front desk atmosphere and the impression of the Room. The day-use bathing area feels lively like a busy public bathhouse, while the guest Rooms were calm and comfortable. Because we visited on a weekday, the large public bath was not crowded and very relaxing. The only thing that bothered me slightly was seeing someone brushing their teeth at the washing area. Even so, I was truly impressed by the abundant flow of free-flowing Onsen water straight from the source. When I visit around Nagano Station for work in the future, I would love to stop by again even just for a day-use bath. The Room was flawlessly comfortable, and the private indoor bath was very spacious. I was also amazed by how much hot water it had. Dinner was served in-room, so we could relax without worrying about others, and we thoroughly enjoyed the delicious dishes with thoughtful touches. The staff member who served us was friendly and made it a pleasant time. At breakfast, it was also nice to be able to choose between rice porridge cooked with Onsen water and regular steamed rice. Please note that there are no amenities provided in the large public bath area (including makeup remover), so bringing your own is recommended. The in-Room amenities are also provided for one use (one day) only, so if you plan to bathe multiple times, it may be reassuring to bring extras. Overall, it was a highly satisfying stay.

I stay here whenever I visit Nagano. It’s very convenient as it is directly connected to the station. After I requested a buckwheat husk pillow once, they have thoughtfully placed one in my Room ever since without me having to ask. They often have my Room ready and let me in without making me wait until check-in time, which is very helpful. Thank you as always.

This is a Hotel where you can stay comfortably and casually.

We stayed here as a couple on our trip. We were able to take our time sightseeing, enjoy local pubs, and relax at this clean Hotel. It’s a Hotel we’d like to stay at again if we have the chance to visit.

The Hotel had a wonderful atmosphere at the front desk counter—the face of the property. Of course, the guest rooms were spotless, and the breakfast staff were cheerful. The view was great as well—everything was excellent. A Hotel really comes down to its people. I fully support eco-friendly Hotels. That said, personally, I would prefer amenities like shampoo to be provided in bottles. (For sightseeing, Zenkoji Temple and Togakushi are both lovely, but Obuse—reachable on the Nagano Electric Railway from Shiyakusho-mae Station near the Hotel—was beautiful throughout the town, and I enjoyed exploring by bicycle from the station.) We stayed in a Room with a mini-kitchen on the 11th floor, and everything was clean and very nice. There were two of us, but it was spacious enough, and best of all, the toilet and bathroom were separate. We’ll be visiting Nagano Prefecture again next year, so we’d love to stay here again.

We were looking for an Accommodation to stay with our one-year-old, but every Hotel we checked had no Japanese-style Rooms available, so we gave up and booked a Western-style Room at another Hotel. Right up until the last minute, we kept searching on IKYU and found this Room with flooring, so we decided to stay here. The Hotel had the feel of a long-established Western-style Hotel, but the Room had been renovated, so it didn’t feel old. What surprised us most was how thoroughly everything was cleaned—even the corners of the Room were spotless. Even when our baby crawled around, there was no dust. We felt completely at ease. Thank you very much. Having a microwave and kitchen space was also very helpful. The bathroom had a separate washing area and was easy to use. Everyone—from the front desk staff to the cleaning staff—was very pleasant. Thanks to your thoughtful care in many ways, we were able to enjoy our stay with peace of mind. We’re glad we chose to stay here. When we stay in Nagano City again, we would love to stay here again. Thank you very much.

The bathroom and toilet entrances are slightly raised, which may be inconvenient for elderly guests. Breakfast offered a wide variety of food and drinks, and I was very satisfied. I would like to stay here again the next time I travel to Nagano.

I stayed for a few days on special business. The Facility is old, but it is kept clean. The cheerful voice of the male staff at the breakfast venue energized me as well. The free breakfast was satisfying, with Shinshu soba, inari sushi, a salad bar, and a drink bar! Having a large public bath was the best! Thank you very much for your kind hospitality.

Go down to the ground-floor level at Nagano Station, cross the crosswalk to the right, and you will find the entrance immediately. The escalator was out of service, so I took the stairs up to the front desk on the second floor. (Please note this if you have difficulty walking.) I stayed for two nights and was happy with the warm and courteous hospitality throughout. I also appreciated the welcome drink and happy-hour alcohol service. From the 10th floor, I could see mountains behind Nagano Station, which really made me feel like I was in Nagano. Was it only me who couldn’t connect to Wi-Fi in my Room? Even when it connected briefly, it disconnected right away. That was my only disappointment; otherwise, I had a comfortable stay overall. Thank you very much!

It’s more than a 5-minute walk from Nagano Station, but unless it’s raining, the distance isn’t a concern. The Facility feels a bit dated, but it has everything you need, and the Room and bathroom were spacious and comfortable. Breakfast isn’t available, but there’s a nearby café just a short walk away where you can get an inexpensive toast set, so it wasn’t an issue.
