  Forest Accommodation Tsumugisha

  I was amazed that such rich nature still remains so close—about an hour by car from the city center. Because it’s a private whole-house rental, we could relax at our own pace without worrying about anyone around us. Rather than doing anything special, we spent time lounging on the veranda, listening to the sounds of nature, and taking long baths. We truly enjoyed “doing nothing”—something that’s easy to forget in everyday life. The renovated traditional farmhouse was apparently done by the owner personally, and it’s beautifully crafted—carefully preserving the charm of old materials while fitting seamlessly into modern living. It feels less like an Accommodation and more like being welcomed into someone’s cherished home. Since it’s an old house in a mountain village, you may occasionally encounter small insects—but that too is part of being surrounded by nature. As an Accommodation in the forest, it was well stocked with insect-repellent items, and we really appreciated the owner’s thoughtful attention to detail. We also spent our time fully immersed in our senses—birdsong, wind through the trees, swaying branches, and even the scent of each season—things you don’t usually notice in daily life. And most memorable of all was the bath: wonderfully rustic, almost like soaking in a semi-open-air bath. Being able to relax in hot water while feeling nature so close by was truly luxurious. We would love to visit again!

As this Accommodation is a renovated Meiji-era traditional house that we restored ourselves, there may be a few inconveniences, but we are honored that you enjoyed the experience as part of your time in this mountain village—one of Tokyo’s hidden corners.
