This is a perfect Accommodation no matter when you visit. It was Kyoto in extreme heat, but thanks to your thoughtful care in many ways, we had a wonderful time. The pike conger is a must in this season; it is an additional-order dish, but highly recommended. We are planning to visit again in autumn.

A beautiful garden that reflects the seasons—so captivating you could gaze at it forever. Elegant summer décor that lets you fully experience Kyoto’s traditional culture. Hanging scrolls, ikebana, and a beautifully arranged Room down to every detail. The head chef, attendants, the young proprietress, and the proprietress herself offer warm, attentive hospitality with genuine grace. Thinking that all of this beauty is an expression of love for each guest fills me with freshness and gratitude. At Kikkawa, you can feel the refined spirit of Kyoto—an appreciation for making everyday life beautiful and joyful. It began as an Accommodation I hoped to stay at at least once in my life; before I knew it, this was my 11th visit. A superb culinary Ryokan I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who truly loves Kyoto.

I stayed for two days, and I was truly impressed by the staff’s kind and attentive service. I have stayed at many Hotels across Japan, but I was once again struck by the meticulous hospitality at Hotel Okura Kyoto. Throughout my stay, their genuine desire to help guests feel as comfortable as possible came through naturally in many situations. During my stay, I dined at the French restaurant on the 17th floor and also used room service; both the food quality and service were impeccable. More than just its Facilities or location, I feel that the staff’s hospitality itself is one of this Hotel’s greatest attractions. It was a Hotel where I would definitely like to stay again.

My mother and I stayed here together. It was our first visit in over a decade, since we came as a family of three with my late father. We were able to enjoy the delicious meals that impressed us so much back then, and simply soaking in the bath and relaxing brought such a wonderful sense of happiness. I also found it lovely to see the proprietress and everyone else working so briskly and efficiently. I shared how delighted my father had been at the time, and it became a meaningful holiday during Higan. Thank you very much.

It’s very quiet—around the lobby, in the restaurant, and in the garden as well. It’s a space where you won’t be bothered by people or noise; that’s what makes this small property special, true to its name as an annex. We chose the smallest Room type, and it was more compact than we expected (in a good way). If you plan to spend a lot of time in your Room, a larger one facing the garden would be better. Breakfast is Nouvelle Époque despite (or perhaps because of) the intimate size. It feels more relaxed yet elegant than Toranomon. There are also Kyoto touches, and they even offer French toast—so we could enjoy that Okura feel too. Please let us stay again when we’re looking for a slow trip without trying to do too much!

We stayed for two nights in late August on a family trip. On the first night, I became unwell (likely heat exhaustion due to Kyoto’s climate and lack of sleep), and you kindly adjusted how dinner was served. You also prepared an ice pack and cold water, and all the staff offered warm words afterward as well—I truly caused you a lot of trouble. The next day we returned to the Accommodation early after sightseeing, but housekeeping was completed quickly and the Room was restored to a comfortable state. Our child had brought a favorite stuffed toy, and seeing it seated on the sofa warmed our hearts. I was also impressed that all staff had shared information such as my avoiding caffeine and our child’s preferences, and handled everything so naturally with thoughtful care. The timing of your check-ins and sense of distance were just right, and we experienced truly wonderful hospitality. We used the Room as a family of three (our child is in 6th grade), and it felt neither too large nor too small. Having a bath in the Room was especially nice because we could use it whenever we wanted. The water temperature was set to 41°C, which feels hot in summer, but we could adjust it by adding water. The changing area had floor heating, which helped prevent us from getting too chilled after bathing. Towels and water were replenished as well, so even if we sweated after bathing, it was great to be able to use clean towels and clothes. Also, there was a lovely fragrance the moment we entered the Room, with incense throughout the building—these scent touches made everything feel special and out of the ordinary. Every meal was truly delicious. Our child has many dislikes when it comes to seafood, but you accommodated this thoughtfully; plus, both days’ menus were different so we could enjoy variety. In particular, the charcoal-grilled style dishes along with Anto-jiru soup, takikomi gohan (seasoned rice), and Wakan 18 tea were excellent—our child loved them too. Breakfast also came with many rice accompaniments that were all delicious. The soups and dashi-based dishes especially felt very “Kyoto,” which we appreciated. Finally, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who took care of us during our stay. We made wonderful memories in Kyoto thanks to you. This is an Accommodation we would love to visit again as a family.

We had a comfortable stay. There were fewer tourists than expected, so it was quiet and relaxing. The parking area was spacious and easy to use. Thank you very much.

This was my first stay, and I was very satisfied with this friendly Hotel. It is a wonderful Hotel where I would definitely like to stay again next time. I was happy with everything—service, the Room, the view, the atmosphere, and access—but above all, the breakfast was delicious across the board and left me completely full from the morning. They also helped arrange a surprise for my partner’s birthday, which truly moved us. We look forward to staying again next time.

I stayed here for one night on a trip to Kyoto. I often stay in Kyoto and Nara, and this place has the unique comfort of a compact hotel. It feels very cozy, the Facilities are well equipped, and overall satisfaction is high. Although the hours are limited, it’s wonderful that there are complimentary drinks. Having local Kyoto sake is a service that makes travelers very happy. I was delighted to find the same sake I had at Kyoto Station on my way back. It might be nice if it were available for purchase as well. The front desk staff were kind—I enjoyed talking about sake with them—and they replenished breakfast at just the right times, so I had a very comfortable stay. Kyoto summers are hot, so I’d like to visit again after peak season. Thank you very much.

This was the best value for money among all the hotels I’ve booked through Ikkyu. It may have been because it was late August, but I was very happy to stay in a large twin room at a four-star level for this price. The front desk staff were also excellent. I would appreciate a bit more variety at the breakfast buffet. I was impressed by how new, clean, and spacious the in-room bathroom was. I’d definitely like to stay again when rates are reasonable. The facilities are new, modern, and stylish, which made me feel great and excited throughout my stay. It was disappointing that the lobby air conditioning was so cold that I couldn’t relax there.

The lobby was very comfortable and welcoming, making for an elegant stay. It was great that drinks on the first floor were available for takeout. The breakfast buffet was excellent. The room was spacious, and the bathroom was also large and spotless. I liked that the hotel is in a very historic area, but I didn’t personally enjoy how busy and cluttered the surroundings felt. I’d like to stay again when rates are lower. The staff were also very friendly and attentive.

I stayed in a smoking Deluxe Single Room. The Room was thoroughly cleaned down to every detail, and I had a very comfortable stay. I accidentally left something behind, but they kindly assisted me over the phone, and this is a wonderful Hotel with a high level of satisfaction in every aspect. Whenever I visit Kyoto, I will definitely stay here again.

The location is excellent. Strolling around Kiyamachi and Kawaramachi Street was fun, and the Kamo River at dusk was breathtaking. The Hotel feels very clean and the Room was comfortable, but the standout feature here is definitely the large public bath—it was fantastic. However, since we were on the second floor, we could hear some street noise in the early morning.

My spouse and I, an older couple, stayed for one night. It was quiet thanks to the location just off a small side street, the front desk staff were kind and helpful, and the Room was very clean. We parked our car at the coin-operated parking lot next door. We enjoyed a morning walk in the Kyoto Imperial Palace Park. It seems you can also have breakfast at a shop inside the park from 8:00 a.m. Some people may feel that the Hotel is a bit far from the station or that there isn’t a convenience store nearby, but for us—living somewhere much less convenient—it didn’t bother us at all (laughs). Everything was so great that we made another Reservation for a few months from now. That’s about it.

Nanzenji Sando Kikusui is a special place filled with everything we love, and staying here becomes a happy time to share it all with family. A beautiful Kyoto garden in fresh spring green, exquisite cuisine and wine, welcome Champagne, luxurious Rooms, and the staff’s hospitality—plus the one-of-a-kind location on Nanzenji Sando. Few Accommodations offer all of this. This time, we woke up early to join the dawn zazen session at Nanzen-ji Temple, which became an unforgettable experience. It is worth traveling here even if it means taking a flight just to visit.

Everything was wonderful. I checked in feeling completely exhausted that day, but the staff kindly offered to show me where the restaurant was if I didn’t mind, and since they could seat me right away, I ended up having dinner there. As I was dining alone, I asked the staff about portion sizes while ordering, and it turned into a truly delicious and happy meal. The Room was just the right size, so I could relax and recover. The next morning I took it easy as well. I got some cake and bread to take out and went to a friend’s Hotel where they were staying to eat them, and they were so good that I regretted not having breakfast here. I’m sure I’ll stay here again next time!

We stayed at the Accommodation on the last day of our trip to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. Arriving with excitement after being picked up in a luxury car, we were warmly welcomed by the smiling staff. When we entered our Room, we were delighted by the beautiful interior, a teepee and treats for our dog, and thoughtful hospitality such as chilled champagne and wonderful sweets—our dog was just as excited as we were. They also kindly accommodated our request to take a pre-dinner stroll together with our dog, which became a truly memorable experience. Dinner at the restaurant was outstanding, of course, but we were especially touched by an unexpected surprise after the meal. It became a very happy anniversary. Thank you for your heartfelt hospitality. It was a wonderful Hotel where each member of the staff worked with energy and pride.

Although I had long heard great reviews, I had never had the chance to stay here, so I finally booked a stay. Right after check-in, the staff welcomed me in a very friendly manner; it felt slightly surprising at first, but the lovely and delicious tea sweets made me feel it was a wonderful atmosphere. The Room was very compact and well organized, and I believe everything I needed was provided. Because the bathtub had been filled before check-in, I planned to bathe before dinner; however, to be honest, the water was so hot that I couldn’t get in. During the Room explanation, they did mention that it had been made hot in advance, but it still felt too hot. For better or worse, the bathtub is very large. That is quite rare for a historic Accommodation located in town, and it was pleasantly impressive—though I also realized that cooling it down takes time. As for dinner, before it began they showed me around the kitchen and ingredients area, which was an experience that really sparked my curiosity. The paired wines matched the dishes extremely well, and throughout the course—featuring rare and premium ingredients—I was satisfied overall; everything tasted excellent. For breakfast, since plenty of rice was prepared for us, I felt it would be even better with one or two more small side dishes (obanzai). In terms of other services as well, their attentive hospitality stood out; by checkout time, I already felt like returning again soon. Overall—and this may be something you only understand once you’ve stayed—I felt truly at-home hospitality here, and I think this is an Accommodation worth staying at again in a different season.

If you're visiting Kyoto and prefer staying at a Ryokan instead of a Hotel, you might want to consider an even more luxurious experience at this Accommodation. Upon arrival, you'll be awed by the grand gate of Kinkakuji Temple. Walking through the wooden door and along the gravel path in the front garden feels like stepping into another world, far removed from everyday life. In addition to clean, modern Japanese-style rooms with new facilities akin to those of a high-end Ryokan, you can enjoy exclusive access to a beautiful garden surrounded by nature. Although it's called "Shukubo," it is open to everyone and allows for casual participation in comfortable attire. The resident monk and his wife are incredibly friendly as well. This Accommodation offers an affordable yet luxurious experience comparable to that of high-end Ryokans. Memorable activities include making bracelets with natural stones, enjoying Shojin Ryori (traditional Buddhist vegetarian breakfast), and participating in morning prayers—all adding up to an unforgettable stay.
