I visited Hiiragiya again. I had made a Reservation for a Room with a bath and toilet, but I was first shown to a Room without them. It was still very comfortable, but when I asked to Check Reservation, I was told there had been a mistake, and you kindly arranged for me to stay in the Room associated with author Yasunari Kawabata. Thank you for your thoughtful care. Once again, I enjoyed Kyoto’s summer flavors—chilled edamame soup topped with sea urchin, pike conger sashimi, grilled tilefish with crispy scales, jellied soft-shelled turtle broth, Kamo eggplant with sesame sauce, and more—then fully enjoyed Yoiyama and fell asleep thinking of Mr. Kawabata before continuing on to the Gion Festival. Kyoto is changing little by little, but this is the beauty of Japan—and the spirit of Japanese hospitality—that I hope will be passed on to future generations.

Its kaleidoscopic beauty resonates deeply in the heart. Exquisitely prepared with sincere care, the cuisine is truly delicious. A beautiful garden that reflects the seasons—so captivating you could gaze at it forever. Elegant summer décor that lets you fully experience Kyoto’s traditional culture. Hanging scrolls, ikebana, and a beautifully arranged Room down to every detail. The head chef, attendants, the young proprietress, and the proprietress herself offer warm, attentive hospitality with genuine grace. Thinking that all of this beauty is an expression of love for each guest fills me with freshness and gratitude. At Kikkawa, you can feel the refined spirit of Kyoto—an appreciation for making everyday life beautiful and joyful. It began as an Accommodation I hoped to stay at at least once in my life; before I knew it, this was my 11th visit. A superb culinary Ryokan I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who truly loves Kyoto.

Despite being located in a lively part of town, the property felt like a different world—wrapped in serene tranquility. The cool breeze drifting through the reed doors and the pleasantly textured ajiro weaving, which I experienced for the first time, deeply moved me as part of Japan’s beautiful “summer setting.” Listening to the gentle sound of the shishi-odoshi echoing through the impeccably kept garden and spending time in the dignified tea room were truly luxurious moments that soothed my soul. The food and drinks were also exceptional—everything felt wonderfully satisfying to all five senses. Thank you sincerely for your thoughtful touches throughout. It became a wonderful summer memory, and my first visit back to Kyoto in a while was made even more special.

Whenever I stay in Kyoto, I always choose the Okura. It isn’t a new Hotel, but it is clean and has a calm, refined elegance. The staff—including trainees and what may be new employees—are hardworking, courteous, and pleasant. The experienced team members who quietly and reliably support those who are still learning are also wonderful. They are polite and friendly while maintaining an appropriate sense of distance, which makes the stay truly comfortable and relaxing. Every Room is easy to spend time in. I always book a Plan with breakfast only, so I can only comment on breakfast—but it is simply excellent. I choose the Japanese set each time, and it feels like “such a luxury in the morning.” Cold items are served cold, hot items are served hot, and the dashi is delicious. I genuinely look forward to this breakfast every visit. I’m already looking forward to coming back again.

I’ve been using this place for nearly 10 years, and no matter when I visit, the staff are always pleasant and welcoming. While service often declines over time, it’s rare to find a Facility that maintains such high quality without letting standards slip. I truly respect the daily efforts of the staff.

I often stay here when visiting Kyoto for personal trips. I like the quiet setting away from the downtown area. Shin-Sawaragi Street runs north–south toward the Imperial Palace. Some old wooden houses still remain, and over the past few years I’ve been coming here, more small places such as stand bars have opened along the street and side lanes. With an 11:00 check-out, and since it was a hot season, I was able to relax in my Room. I think I’ll stay here again next time.

This was my second stay. It was a Multiple Night Stay, and I really appreciated that complimentary water was included along with the replacement towels. Many places don’t offer that these days. The building was clean and comfortable to stay in. However, the hallway felt a bit too dark.

With Sanjo Station nearby, the location offers excellent access to sightseeing spots, and strolling along the Takase River and the Kamo River just steps away is very pleasant. The breakfast selection was extensive with both Japanese and Western options, and everything was delicious. This is a Hotel I would definitely like to stay at again.

I stayed for four days starting July 13. -Front Desk Staff- First of all, my sincere thanks to everyone. Due to personal circumstances, I consulted in advance about arriving earlier than planned. You kindly offered thoughtful suggestions, and at check-in the information had been accurately shared and handled perfectly. You also saw me off pleasantly at check-out. -Location / Surroundings- An excellent location in the heart of the city—Teramachi-dori, Shinkyogoku Shopping Street, Rokkaku-dori, and Sanjo-dori. Very convenient for dining and all kinds of shopping. -Hotel- Although it is a very busy area with many visitors (including international travelers), once you step into the Hotel everything changes—there is a quiet, relaxing atmosphere. The toilet and bath are completely separate. The bath is spacious and comfortable. The room is fully equipped with everything needed, including amenities. *Some amenities are available at the front desk In the North Building, the convenience store on the 1st floor is directly connected to the elevator. You can access it using your room key. -Sightseeing / Shopping- Shijo-Kawaramachi is about a 15-minute walk away. Thanks to the great location, various public transportation options are also close by for sightseeing and shopping. On the last day I checked out around 8:00 a.m. I headed to Kyoto Station from the Kawaramachi-dori bus stop about a 5-minute walk away; there were fewer passengers than expected, and I arrived in about 15 minutes. -Finally- I was disappointed that I couldn’t try your well-reviewed breakfast because I don’t eat much. It was during the Gion Festival (Yoiyama) period before the main parade—hot every day… no, very hot! (lol) But staying at such a wonderful Hotel made my time in Kyoto truly excellent. I look forward to visiting again next time. Thank you very much.

A sudden business trip to Kyoto came up that day, so I quickly made a Reservation at a Hotel near my destination. Since it was a last-minute Reservation, I hadn’t checked the details in advance, but it was a wonderful Hotel with thoughtfully designed interiors and excellent meals. Even though I stayed in a corner twin room with breakfast included, the last-minute discount made it an incredible value, and I had a very comfortable stay. The staff were also very kind and attentive, creating a welcoming atmosphere that allowed me to relax and enjoy my time. I would definitely like to stay again.

It was my first stay in a while. Aside from handling check-in and check-out yourself and picking up only the amenities you need at the front desk, everything was unchanged, and I had a comfortable stay. The Room was set to a pleasant temperature when I arrived, which made me forget Kyoto’s heat. This time, my purpose was to visit the Gojo Wakamiya Pottery Festival. It took less than five minutes on foot from the Hotel to Keihan Sanjo Station, so I could go by train and take my time looking around at the venue. It is also close to Pontocho and Kiyamachi, so finding places to eat was never a problem. Breakfast is buffet-style, and in addition to Western options, there were obanzai dishes, pork shabu-shabu, spice curry, and other satisfying choices. Despite being in such a convenient location, it’s also quiet and relaxing, so I would like to stay here again.

I always stay here when visiting Kyoto. The staff are always quick and smooth in their service. This time, they gave me a Room with a view from the window, which made it bright and I was very happy!

I celebrated the New Year here after a long time. This was my third stay. As always, the room and bath were truly comfortable, and I enjoyed the delicious drinks and alcohol in the lounge. With fewer rooms, it’s quiet and perfect for a relaxing stay. Being part of the Tokyu Stay group, it naturally has a washing machine and microwave, but this accommodation even has a freezer, which is a great bonus! Highly recommended.

Located in an excellent spot at Kawaramachi Takoyakushi, it is an ideal base for sightseeing in Kyoto. The Room is spacious, and the layout with a vanity sink in the center is very convenient. With a sliding door separating the bedroom and utility area, we were able to sleep very quietly.

Everything was wonderful. I checked in feeling completely exhausted that day, but the staff kindly offered to show me where the restaurant was if I didn’t mind, and since they could seat me right away, I ended up having dinner there. As I was dining alone, I asked the staff about portion sizes while ordering, and it turned into a truly delicious and happy meal. The Room was just the right size, so I could relax and recover. The next morning I took it easy as well. I got some cake and bread to take out and went to a friend’s Hotel where they were staying to eat them, and they were so good that I regretted not having breakfast here. I’m sure I’ll stay here again next time!

Overall, it is a good Hotel with a satisfying stay, but the Room temperature stayed too high and could not be adjusted, so improvements are needed.

I’ve tried several nearby Business Hotels, but this Hotel offers the best value for the price, and it has recently become my regular choice. As others have mentioned, all the staff are pleasant and welcoming. Soundproofing is also decent. Personally, I like that there is a water dispenser on each floor (instead of complimentary bottled water), disposable slippers are provided, the shower water pressure is strong, and the roller shade plus curtains can completely block outside light (since I tend to wake up late). Also, while many Business Hotels have a 10:00 check-out time, this one is 11:00. I’d like to thank the staff for supporting such a comfortable stay.

During the autumn foliage season, I hurriedly searched for accommodation with a large public bath. Unexpectedly, I found one that met my requirements and was very pleased. I am satisfied with my stay. I used the large public bath once at night and three times in the morning. Since my second son attends Kyoto University, we visited him from Tokyo during his school festival. As his apartment only has a unit bath, we chose this accommodation so he could enjoy a spacious bath for a change. He was very satisfied with both the bath and breakfast, which made me happy as a parent.

On the morning of the 24th, I searched for and booked a Hotel with a large public bath nearby so I could watch the Gion Festival yamahoko “tsujimawashi” at Kawaramachi Oike. It was absolutely the right choice! From the subtly Kyoto-style entrance, everything felt welcoming—especially the front desk staff, whose excellent service instantly eased my fatigue from traveling in extreme heat. I was satisfied as soon as I entered the Room. It’s a take-off-your-shoes style, and the clean Room along with its layout and furnishings made it feel like coming home. Having all water facilities grouped together right by the entrance is very convenient. Since there is a large public bath, the shower booth in the Room was more than enough. While many Hotels these days don’t provide sofas or tables, I really appreciated having a long sofa you can lie down on, an armchair-style single sofa, and a table that’s plenty for two people. There are many great restaurants nearby, so it was nice to have a setup that makes takeout easy to enjoy in the Room. The lighting controls were easy to understand, with thoughtful touches like an individual bedside light and options for indirect lighting throughout the Room. The bed was very comfortable—even with sensitive skin and being sensitive to smells, I slept soundly. The linens—especially the pajamas—were high quality and perfectly laundered; cleaning standards were excellent overall, including towels for the large public bath. Water came in stylish Ito En bottle-type containers that were replenished again on the second day and convenient to carry around. Tea, coffee, and black tea were also restocked, and I was happy they even provided wine glasses. At the entrance to/fromthe large public bath area there were two types of vinegar drinks that helped me stay balanced during summer heat. As for views: you can see mountains inthe distance,but right next door is an apartment balcony,and below is temple cemetery grounds,s oI keptthe blinds downand used indirect lighting.(I usedto livein Teramachi,s o cemeteries don’t bother me.)Since windows are frosted glassin springand autumn too,I think it won’t be an issue unless you wantto open them fully.The hospitality at this Hotel more than made upfor it.I didn’t add breakfast,but usedthe attached grillfor lunchand cocktail time,and enjoyed both.I’d love to stay at this Accommodation again.

The courteous service left the most lasting impression. In addition to the excellent location, the facility was well-maintained, clean, and comfortable. The amenity bar offered a wide variety of items, including cooling foot sheets and face packs, which were much appreciated. Complimentary coffee was available on the front desk floor. With traditional Japanese elements like tatami mats and shoji screens as part of the interior design, many guests were foreigners (mainly Westerners). During my stay, I heard more English than Japanese, which added a travel-like atmosphere even though I stayed for practical purposes. It was a hotel I would love to use again. Thank you very much!
