A Luxurious Traditional Japanese House Stay to Satisfy All Five Senses
This was my third visit to Ojika. Despite being easily accessible by ferry from Hakata Port, the island offers a relaxing pace and private atmosphere unique to island life, making it a regular destination for me. This time, I stayed at an accommodation that is a historic former merchant house available for private rental. With no meals included, I could enjoy my stay without worrying about time constraints, feeling as if I were in my own vacation home and truly relaxing. The luxurious hinoki cypress bath was particularly delightful with its soothing aroma, melting away all travel fatigue. The building retains the charm of a traditional Japanese house while featuring modern facilities for ultimate comfort. The spacious garden adds to the serene ambiance that helps you forget the hustle and bustle of city life, and the location offers stunning views of the sunrise in the morning—simply perfect! Additionally, its proximity to the port is convenient, and there are charming local cafes and breakfast spots nearby where you can leisurely explore and savor island time at your own pace.

Enjoy the lifestyle of Ojika in a space supervised by Alex Kerr.
I decided to book a traditional Japanese house supervised by Alex Kerr that I had been curious about for a while. It was a solo two-night trip to a remote island starting from the weekend. Honestly, I’m not good with boats, and the over two-hour ferry ride from Sasebo made me hesitate, but once I arrived, it was truly like stepping into nostalgic Japan. As soon as I landed, I felt glad to have come! Although there wasn’t much information available online beforehand and I was worried about shopping and dining options, the accommodation "Nichigetsuan" where I stayed had a retro-style izakaya just about one minute away on foot and even a supermarket within walking distance. My worries were unnecessary! Most importantly, upon arrival, the staff kindly waited for me at the ferry disembarkation point just for me??? It was so helpful to be able to consult them about various concerns right away. During my stay, there was an unexpected water leakage issue that made me panic momentarily; however, their 24-hour contact phone really worked! Since it’s an entire house rental property, nighttime communication can sometimes feel uncertain—but they came immediately and resolved everything promptly which gave me peace of mind. This time around my stay was in what seemed like more of an urban area within Ojika Island? But it seems there are other traditional houses in different locations and sizes too—so next time I'd love to visit with family and try staying in one of their larger homes. One note: Alex Kerr's rooms are so comfortable you might not want to leave them—but do bring your own loungewear! Bringing your favorite comfy clothes is highly recommended. The hinoki cypress bath is also delightful—perhaps consider bringing bath salts or similar items for added relaxation. I’ll definitely visit again.
