    It is a nice Room.

    I stayed in the special Room, and it was a great Room just like the photos. Highly recommended.

    Great view

    We were satisfied with the view of the waterfall and green mountains from our guest Room, and the Room was clean as well. I stayed with my mother, who is nearly 90, and we both enjoyed the delicious meals. There were many young staff members, and everyone worked hard, which left a good impression. The staff member who guided us to our Room was a foreign national and very polite, but perhaps due to nervousness there was almost no explanation about the Room (slippers, yukata, bath guidance, etc.). For example, women can choose their preferred yukata pattern, but I only found that out at check-out (laugh). I think the autumn foliage will be beautiful, so I would like to stay again if I have the chance.

    Single occupancy

    I stayed at Koyama Ryokan hoping to recover from summer fatigue in the cool climate of Aso. The Room was clean, and the Onsen Facility was well equipped, including an open-air bath. The meals were delicious without needing any add-ons or changes, and I felt it offered excellent value for money. If breakfast started a little earlier, it would be perfect.

    A Warm Accommodation

    The open-air bath is spacious and the views are wonderful. The proprietress at the dining area and the staff offered warm, unpretentious hospitality and thoughtful care. Of course, a good Accommodation has great meals and Facility, but it reminded me again that it is ultimately made complete by the people. I was personally very happy that our futons were not put away during breakfast.

    Thank you very much.

    We stayed here as a preview for next year’s group trip and also to enjoy ourselves. The variety of dishes was great, but we felt the portions were a little small. It was fine for me, but it may feel insufficient for guests with bigger appetites.

    We enjoyed both brea...

    We enjoyed both breakfast and dinner, with a wide variety of dishes and even the serving containers. The yamame (trout?) could be eaten whole, head and all; the spherical dishware was fun; and the simmered items were great too. There was plenty of grilled meat, and they even served ayu (sweetfish). The women in our group couldn’t finish everything, so we were able to take the rice balls as a late-night snack. It’s close to Shin-Aso Bridge, and about 30 minutes from Kusasenri—great location. A standard wheelchair is fine, but for an accessible buggy-style wheelchair, the elevator is just barely large enough. It can’t really be helped. One small request: after watching the sunset at Kusasenri, we had our last dinner at the Accommodation and were completely full. Having the Onsen open only until 23:00 felt a bit early. The private family bath was great though, so I guess that can’t be helped either.

    A Ryokan in Tochigi Onsen with a 300-year history dating back to the Edo period, featuring its own natural hot-spring source. You can enjoy Ayugaeri Falls, the vast nature of Aso, and crisp, clean air. 1. Guest Rooms The property appears to have been renovated after damage from the Kumamoto earthquakes. Many well-known areas such as Kurokawa Onsen typically offer 6- or 8-tatami rooms, but this one has 10 tatami mats, making it noticeably more spacious and comfortable. 2. Facility The lobby is on the 5th floor, and the older sofas give a sense of time and character. There are also international staff members who can communicate in Japanese. The dining area is on the 6th floor, with guest rooms below, and a large public bath and open-air bath on the 1st floor. From the open-air bath you can see the waterfall. Private family baths can be used at no extra charge with an advance Reservation, and there are two types: a hinoki (cypress) bath and a rock bath. 3. Dining For dinner I chose the standard Plan because I wanted to try Aso’s local specialty Akaushi beef. It was served along with sashimi; the Akaushi was tender with an excellent texture. However, I felt the overall variety was slightly lacking. Guests in their 50s and above seem to choose lower-priced options such as a pork Plan or a simpler kaiseki-style Plan. Breakfast was beautifully presented in a Japanese home-style format. In particular, it was my first time having pork-and-vegetable dishes at breakfast, which I really enjoyed. 4. Overall Review Kurokawa Onsen is already a famous tourist destination that attracts many international visitors; prices tend to be relatively high, yet it may feel somewhat limited if you are looking for especially spacious open-air baths for relaxing at length. Oyama Ryokan offers better value than Kurokawa Onsen and is recommended as a place where you can unwind your senses while experiencing Aso’s great outdoors—resting as you take in expansive scenery.
