Should I have taken photos of the dirty areas?

Right after check-in, I had to clean dirt in the bathroom, and I was disappointed by the dust beside the bed. It only added to my travel fatigue.

The Room is in terrible condition.

I stayed for one night in a twin room with breakfast included. Breakfast was served on the top floor with a great view, and it was very delicious and wonderful, but the Room was terrible. The amenities and size were sufficient, but there was a hole in the floor between the beds, stuffed with tissues. The bathroom was a unit bath, but there were countless black spots on the ceiling (mold?), and it looked dark and dirty, which was unpleasant. On the right side behind the toilet, something that had been fixed there was missing, leaving an open hole. After using the shower, about three clear handprints appeared on the glass from the steam, which also felt very unsettling. It cost over 30,000 yen per night, and I honestly don’t think this is acceptable. I have stayed at various Nikko Hotels before, but I don’t think I will ever stay here again.

Convenient for visiting Zenkoji Temple, and the breakfast buffet was excellent.

Conveniently located near Nagano Station, with a straight route from in front of the Hotel to the Zenkoji temple approach on foot or by bus, making it ideal for visiting the temple. The breakfast buffet was excellent, served at the top-floor restaurant with an open view and a wide variety of options. We stayed in a twin Room on the 4th floor; the Room and in-room bath were at a typical Business Hotel standard.

A Zenkoji Temple Visit for Three Generations

We stayed here for a trip to visit Zenkoji Temple with three generations: my mother in a wheelchair, my father, my spouse and I, and our daughter and son. The Room was clean, spacious, and very comfortable to spend time in. We had high expectations for breakfast, but the bread quickly became hard and was a bit difficult for my parents in their 80s to eat, which was slightly disappointing. Still, the Room, Facility, and bath were all very clean, and we appreciated having a separate toilet so we could bathe comfortably. Thank you very much. This is a Hotel I would recommend.

Worth staying at even considering the distance from the station.

The friendly and courteous staff (at the front desk, in the restaurant, and housekeeping), the delicious breakfast served in a spot with a great view, and the quiet operation of the air conditioning/heating and refrigerator all made for a safe and comfortable stay. When I forgot my key card in my Room, it was right at check-in time and the front desk was busy, but you handled it smoothly, which was very helpful. A staff member explained visiting Zenkoji Temple with such enthusiasm that it made us feel happy too. Thank you very much for all your help.

The staff created a wonderful atmosphere.

The Hotel had a wonderful atmosphere at the front desk counter—the face of the property. Of course, the guest rooms were spotless, and the breakfast staff were cheerful. The view was great as well—everything was excellent. A Hotel really comes down to its people. I fully support eco-friendly Hotels. That said, personally, I would prefer amenities like shampoo to be provided in bottles. (For sightseeing, Zenkoji Temple and Togakushi are both lovely, but Obuse—reachable on the Nagano Electric Railway from Shiyakusho-mae Station near the Hotel—was beautiful throughout the town, and I enjoyed exploring by bicycle from the station.) Thank you very much.

The meals are excellent, but the cleanliness needs improvement!

I stayed here while visiting Togakushi Shrine and Zenkoji Temple. In the first Room, I found hair in the bathroom that appeared to be from a previous guest, and after the manager checked it, my Room was upgraded. However, in the new Room, I again found hair on the bed sheets. After taking a photo and informing the front desk, they offered to change my Room again, but moving twice was too much of a burden, so I asked for improvements to housekeeping and stayed as is. I can overlook minor stains, but someone else’s hair is not hygienic or pleasant. The staff were very polite, which made the shortcomings in cleaning management and inspection procedures all the more disappointing. The breakfast was excellent, which only made this stay feel even more regrettable. *To avoid causing discomfort when viewing it, the photo was taken from a distance and shows the bed sheets in the second Room.*

    Highly satisfied with breakfast

The Hotel lobby has a calm atmosphere with a subtle, pleasant scent. The single Room isn’t large and is simple, but very clean. The breakfast buffet at the 16th-floor panoramic restaurant that an acquaintance recommended was excellent—not only for the view, but also for its wide selection of both Japanese and Western dishes, living up to its reputation. The desserts in particular—panna cotta, pudding, and ice cream—were all delicious, and I ended up eating too much. My only regret is that I left my phone charging cable in the Room, but that was my own fault. Overall, it was a very satisfying stay.

    The breakfast is excellent.

The location and value for money were excellent, and the breakfast exceeded expectations. It’s a Hotel I would recommend to others.

    It was very comfortable.

I had a very comfortable stay. Breakfast was served in time slots, which meant the restaurant wasn’t crowded and that was great. The food was delicious as well. The Room was clean and comfortable. The location was central and very convenient for both work and sightseeing.

    We stayed for multiple nights!

I stayed for two nights to visit Zenkoji Temple. The building itself felt a bit old, but it has been designed with practical, thoughtful touches. I arrived late at night, but I was able to park in the parking lot behind the Hotel at just the right time, which was a big help. The highlight of this trip was being taken to Zenkoji’s morning service! The guide’s talk was enjoyable, and it was a meaningful experience. (I’d love to join again.) Highly recommended. The drinks in the Room refrigerator included beer, apple juice, and water. They were free of charge, and I really appreciated this kind of service. (They were replenished on the second day as well.) The capsule coffee was also delicious. Breakfast was delicious as everyone says. Even the desserts felt very Nagano-like; my favorite was the soba pudding. Overall, if I had to mention one drawback, it would be that the toilet and bath are combined and feel cramped—especially the toilet, which is so small that it feels like your legs might hit the wall. However, considering this price and all the other services, it’s understandable. This is a Hotel I’d happily stay at again. (I’d like to come back for next year’s Gokaicho!)

    About Amenities

My stay was fine, and I stayed for two nights. Regarding amenities, there was no clock in the Room, and it was inconvenient to check the time on my phone. I would like one to be provided. It is not hygienic that the Room slippers are not disposable and are reused sandals. I bought slippers at a nearby store and used those. Even if there is signage saying items are disinfected or hygienic, it is ultimately up to the cleaning staff to make that true. I have heard from someone currently working in cleaning that cups and glasses may be washed with hands that have just cleaned the bath or toilet. So I could not imagine that the sandals were being properly washed either. (I wash the cups, glasses, and electric kettle myself before using them.) The TV remote had a cover on it, but I was worried whether it is replaced every time, so I removed it and wiped it with an alcohol disinfecting wipe. (Guests would feel reassured if they could put on a new cover themselves.) The hair dryer’s air intake was covered in dust. I tried wiping it with a disinfecting wipe, but it had hardened and would not come off at all. It felt very unpleasant. This was my first time experiencing this at a well-known Hotel. As this is a JAL (Okura) group Hotel, there is a sense of trust, but hygiene is still a concern. There are many things one could mention such as bedding, but above all I want disposable slippers and a clean hair dryer. I hope you will take steps to improve what can be improved.

This is an exceptionally comfortable Hotel, except for the bathroom.

This trip to Nagano was mainly for Zenkoji Temple, the Higashiyama Kaii Gallery, and dinner at The Fujiya Gohonjin, so I chose Hotel JAL City for its convenient location. For a Business Hotel-style stay, I was more than satisfied. The price was reasonable, and since I stayed on the J Floor, I appreciated the UCC machine with black tea and Japanese tea as well as the complimentary in-room refrigerator items. The staff were sincere and efficient, which made the stay very comfortable. Breakfast offered a great view and good variety; the Nozawana ochazuke was especially delicious. After checkout I also had lunch at Bireika, and it did not disappoint—seeing many guests coming in from an entrance not connected to the hotel made it clear I’m not the only one who thinks it’s excellent. The only drawback is that the bathroom is a unit-bath type. As a solo guest with bath salts and amenities provided, it wasn’t a major issue for me, but I rated that point slightly lower as a reference for others. A large public bath would make it perfect. Hotel JAL City, The Fujiya Gohonjin, and even nearby Patisserie Vingt-Sept were all wonderful, so I’d love to stay here again when visiting Nagano. Thank you very much.

    Convenient Location

Repeat stays over the past four years

Four years ago, I joined a ski demo event in Sugadaira, but since my wife doesn’t ski, we stayed in Nagano City. By chance, it was during Zenkoji Temple’s Gokaicho, and she rated our stay very highly. So for this year’s Hakuba Goryu skiing trip, we again based ourselves in Nagano City and chose this Accommodation, and it was very comfortable. (Thank you for lending us the DVD player!) We hear next year will be Zenkoji Temple’s Gokaicho as well, so we’ll be back!

I believe it is a sophisticated accommodation.

The room is compact yet very comfortable. Thoughtful touches include capsule coffee and a selection of teas. Breakfast offers a variety of ingredients and was delicious. The restaurant is located on the top floor, allowing guests to enjoy views of Nagano city and the snow-covered mountains while dining. A Multiple Night Stay would be ideal to savor the diverse ingredients offered. If there is one minor drawback, it would be that the bathtub feels narrow and cramped, but this is understandable.

This is my third stay (always using the J Floor).

Compared to my first visit (5 years ago), I think the service has improved. During my first stay, I tried Mirable and liked it so much that I purchased one for home. On my second visit, I enjoyed tea time at the Sky Lounge (available only for J Floor guests) with snacks, drinks, and light meals while relaxing. This time, although the Sky Lounge access was no longer available, during my 2-night stay, I appreciated the thoughtful touches like a well-stocked fridge with plenty of drinks and refills for the coffee maker. The breakfast is always delicious with a wide variety of options. However, since it was New Year’s season, the menu included traditional Osechi dishes and remained almost identical for two days—this was slightly disappointing. The renovated room is stylish but feels a bit smaller due to reduced storage space. It would be great if the hairdryer could be upgraded to match those in other hotels. By the way, their coffee maker is used in various accommodations across different regions—it’s convenient as you can easily make not just coffee but also tea or green tea! I even use one at home myself.

    Affordable and Convenient Hotel

We stayed for one night as a couple to enjoy sightseeing (visiting Nagano Zenkoji Temple and apple picking). The accommodation is conveniently located, about 6-7 minutes from Nagano Station and a 20-minute leisurely walk to Zenkoji Temple. We arrived by car around 11:00 AM on the day of our stay and informed the hotel front desk that we wanted to use the parking facility. They immediately guided us to the parking area, which was helpful as we thought parking wouldn't be available until check-in. It saved us the trouble of finding a parking spot for sightseeing. Breakfast was served at the restaurant on the top floor of the hotel, offering a wide variety of dishes that were satisfying. However, breakfast time slots were pre-determined, and since we checked in around 4:00 PM, our preferred time slot was already fully booked. We had to slightly adjust our schedule for the next day because of this. While some parts of the facility felt slightly dated, considering the accommodation fee, it offered great value overall and is a recommended hotel!

    Delicious breakfast

Located between Nagano Station and Zenkoji Temple, making it very convenient for visiting the temple. Every year, I look forward to the new chestnut rice, and there are shops along the approach road, which is great. The Hotel breakfast is also vegetable-focused and full of local gourmet delights, which is delightful.

J Room (Non-Smoking) Smells Like Cigarette Smoke

I reserved a non-smoking room and was assigned one, but the curtains and walls were permeated with cigarette odor, making it so unpleasant that I felt nauseous. It was an uncomfortable and unpleasant experience. I use this accommodation every week, but this time was the worst. This week, I stayed in a different room, which had no unpleasant smell at all. If a room smells this strongly of cigarettes, it should be noticeable during cleaning. Since we pay to stay in a comfortable room, please provide an environment that matches the value paid. While there is a note about penalty fees for smoking in rooms, please ensure proper cleaning is done as well. Please take care of this issue moving forward.

    Journey from Zenkoji to Togakushi

We chose this accommodation for its convenient location for visiting Zenkoji Temple and Togakushi. There is parking available near the hotel. The front desk staff provided very polite service, and the room was excellent. We had dinner in Nagano City and only had breakfast at the hotel. The food was delicious, including the dessert, which we enjoyed a lot!

    It was great.

Stayed on the J Floor. The room itself, along with the services (coffee machine, beverages, alcohol service), and amenities were excellent. However, the air conditioning was outdated and not very effective (perhaps due to maintaining the beautiful view, which allows sunlight to heat up the room during the day). The staff at the hotel were also very accommodating. Breakfast was excellent—enjoyed dining with a great view. The meal offered a variety of Japanese and Western options and was delicious. Thank you!

A JAL Hotel Rooted in the Community

Due to railway circumstances, I stayed at the accommodation on short notice. The bathroom seemed to be renovated and was clean. Overall, it has the atmosphere of a long-established JAL Hotel that has been welcoming guests in Nagano for many years.

    It is a good Hotel.

The Hotel is a bit far from the station, but it is a good place to stay. I stayed on the Club J Floor and had a comfortable experience. As for parking, I had to use the designated outdoor parking lot at the back, which made the car interior extremely hot due to being outdoors. I would appreciate consideration for improvements such as an underground parking facility. Thank you.

    How is the cost performance?

At check-in, I was informed via a notice that the Room phone could not connect to the front desk (due to malfunction). Guests are advised to use the phone in the elevator hall or call externally if they need assistance. This seems unusual for a Business Hotel. It was also my first time staying at a hotel without a shower cap among the amenities. The distance from the station makes it hard to say it offers good value for money. While breakfast had variety, this level of service has become standard even in Business Hotels recently.
