The private family bath was spacious and even had a waterfall feature, with the water at just the right temperature, so we could soak and relax. The atmosphere of the large public bath was also wonderful. The meals featured local ingredients, the portions were just right, and we were very satisfied! If you have mobility issues, going up and down to the first floor may be difficult, but it was a quiet place to spend time. We’d love to visit again after a hike in the mountains.

At IKYU, it was categorized as casual, but we enjoyed a luxurious Onsen experience that felt like staying at a private villa. The Room had a spacious washroom, and the toilet being separate was also convenient. The heater in the Room was turned on in advance, so we stayed warm without needing to use the air conditioner. Various thoughtful touches were noticeable throughout, and I heard that adjustments are made regularly. It had such a pleasant atmosphere that made us wish to stay longer. Here are some points of concern: It would be helpful if spare foot mats were provided for the private bath so they can be replaced after use. The abundance of wash towels was very convenient. A single fresh flower in the Room would add charm since there were flowers in the dining area. During meal service, providing more details about local ingredients or cooking methods would be appreciated by travelers—it may require extra effort from staff but makes for enjoyable conversations while savoring meals. Having a menu list would also enhance the dining experience further.

I was able to spend a truly luxurious time surrounded by peaceful, lush greenery. The hospitality was outstanding. The Room and the meals—everything exceeded my expectations. I’d love to visit again in a different season.

Everything about the Accommodation—the Room, the meals, and the staff—was excellent and very satisfying. In particular, I was soothed by the soft, gentle waters of Sujiyu Onsen. The bath in the Room was wonderful, and I was able to relax and take my time.

We stayed here on a trip with my parents-in-law. Our top priority was finding an Accommodation that could provide a low-sodium diet for my father-in-law, who became seriously ill last year. If possible, we also wanted to bring our dog along, since my parents-in-law adore him. Those two points are why we chose this Accommodation. From the parking guidance to our Room, we were warmly welcomed by staff with wonderful smiles. They also prepared chairs for my elderly father and even a chair for the in-room Onsen bath, so within 30 minutes of arriving at the Ryokan we already felt truly happy. What impressed us most was the meals. We were told they would “accommodate as much as possible,” and they really did—removing mentaiko, providing low-sodium soy sauce, and preparing dishes without salt or pepper. Thanks to all these adjustments, my father was able to finish almost everything. Since his illness, even eating out requires constant caution, so being able to enjoy a meal together at the Ryokan made us genuinely grateful. Some Reviews mentioned there were no dog amenities, but there were lint rollers and paw wipes available, so we had no issues. The usual overnight set you’d bring when leaving a dog at a pet hotel (pee pad tray, food bowl, water bowl) was enough. The in-room Onsen bath was very spacious, with perfect water temperature—I used it many times. All of the staff at this Accommodation were kind and pleasant throughout our stay; it was truly two days of happiness. We would love to visit again!

I stay here frequently. I always feel relaxed thanks to the hospitality, meals, Room, and Onsen. The meals are very delicious—so much so that I end up overeating. The Room is also great: it’s comfortable for working and comes with an Onsen, making it perfect for a refreshing break. I will definitely stay again.

Despite changing the number of guests just one day before, they kindly called back and responded promptly. The private bath and the meals were excellent; the hot pot broth was so delicious that we drank it all and ended up completely full. The handmade soba had a great bite, and the freshly cooked rice was glossy and so good that we had seconds even though we were already full. The bath water had natural mineral deposits, leaving our skin smooth and soothing both body and mind from everyday fatigue. Thank you very much.

Six of us (all men) stayed here. We were very satisfied with the Onsen. The staff were also very helpful and pleasant. When we made the Reservation, we worried there might not be enough food, but we were fully satisfied. However, there are no convenience stores nearby, so if you want to drink in your Room, it’s best to buy what you need on the way (there is a refrigerator). Also, since the only smoking area is in one corner by the main entrance, it would have been nice to have one near the emergency exits on each floor as well.

We stayed in a detached annex. The website said “indoor bath type,” and there were no photos, so we expected a regular bath—but it pleasantly exceeded our expectations. I really think you should post photos of that bath on the website! We originally planned to use the open-air bath, but ended up using the in-room bath the whole time (lol). Also, I believe it was fully booked, yet while we were in our Room we couldn’t hear any voices or noise from other guests at all. You can definitely feel its age, but as a Ryokan it had everything we were looking for. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious and very generous in portion size. In particular, I made a Reservation for the half steamed chicken at dinner and it was quite an experience (in a good way). From the website photos I (wrongly) imagined a bone-in thigh, but it truly was “half.” It was very tasty, but you’ll need to save room in your stomach (especially women). When we asked, they even prepared the leftover steamed chicken so we could eat it in our Room! All staff members were wonderful—everyone was pleasant and welcoming. This quiet mountain Ryokan fulfilled everything I wanted: simply enjoying the Onsen and great food. Thank you very much.

We stayed at the property after climbing Mount Kuju. It was close to the Maki-no-toge trailhead, and after having tea at Shetani, we headed to Hanashinobu. We arrived at 4 PM and received a detailed explanation of the stay from the proprietress before heading straight to the onsen. The quality of the water was good, and there were various onsen options to choose from, which was very pleasant. Dinner was at 6 PM, which was perfect timing. The dinner was luxurious and very delicious. The room was warm, and we slept comfortably. Breakfast had a wide variety of dishes, and we were very satisfied. We would like to visit again. The owner and the proprietress were kind, and it was a warm property.

The Accommodation buildings are scattered across a spacious property, offering a relaxing escape from the bustle of the city. But the greatest highlight here is the wonderful dinner. The menu is thoughtfully crafted, with many unique and unusual dishes. The chef’s dedication really shows in the food, and I was very satisfied. The Onsen is also excellent, with free-flowing natural hot spring water. I didn’t know there was such a great place in Kokonoe.

Bringing our two preschool grandchildren with us, choosing the detached Accommodation was the right decision. It was even the same Room my husband and I had stayed in before! It seemed to be their first time experiencing an open-air bath attached to the Room, and they were thrilled. Since it’s a standalone house, we could relax and enjoy ourselves without worrying about disturbing others even if they got a little noisy. Meals were served in a private dining room, and not only was the food excellent, but above all the service was outstanding. All of the staff were from overseas, but they welcomed us with wonderful smiles, making our meal truly pleasant.

I used it for a trip with him at the beginning of the year. It was a whole building rental, and there was a bath in the room, so we could relax as much as we wanted without worrying about the surroundings. Dinner was a special New Year's menu with fish and meat, and it was very satisfying. Above all, the rice cooked in a personal earthenware pot for breakfast was very delicious, and he was very pleased. Since it was New Year's, we were also given sake as a service on our way back. Its greatest value lies in its intentionally limited number of rooms. Far removed from the bustle of a large Ryokan, it offers complete privacy—paired with perfectly judged hospitality that is attentive without ever feeling intrusive. From the moment you arrive, you can feel everyday life quietly fade away. The open-air bath is simply unforgettable. In crisp, unobstructed air, soaking in superb free-flowing Onsen while watching the starry sky shift moment by moment becomes more than a bath—it’s an indulgent sense of oneness with nature. For an Accommodation with such a private atmosphere, the generous space throughout is exceptional and especially appealing to wellness-minded travelers. As I was visiting after business and didn’t want to inconvenience the owner couple, I booked a stay with breakfast only—but each dish at breakfast told its own story. Every bite was spot-on and far beyond expectations. I regretted not ordering dinner so much that I could only think afterward: “Why didn’t I?” I also learned that at nearby Komatsu Jigoku—reopened for sightseeing after restoration completed in summer 2025—you can make Onsen eggs yourself. They kindly sold me eggs upon request and graciously accommodated my last-minute favor. I visited in early summer, but reaching Kokonoe’s mountains when they are covered in snow will likely require some preparation. Even so, that challenge only adds to the thrill of heading into a hidden retreat. Nature, renowned hot springs, and outstanding cuisine—Yamatsubaki brings them together in near-perfect balance. It isn’t just somewhere to stay; it’s a destination in itself—a truly one-of-a-kind Accommodation worth traveling for.

I stayed with my parents upon their recommendation and was completely satisfied with everything. The delicious meals were more than enough, the building had a charming atmosphere, and the autumn leaves visible from the semi-open-air bath were breathtaking. It reminded me of my grandmother and brought a sense of warmth and relaxation. It was such a wonderful accommodation that I would love to stay again.

This is my third visit. The meals are delicious, and since there is a bath in the Room, you can enjoy it 24 hours a day. The resident dog, Luna, is also very calm and adorable! It’s a Ryokan I truly love—quiet, relaxing, and an extraordinary space where you can unwind. There’s also a dog run where they can run around freely, so the dogs are thrilled! Next time, we’re talking about coming back for a Multiple Night Stay with my husband.

Easily accessible from Makinoto Pass, this is a great hotel with both meals and an onsen. Dinner offers a wide variety of dishes that will leave you full. Breakfast is also delicious. The onsen includes family baths with open-air options as well as indoor baths, providing a wonderful experience. While the building and rooms may show some age, it is still a highly recommended accommodation.

Dinner offered a wide variety of dishes, all very delicious, and we were completely satisfied. I only wished the tempura had been served freshly made, but it was still tasty and satisfying. Breakfast was a healthy Japanese-style meal with many small side dishes that went perfectly with rice, and I was happy to be able to have three extra bowls of rice. The private bath was a bit hot, but we could adjust the temperature. The large public bath was also clean, and we were able to relax in the Onsen. The waterfall shower is right in front of you, and they even provide coins for it—excellent. The balance of food, price, and overall satisfaction was very good. We also received discounted ski tickets, which made our ski experience great value as well. They are flexible with breakfast times for hikers and can accommodate bento lunches too, which I found very convenient. I would like to stay again. Thank you very much.
