    A truly wonderful accommodation you’ll never forget

    We visited as a group of four—my grandparents, my mother, and me—to celebrate my grandmother’s 80th birthday. My grandparents love traveling and have visited many places around the world, including Japan, but they said this experience was truly exceptional. In particular, the concierge who assisted us was wonderful—thank you very much for your thoughtful care and attention. Dinner at the Italian restaurant SEME was also a fantastic experience; both the owner’s warm personality and the food were outstanding. Next time, we would love to visit again with my father as well, who couldn’t join us this time. It was a truly wonderful one-night, two-day stay. Thank you very much.

    Birthday

    We stayed here to celebrate my daughter’s birthday. Since it was a private rental, we were able to enjoy our stay with our grandchildren. The rooms were very spacious and comfortable. The firefly viewing tour was also included, and we saw many fireflies, making it a wonderful memory.

    An Extraordinary Accommodation

    Passing the low eaves and black walls of Odagaki Shoten, you follow the wall to a wooden gate. Enter the code to open it and you step into an inner courtyard. It is a tasteful garden, with green moss and trees arranged around a stone-set karesansui (dry landscape). Beyond it, a row of historic buildings forms the Accommodation. Walking along the edge of the garden, you reach a small old entrance and complete check-in in a Taisho-era reception room. Leaving the reception room, you can look out over the courtyard through rippled glass along the corridor. In the Japanese-style Room, modern essentials such as the TV and outlets are discreetly placed to preserve an old-world feel, while clean, bright lighting and underfloor heating bring quiet comfort. Through the corridor glass, you see the carefully tended courtyard; beyond it are guests using the café space. The garden seems to separate everyday life from something apart. For dinner, we were kindly driven to and from a kaiseki restaurant; afterward we simply relaxed in our spacious Room. Breakfast was served in a tea room—beautifully prepared Japanese dishes that we thoroughly enjoyed. From check-in to check-out, we did not encounter anyone inside this large property and were able to spend our time entirely at ease. This is not merely an Accommodation for staying overnight; it may be an Accommodation that asks for readiness—to place yourself in an undisturbed retreat where time passes slowly, let your thoughts wander without purpose, and savor a comfortable escape from daily life.

    A space infused with the aesthetics of Hiroshi Sugimoto. A minimalist Accommodation where every detail is in harmony.

    I recently stayed at “Mameya” in Tamba-Sasayama. As an admirer of Hiroshi Sugimoto, knowing he was involved with this Accommodation made it a truly extraordinary experience that far exceeded my expectations. Throughout the property, you can feel a strong sense of intention and craftsmanship, yet nothing feels overbearing—its minimalist design is beautifully balanced in quiet harmony. Even down to the kitchenware and furnishings, every item was carefully chosen to complement the refined atmosphere without disrupting it in the slightest. What surprised me most was the incredible selection of drinks. Opening the fridge and drawers revealed an impressive lineup that would satisfy coffee lovers, tea lovers, and alcohol lovers alike. Upon arrival, we were served delicious ohagi from the neighboring Odagaki Shoten as welcome sweets in the tea room—a wonderfully soothing start to our stay. During our visit, my wife and I each found our own favorite spot to unwind. She spent time relaxing in the reception room furnished with charming Taisho-era pieces, while I enjoyed sitting in an original chair in the living room, gazing at a beautiful karesansui rock garden through glass doors set perfectly at eye level—an indulgent moment of calm. The bath also deserves special mention. The refreshing hinoki cypress bath features a large window that lets you enjoy an elegant inner courtyard garden all to yourself while soaking. Bathing as natural light streamed in—and watching trees reflected on the clear water—was pure bliss that deeply restored both body and mind. Above all, we are truly grateful to Mr./Ms. ○moto, our concierge. Thanks to their thorough explanations during check-in, we gained a deeper appreciation of the architecture and space, which made our stay even more meaningful. (Mr./Ms. ○moto—I am very sorry for forgetting to return the bicycle key at the end!) Everything—the space itself, its details, and the hospitality—was wonderfully comfortable throughout our stay. This is a special Accommodation I would love to revisit again in another season.

    A refined space that feels both historic and modern.

    Passing under the striking sign that reads “Mameya,” you’re welcomed by a beautiful garden and a traditional Japanese house. First, you’re shown to a Western-style room that feels like stepping back into the Taisho era, with stained glass, elegant furniture, and a chandelier. As you soak in the Taisho-modern atmosphere, you’re served a welcome amuse of ohagi and kuromame tea. Meanwhile, the guest room is purely Japanese in style. Gazing out at the superb karesansui garden, you’ll truly feel “this is Japan,” then sleep soundly in the bedroom. The staff were warm and attentive to every detail, making it a stay that refreshed both body and mind. I’d love to visit again.

    We stayed for two ni...

    We stayed for two nights over Christmas as a family. We received thoughtful messages even before our stay, which made us feel at ease on our way there. We had breakfast both mornings, and the menus were different each day, which we enjoyed. For dinner, we ate in our Room on the first night, and had wild boar hot pot at a nearby restaurant on the second night. The Room was well equipped with wine glasses and tableware, as well as a knife and cutting board, so we could enjoy meals in the Room too. A concierge provided Shuttle Service to the restaurant, so we could relax and enjoy ourselves without any hassle. The Facility was very clean, and almost all Rooms—as well as the hallways—had underfloor heating installed. Even in midwinter, we stayed warm and comfortable. We felt relaxed throughout our stay and would love to visit again.
