    A One-of-a-Kind Experience

    This is the only accommodation located in Kanau, famous for its connection to the "Taiheiki." The accommodation accepts only 1-2 groups per day. The building was originally a residence of a local noble family and served as a temporary palace for the Southern Court, which resisted the Northern Court. It has been renovated into a hotel and restaurant, offering guests a unique opportunity to experience history by staying in what was once an imperial residence. While the facilities and meals may not match those of luxury hotels, the owner, who comes from a long-standing noble family that has protected this area for generations, can share fascinating stories about medieval history upon request. Adjacent to the accommodation is a museum, and nearby on higher ground lies the tomb of Kitabatake Chikafusa. However, there are no other major tourist attractions in this area. This accommodation serves as a base for those wishing to explore Kanau's serene countryside. Please note that transportation is very limited; while there are buses from JR Gojo Station, they run only a few times per day. We recommend checking bus schedules carefully before planning your visit.

    Stay at the Historic Kanae Imperial Villa, Where History, Architecture, and Human Endeavors Come Alive

    A private accommodation renovated from the nationally designated Important Cultural Property "Hori Family Residence" and the former imperial residence of Kanae was chosen for our stay in Nara, with a barbecue-inclusive plan. We also requested breakfast in the main building, which dates back to the Muromachi period. After breakfast, we had the opportunity to hear various stories. The history of the Hori family is deeply intertwined with key moments in Japanese history, starting from the Jokyu War through to the Southern Court era, Meiji Restoration, February 26 Incident, and post-war periods. Hearing directly from a member of this distinguished family about their lived experiences made it far more impactful than typical historical site explanations. We were also intrigued by discussions on past renovations and future preservation efforts for this historic property. Our accommodation was a renovated building originally constructed as an Edo-period row house within grounds where emperors of the Southern Court once resided. While maintaining its historical exterior charm, inside featured modern Western-style rooms with comfortable sofas and spacious baths that allowed us to relax fully. With Wi-Fi available and complete privacy ensured by renting out an entire building, it was a truly comfortable stay. The expansive surroundings meant no concerns about noise disturbances; though it was cloudy during our visit, we heard that clear nights offer breathtaking stargazing opportunities. The barbecue we enjoyed in the garden on-site was deliciously prepared with minimal effort required on our part for setup or cleanup. Still, grilling together while chatting created lively moments filled with laughter as we savored generous portions of meat and large vegetables followed by yakisoba noodles at the end. Despite being wintertime with some chilliness outdoors, gathering around warm charcoal fire as a family made for an unforgettable experience. Nearby attractions included remnants of railway structures from Japan National Railways' unfinished Goshin Line project—quietly standing tracks and tunnels offered memorable exploration opportunities during walks around these sites—and at an adjacent Historical Folk Museum showcasing valuable artifacts passed down through generations within Hori Family further deepened appreciation towards rich heritage tied closely alongside them. History-rich architecture combined alongside traditional thatched-roofed settings enhanced uniquely atmospheric barbecuing under open skies—a multifaceted immersion into human endeavors leaving lasting impressions upon hearts alike ours here today! Next time visiting again surely trying local game cuisine would be something worth looking forward toward experiencing firsthand!

    It was an exceptional accommodation.

    The main building, once used as the imperial residence of the Southern Court, is now selectively utilized as a restaurant. The accommodation has been fully renovated from a building adjacent to the gate and features two bedrooms, a lounge, a kitchen, a bright bathroom, and clean toilets. Dinner consisted of various game dishes, while breakfast was enjoyed on the terrace overlooking Hanyu River under the morning sun. The host shared fascinating stories about this nationally designated Important Cultural Property. We are grateful for the opportunity to stay at such a special accommodation. Even with our pet accompanying us, the facility was well-equipped and allowed for pleasant walks in the surrounding area.
