    It was wonderful.

    I stayed for one night as a solo traveler starting on August 13. The interior design throughout the Accommodation was wonderful, yet it still felt relaxed and comfortable, so I could truly unwind. The meals were also outstanding and refined—honestly, I even found myself wondering, “Is this price really sustainable for them?” It’s an Accommodation that genuinely made me think, “I’d love to come back.”

    It was the finest French cuisine I have ever experienced.

    The last time I visited Matsurube was right after the 2008 Iwate–Miyagi Nairiku Earthquake, which triggered a massive landslide and caused the collapse of the Matsurube Ohashi Bridge. This time, it was my first return in 20 years. While traces of the past remain, it has been reborn as a small yet elegant Accommodation. It takes only about 10–20 seconds on foot from the Room to the large public bath. With just seven guest rooms in total, once day-use bathers leave in the evening, the large public bath feels almost like a private bath reserved just for you—an incredibly luxurious setup. Passing through a lovely drink bar, we head to the restaurant. It is described as “French cuisine,” but even after looking over the menu, I couldn’t quite imagine what each dish would be like. When I think of French food, classics such as foie gras, truffles, and rich butter sauces come to mind—delicious, but sometimes heavy. So what kind of French cuisine would this be? I had high expectations. But what was served far exceeded them. Each plate features two or more main ingredients—and both are ingredients that evoke a sense of place, with different flavor profiles and textures. The moment they overlap on your palate, an exquisite marriage is born. Even more interesting is that one of those two leading ingredients is always a vegetable. Vegetables are not mere supporting players here; they stand proudly as true protagonists, creating an impression reminiscent of kaiseki cuisine as well. I found myself thinking: “Japanese-French” is indeed a perfect name for it. For wine, I chose a Côtes du Rhône white made with Grenache Blanc; its dry richness and fruitiness paired beautifully with the food. I’ve had my share of French cuisine both in Japan and abroad, but I may never have been moved quite like this before. It never felt heavy; instead, subtle hidden accents throughout created deep lingering finishes. It was truly outstanding. I’m told that when the seasons change, the menu will be completely renewed as well. That means I’ll have to come back again—one more thing to look forward to. One final request: As people who want to start with “a beer for now” as soon as we arrive at an Accommodation, we’d be even happier if getting access to beer were just a little easier. Please consider it.

    We stayed here as an...

    We stayed here as an Onsen Accommodation after sightseeing in Hiraizumi. The newly renovated Room was very clean. The cuisine was creative French made with locally sourced ingredients, and everything was delicious. Upon request, they will dress you in a kimono, which made the photo session a wonderful keepsake. The service was pleasant, and we had an enjoyable stay.

    Relax and Recharge

    So many things I loved 　・Shuttle Service from Ichinoseki Station (about 40 minutes): great scenery along the way, with plenty to see such as a fallen bridge left as an earthquake memorial 　・Wonderful dinner: a handsome young chef cooks in an open, stage-like kitchen. The server’s explanations were spot-on and the hospitality was excellent 　・Onsen: the changing area and washing space have a traditional layout, but the water quality is superb and the bath amenities feel luxurious. The men’s body mist was a nice touch 　・Vending machines in the post-bath lounge area: a lineup including Suntory PSB and Umaji Village yuzu drinks, all at reasonable prices 　・Lounge service: delicious coffee, tea, and handmade sweets available anytime 　・Thoughtful breakfast: I loved starting with soup. The plate was generously filled with carefully selected ingredients A few minor points to note 　・In-house loungewear: very comfortable, but I wished it had pockets for my phone and Room key 　・Room air conditioning: it was very quiet at night, so when I woke up during the night I noticed the operating noise A personal wish 　・Instead of thick Hotel-style towels, I would have liked thin Ryokan-style Onsen towels Overall, it was a wonderful Accommodation that I’d love to visit again in another season.

    A Quiet, Relaxing Accommodation

    I had long wanted to visit Saiji Onsen, and when I heard it had been renovated, I decided to make the trip. With only seven Rooms in the entire Accommodation, I rarely ran into other guests in either the lounge or the large public bath, allowing me to relax at a leisurely pace. The newly renovated building was spotless and very pleasant throughout, and on the first floor lounge you can enjoy complimentary delicious sweets and drinks. Dinner was French cuisine. Using carefully selected ingredients, the chef prepares each dish right in front of you; every plate was beautiful and truly delicious. The quality of the Onsen water was also excellent. This has become an Accommodation I would definitely like to revisit.

    It is a good accommodation.

    The bath, French cuisine, and guest rooms are excellent. However, the staff's response at check-in and the lack of air conditioning before arrival were drawbacks.
