Although it is located along a main road, once you step inside, it feels like another world. You are enveloped in greenery and tranquility that still preserve the atmosphere of its founding 160 years ago. With a spacious Japanese garden and wooded grounds, I was genuinely surprised that such a nature-rich space remains in such a convenient location from central Fukuoka City. The large public bath is spacious, with free-flowing water from the source continuously overflowing. Freshly drawn spring water carries a pleasant sulfur aroma. Through the wide windows, you can enjoy forest bathing. There is no open-air bath, but it still felt wonderfully open and relaxing. The meals were truly satisfying: refined dishes that are gentle on both body and mind, made with locally sourced seasonal ingredients from across Kyushu. The portions were just right. The tableware was also exceptional—you could feel how carefully high-quality pieces have been cherished and used over many years. We stayed in Heiantei, and the Room features an interior corridor layout that maintains privacy between each space (two Japanese-style rooms and one salon), making it comfortable even for multiple families traveling together. We were only two people, but it was more than spacious enough for us. The staff’s division of roles was thorough; each person clearly carried themselves as a professional in their position, and you could sense their pride in working at this renowned Ryokan. The service was flawless. Maintaining this level of quality must be incredibly demanding, but I sincerely hope they will continue to protect this precious historic Onsen Accommodation and pass it on to the future generations to come. It’s also extremely close—just 15 minutes by train from central Fukuoka City—so convenience is outstanding as well. Having stayed at countless Ryokan and Hotels, I can recommend this place with complete confidence.

This is what a great Accommodation should be. It met my expectations—and exceeded them. From the complimentary herb water made with herbs from the garden to the various cordial syrups and even a sake bath, every detail was thoughtfully considered. The olive kaiseki dinner left a strong impression of Shodoshima. I truly hope to return.

I was very satisfied. I wanted to write about everything I loved, but it would be too long. From the warm welcome when we arrived by car to the send-off when they helped load our luggage at departure, everything was perfect. The lobby, Room, lounge, and baths were all spotless.

The Room's facilities were clean and user-friendly, and having both a bathtub and washing area was the best part. The hairdryer was Dyson, the showerhead was Refa, and even the air purifier in the room was Dyson—everything felt luxurious. I would love to stay here again!

The Room was spacious and comfortable; after enjoying the bath, I relaxed in the massage chair provided in the Room. From the open-air bath in the large public bath area, I enjoyed a breathtaking view of cherry blossoms in full bloom—a perfect setting for a flower-viewing bath.

On my first trip to Kusatsu Onsen, I stayed for two nights in the private open-air bath guest room “TAKASAGO.” Guest Room (TAKASAGO) The layout is wonderfully spacious, with the bedroom and tatami-style living area separated, creating a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. Personally, I felt the room was a little dim due to limited natural light depending on its orientation, and I would have loved a larger sofa where you can really sink in rather than a low table—but overall it was an expansive, truly luxurious space. The tatami room with the low table faces a private garden and had a lovely sense of traditional charm. The maisonette-type rooms looked brighter and seemed to have more comfortable sofas as well, so I’d like to try one next time. Onsen Two different hot spring sources—Jizo Gensen and Bandai Kosen Gensen—are supplied here, making for an indulgent bathing experience. In addition to enjoying high-quality spring water anytime in the in-room open-air bath, the three private reservable baths each had their own distinct character and conveyed refined Japanese aesthetics. I thoroughly enjoyed soaking in Onsen throughout my stay. In particular, I loved “AWASE,” where three tubs are lined up from low to high temperature so you can experience a traditional bathing method—I went back again and again. Breakfast As dinner service was suspended during my stay, breakfast was the only meal offered—but its quality was outstanding, easily on par with dinner. I often stay at cuisine-focused Ryokan, and this was among the best I’ve experienced: creative composition of dishes, cooking that brought out the best of each ingredient, and thoughtful selection of tableware that elevated every course. Hospitality & Service The staff’s attentiveness and perfectly balanced approach—present when needed but never intrusive—left a strong impression and made my stay very comfortable. While there are a couple of minor preferences regarding the guest room setup, overall I was extremely satisfied with every aspect: Onsen, food quality (breakfast), and hospitality. I would absolutely love to return when visiting Kusatsu again.

I decided to write a Review for the first time in almost a year. Everything was flawless, and it was an extremely comfortable stay. The handrails for the open-air bath in the Room were thoughtfully placed with careful attention to movement flow, so even with my mobility issues I was able to bathe safely without feeling anxious. In addition, the handrails were made of wood rather than cold metal, and I truly appreciated the consideration shown throughout for guests. Thank you very much for such a blissful time.

After finally arriving through heavy rain on this trip, we were able to relax and enjoy our stay. The meals were served in a calm lounge, and we could really feel the care put into each dish. The Onsen was wonderful, but unfortunately, due to torrential rain severe enough to trigger warnings, the water temperature dropped on the morning of the second day. We were especially disappointed that we couldn’t use the bath in our Room. With expressways closed, sightseeing wasn’t possible at all, so we’d like to come back next time for a retry. The Accommodation is a pleasant, clean Hotel, and all of the staff were very kind.

First of all, the Hotel staff were absolutely outstanding! At mealtimes, we could dine while listening to the hostess sing, and her calm, soothing voice was truly relaxing. The food was also delicious—local specialties were incorporated beautifully, and we enjoyed every course without ever getting tired of it. And the open-air bath with a sky-high view was incredible!
