This is my regular Accommodation when I return home. I’m always satisfied with the warm hospitality from the staff. The Room is thoroughly cleaned, and the breakfast staff always greet guests with a bright, energetic voice. When they have time, they even take care of weeding and cleaning around the property—I truly appreciate their dedication. This Hotel offers heartfelt hospitality and clearly understands how to welcome guests while maintaining a comfortable sense of distance.

My first stay. The large public bath was spacious, and I enjoyed the Onsen at a leisurely pace. The guest Room had high ceilings and an open-air bath; there was a Japanese-style room next to the bed, and each room had a TV, so I could truly refresh. The meals were kaiseki cuisine—sashimi, tempura, grilled fish, a small hot pot, chilled chawanmushi, and more—everything was very delicious, and I also had two large draft beers.

The hospitality felt more like a luxury Ryokan than a temple lodging. Our Room was upgraded to a special suite, and we were able to relax in the spacious “Hojo” Room overlooking an expansive garden. The shojin-ryori cuisine was beautifully presented and delicious throughout. After dinner, we took a short walk (about 3 minutes) to Danjo Garan. With bonfires lit and the area illuminated, we caught a glimpse of Kobo Daishi’s mandala world through sights such as Konpon Daito, Saito Pagoda, and Kondo Hall. The next morning, we joined the morning service from 6:00 a.m., which felt truly solemn and moving. The Dharma talk by Archbishop Miyata explained Buddhism from a global perspective with humor, making it easy to understand. I strongly feel that Koyasan is best experienced with an overnight stay. My long-held wish to visit Mount Koya finally came true for the first time, and thanks to being able to stay at Ekoin, it became an even more memorable experience. Starting with Ajikan meditation, I was able to do everything I had hoped for—sutra copying, morning prayers, the Goma fire ritual, and shojin ryori—making these two days truly precious. Thank you very much.

This was my first shukubo stay, and I experienced it solo. It was a slightly pricey plan, but the room was spacious, clean, and comfortable with a private toilet. There was even a TV—it felt like a regular ryokan. The door only had an inside lock, but there was a safety deposit box, so I didn’t worry when taking a bath. The layout felt like a maze, and I got lost several times (with an awkward smile). I upgraded the shojin-ryori meal plan and ended up completely full—despite being vegetarian cuisine, I somehow gained weight. But it was delicious. At night, some women in the next room (probably around my age) were laughing and talking quite loudly for a long time, and everything carried through, but that’s to be expected at a shukubo. The hot spring bath was also very relaxing. My first time in Mt. Koya—I was surprised by how many international visitors there were.

I recommend staying multiple nights. Since it’s a historic building, I was a little nervous at first, but after a few nights I really came to appreciate its charm. The garden is beautifully maintained and the view is lovely. The bath, washroom, and toilets are all new and very clean. Each meal came with a full wooden rice tub of rice, and the wonderful aroma and delicious taste made me exclaim out loud. Every side dish was also delicious. Even the ganmodoki was so good it made me blurt out how tasty it was. I was able to stay solo at a reasonable price and truly relax. Thank you very much.

While searching for Hashimoto Station to visit Mount Koya the next day, I was able to make a reservation at a wonderful hostel. When I was unsure about dinner, they kindly recommended an excellent izakaya with great value and lovely owners. The next morning, despite an early de
