    The view is amazing, but is it sewage? The smell is very strong.

    The corner Room on the 9th floor had an amazing view with a clear look out over the canal and the sea. However, there was a strong odor (likely sewage) coming from the hallway into the Room’s washbasin area and toilet, which was very unpleasant. If this is fixed, I’m sure guest satisfaction will improve.

    Highly recommended if you’re willing to compromise on the location, price, and Facility.

    I chose this Accommodation because it offers views of the Otaru Canal from the guest rooms, has an Onsen Facility, and serves a breakfast buffet featuring menus made with local ingredients. Perhaps because I stayed slightly outside the peak season, I was able to book within my budget and had a wonderful time. However, as other Reviews mention, I also noticed that some in-room Facilities are old (the toilet seat was damaged), cleaning was not thorough (a human hair on the bathroom wall), and both the large public bath and the breakfast venue can get crowded—so I would not recommend it to anyone who cannot accept these points. Also, perhaps because many guests are unfamiliar with Onsen/public bath etiquette, I saw some situations that felt uncomfortable even as a Japanese guest, such as people entering while their hair was left down and large debris floating in the bath. Since it really depends on who happens to be staying on the same day, I recommend booking only if you are comfortable with that as well.

    Night views of the Otaru Canal right in front of you

    Facing the Otaru Canal, we enjoyed the canal’s night view from the Hotel window. The Room also had a classic, relaxing atmosphere, which was great. The air conditioning was too strong and it was cold, but the staff promptly brought a blanket to our Room. Thank you.

    First Stay in Otaru

    This was my first time sightseeing in Otaru. We stayed at this Hotel right in front of the Otaru Canal. It was a one-night stay for our family of three, and we ate out, so we only needed a place to sleep. The Room felt a bit small, but since we were just sleeping there, it was more than enough and we were satisfied. Next time, I’d like to try the Hotel breakfast. There are many coin-operated parking lots very close to the Hotel, and the rates were much cheaper than in Tokyo. We parked overnight and left the car until checkout while sightseeing around Otaru Station, and it cost 800 yen for 24 hours. There were coin parking lots around 800–1,200 yen. The Hotel Facility was clean, with a calm lobby atmosphere as well—we were very satisfied. Amenities such as face wash, cleansing products, and skincare items were available on the first floor. I’d like to stay here again when traveling to the Otaru area. Thank you very much to all the staff members.

    With Onsen Access

    I chose this Hotel because it is along the canal and has an Onsen. The Hotel was clean, the front desk staff were helpful, and it was a comfortable stay.

    Wonderful Hotel

    Late check-in and a short stay, but the room was very relaxing and a lovely space. The breakfast, including freshly grilled salmon, was delicious and enjoyable. It was great to stay here during my visit to Otaru after a long time. I would love to come back for a more leisurely stay.

    Overall, it was clean.

    It was a lovely classical Hotel facing the canal. The large public bath was crowded, and it was so busy that I couldn't even use the hairdryer after bathing. The bathroom is an Onsen, so the floor was quite slippery. The Room's bathroom and toilet were clean, but since it was a unit bath style, the sink was very small and difficult to use.

    First time in 30 years!

    It was my first stay in 30 years. The atmosphere has shifted from stylish to more of a classic and profound charm, giving a sense of history, which was delightful. It was conveniently located near Otaru Station.

    Would love to stay again.

    I chose this Hotel because it is located along the canal. Although I arrived a bit earlier than the check-in time, I was allowed to access my Room. The Room felt a little small, but taking a bath while enjoying the illuminated canal view was an extraordinary and delightful experience. The free massage chair was also a nice touch. I would love to stay here again if I have the chance.

    The outdated Onsen facility was disappointing.

    I made the reservation without hesitation after seeing the hotel's promotion and reviews, but the facility was more outdated than expected and not very user-friendly. The highly-praised breakfast seemed average for Hokkaido. The onsen by the canal had limited washing areas, which was frustrating. While the location and staff service were good, I am unsure if I would use this hotel again.

    A stylish Hotel matching the atmosphere of Otaru Canal

    Located in front of Otaru Canal, offering a great location. The ship-themed design and stylish interiors were impressive, but the rooms were smaller than expected. I chose this place for the Onsen, but it was crowded, and I had to wait for a spot in the washing area, which was disappointing.

    Room dirty

    The room was dirty. There were stains on the table, which came off when wiped. Was the table not cleaned? There was hair in the bathroom as well... Everywhere was dirty. The food wasn't very tasty either.

    It was okay.

    The view of the Otaru Canal from the window was nice, but it was slightly different from what I had imagined, which was a bit disappointing. The atmosphere was calm and pleasant. Although there is no open-air bath in the men's bath area, the view was beautiful and enjoyable. The staff at the front desk and dining area were very friendly and greeted us with smiles, creating a refreshing experience. Breakfast had fewer seafood options than expected, but there were plenty of other varieties available. I came by car, but it was difficult to find the parking lot location, and the parking spaces were narrow, which made it challenging.

    Perfect for your journey in Central Hokkaido.

    The hotel's location was excellent. Although I didn't have high expectations for the meals, the dishes prepared by the experienced chef were very delicious. When three people stay, the placement of an extra bed makes it difficult to watch TV, there is insufficient space for car drop-offs, and there are too few sofas in the lobby to use comfortably. However, being close to the station and having a great location for sightseeing with relatively good pricing makes this one of the best accommodations.

    It is difficult to identify specific features.

    Apart from the dinner staff, nothing particularly stood out. Dinner was generally delicious, but breakfast was honestly underwhelming. During busy times, handling of food and overall service could be improved. Additionally, loud instructions among staff were unpleasant; please address such matters discreetly in non-guest areas.

    The view of the Otar...

    The view of the Otaru Canal from the window was beautiful. The breakfast buffet included seafood and Ainu cuisine, which were very delicious. I also got to enjoy the ankake yakisoba I had been wanting to try.

    Room with a view of Otaru Canal

    The Room offered a great view of the Otaru Canal. Sightseeing boats pass by carrying passengers. It's especially beautiful in the evening when the lights are on. The Otaru Canal has been an important part of industry both in the past and present.

    The room, Onsen, and...

    The room, Onsen, and amenities were excellent. However, I was hoping for a room with a view of the canal as I had mentioned to my husband, but unfortunately, we were given a room without that view.

    ・This time, we stayed at Hotel Sonia Otaru as a group of four close friends. The Room was spacious enough to comfortably accommodate an extra bed, and we still had plenty of space to enjoy playing cards together at the table in the middle. Starting with the kind parking staff, all the hotel staff were very courteous. In particular, the elderly lady who guided us in the breakfast restaurant provided excellent explanations and thoughtful service, making our meal enjoyable. The breakfast buffet was deliciously seasoned and of high quality—I think this is something worth boasting about more! The natural Onsen in Otaru is rare and has an excellent water quality that made our skin smooth, warmed our bodies thoroughly, and prevented us from feeling cold afterward. The pricing is very reasonable; however, even if it were slightly higher, providing mineral water for each guest in every room would further enhance the hotel's impression.     It was a bit disappointing.

    We stayed with five people during the New Year holidays. Perhaps because it was fully booked, we couldn't get any lotion as it was out of stock. Also, the humidifier in the Room seemed to be broken; although it had water, it didn't humidify, and we were concerned about the dryness. Additionally, we would have appreciated a bit more consideration regarding the seating at breakfast. (We were using it with five people, but they said we would be split into four and one, so when we said we would wait until we could sit as three and two, they gave us an unpleasant look.) The location in front of the Otaru Canal was excellent, and the food was undeniably delicious, so it was a bit disappointing.

    The temperature in the Room was not quite right.

    Stayed at the end of the year. Located along the canal, a highlight of sightseeing in Otaru City, the Room faced both the canal and the sea, making it geographically favorable. It can't be helped that there are many foreigners since it's a tourist spot, but fortunately, the neighbors were not too bothersome. The Room's Facility was appropriate for the price, but the heating was too hot, and despite having an air humidifier and purifier, my throat got dry, and when I turned it off at night, it was naturally cold in the morning. There was a large public bath on the top floor, which was nice, but the changing room was cold.

    The service was good.

    The toilet was clogged, but the front desk's response was prompt and courteous... However... the disinfectant spray in the Room... although there was some left, it was completely unusable/// The Room was... clean, and being on the canal side of the top floor, we enjoyed the best location...     Hotel with a view of the Otaru Canal

    At the hotel along the Otaru Canal, you can enjoy a view of the canal from the canal-side room. The large public bath was an Onsen where I could relax leisurely. The breakfast was also delicious.

    I had a pleasant stay.

    I was grateful to stay in a corner Room overlooking the Otaru Canal. The staff's response was good, but I was particularly pleased with the consideration and thoughtfulness of the hall manager (in a black shirt) at the first-floor restaurant "Iruonai? Ironai?", which made for a happy meal. I am grateful.

    The location was great!

    The location was excellent with the Otaru Canal right in front. The Room, bath, amenities, and breakfast were fine, but the person cleaning the lobby restroom ignored my greeting, which felt unpleasant. I mentioned that I might have dropped my sunglasses from my chest into the restroom trash bin, but after the trash (hand towels) was collected, they didn't even look for it, and the front desk just said it hadn't been turned in. It seems unlikely that the person with the bad attitude would find it and turn it in. In that sense, the front desk was also less accommodating than other Hotels...

    The room was clean, and since it was on the canal side, I spent my time soothed by the gentle lights. The breakfast was delicious, and I will visit again.

    Various disappointments.

    I have stayed at many hotels before, but this time was truly disappointing. The most unpleasant experience was the public bath. There were only five washing stations and dressing tables, yet there were many times more people, and as soon as you opened the bath door, you saw naked people lined up waiting for a washing station. Those soaking in the bath were constantly watching for an open washing station, leading to a battle for spots. It would have been better if there were buckets for rinsing, but there weren't, so I couldn't go back to the changing room and had to wait completely naked, which was stressful. When I finally got out, there was a battle for the sinks. If a staff member had been managing the entrance, such a situation wouldn't have occurred. I was a bit worried seeing some elderly people waiting naked. As for the room, I was particularly bothered by the dust. When I tried to open the blinds, they were covered in dust. When I put water and tea in the fridge, they froze solid, and when I requested only towel replacement and amenities for cleaning, only towels were provided. When I tried to look at the exhibits on the sofa in the lobby, the display shelves were so dusty that I couldn't focus on anything else. The next day, even though I put up a "Do Not Disturb" sign, I couldn't sleep because of the loud vacuuming, probably because the next room checked out. This hotel seems to be a bit old, and while it's not wrong to call it retro, dust and the use of the public bath have nothing to do with that. After reading various reviews, I found many similar complaints, which means they haven't been addressed. In particular, the response regarding the public bath said to inquire at the front desk about congestion, but if they provided a paper explaining the situation at check-in or had staff manage the entrance, such a situation wouldn't occur. I think improvements should be made to avoid naked queues, as not all hotel guests are in perfect health. The view from the room and the location were very convenient and lovely, which made it all the more disappointing. If there were more consideration for the guests, I would want to stay even if it were a bit older or more expensive. It's sad that when I think of Otaru, the first thing that comes to mind is the disappointing hotel.

    I stayed in the North Wing, but the room's facilities were outdated. The walls seemed thin, and the noise from the neighboring room was loud, making it hard to sleep. The breakfast was good. The staff were also kind.

    A group of four women came without any dinner plans. We were at a loss, so we asked the front desk, and they kindly and thoroughly guided us. We made a phone reservation and had a wonderful time. Thank you very much!!
