I stayed here to visit Hakodate Racecourse. I stayed last year as well and it was so good that I came back again. Among the major Hotels in Yunokawa Onsen, this one seems to be the closest to the racecourse. It’s about a 15-minute walk, and there’s also a streetcar, so it’s convenient for getting into the city. There are also a convenience store, COOP supermarket, and a drugstore nearby. In any case, there are few Rooms, so it never feels crowded. The large public bath is also quiet. The property is connected to Takubokutei, so you can use Takubokutei’s large public bath and shop as well. (Guests staying at Takubokutei cannot use Kaikyo no Kaze.) The Room is simply spacious. Even the standard type feels very comfortable. This time I chose a Room with a private bath, and the bath in this Room was excellent—spacious with great water quality. Having two sinks was also convenient. Even the tissue box was full-size like at home. The only disappointing point was that both the Room window and even the bathroom window were dirty, so I couldn’t clearly enjoy the view through them. Since I was on a high floor, cleaning the windows may be difficult, but I had been looking forward to “a panoramic view of Tsugaru Strait,” so it fell slightly short of expectations. This time I booked a Plan with dinner and breakfast included, and both meals were truly excellent. There were plenty of Hokkaido ingredients with lots of variety on the menu, plus several kinds of desserts—I ate so much that I didn’t need lunch. Meal times were scheduled in advance as well, so there was no crowding. Next year I’d like to stay here with my daughter—the three of us together. Also starting next year my son is scheduled to be transferred to Sapporo, so I’d like to recommend it to him too.

The building is old and very small. Surrounded by large hotels, it sits tucked in between them, so I almost walked right past it. This was my first stay at Kamomekan, and there were three things I really liked. First of all: the hot spring. It’s a wonderful free-flowing natural hot spring. You can use it freely from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and again from 1:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. As soon as I arrived, I went straight in and was able to soak away the fatigue from driving. Although the facilities are old, the bath area was well cleaned and felt very fresh and pleasant. It’s not large enough to be called a big public bath, but more like a medium-sized one. There are six washing stations, though realistically it feels most comfortable with about 3–4 people at once. Since you leave your slippers outside the curtain marked “Women,” you can tell how many people are inside by counting the slippers—so if you adjust your timing, you can avoid crowds. I went in around 4:00 p.m. right after arriving and again around 7:00 a.m. the next morning; both times I had it all to myself, which made me extremely happy. (I recommend skipping the bath in the room—it’s small and it seemed like water could easily splash onto the toilet floor. Since there’s such a great hot spring on site, that’s definitely the better choice.) Second: the location. Hasegawa Store (HASEST), convenience stores, and Yunokawa Fishing Port are all within walking distance—about 5–6 minutes straight down the main road—and even someone with no sense of direction like me didn’t get lost. Since my stay was room-only (no meals), I had dinner as HASEST yakitori bento (grilled chicken skewer bento). With a freshly made bento in hand, I went straight to the fishing port and enjoyed an incredible luxury—snacking on yakitori while watching the sun set behind Mt. Hakodate. The next morning as well, I bought breakfast at a convenience store during my walk, stopped by the fishing port again, and ate while watching sunrise—such great travel memories. (If you want to eat at the hotel restaurant, please note that it is reservation-only; they apparently do not accept bookings made on or after the day before.) Third: value for money. Even during a three-day holiday weekend, I was able to stay for JPY 8,000 per night—and although I drove there by car, there was no parking fee charged. Excellent value. (Room rates vary depending on season/date conditions when booking; however compared with nearby large hotels this place seems much cheaper.) That’s all. Next time I come to Hakodate as well—if I can get a reservation—I’d love to stay here again.
