High-quality cuisine and exceptional hot spring water that defy the image of a secluded hot spring Accommodation
The open-air bath in the Room features 100% milky-white free-flowing natural Onsen water, offering a blissful moment as you soak while taking in mountain views and listening to birdsong. A deep sense of satisfaction—“I’ve come to a real Onsen.” I was able to fully enjoy the source water at my leisure while listening to the gentle murmur of the river. At a secluded mountain hot-spring Accommodation, you might expect simple country cooking, but Hige no Ie serves refined creative cuisine. Each dish brings out the best of local ingredients, with exquisitely balanced seasoning that naturally made me want another drink. The forest scenery seen through the mist was magical. I look forward to visiting again.

Excellent
The Room’s open-air bath featured a one-of-a-kind free-flowing hot spring. We were able to relax at a leisurely pace. The food and service were excellent.

Favorite Ryokan
I love Takayu Onsen, and my husband and I especially love the Ryokan “Hige no Ie.” We’ve stayed there many times. In the past, Reservations were only available through the Hitou wo Mamoru Kai website, but now you can also make a Reservation via IKYU. All Ryokan in Takayu Onsen offer free-flowing hot spring water direct from the source. Of course, the Onsen at “Hige no Ie” is wonderful as well—and it’s our number one reason for coming back. The slightly bluish, milky-white sulfur spring water pours in abundantly. Although there are only a few Rooms, there are separate large public baths for men and women, an open-air bath, and a private bath you can use anytime if it’s available—so you can enjoy bathing without running into many other guests. In addition, this Ryokan has two Rooms with a private open-air bath on the balcony with continuously flowing spring water. It’s a bit of a splurge, but soaking to your heart’s content in that Room is pure enjoyment. The food is also delicious, which is another reason we love this place. Every time, dinner is beautifully presented with thoughtful touches. The staff who serve the meal explain everything carefully and take attentive care of you throughout. It pairs wonderfully with sake, and by dessert you’re perfectly satisfied. Breakfast also offers just the right variety of dishes, and the rice is excellent. With outstanding baths, meals, and service all in one—this refined Ryokan with only a small number of guest Rooms comes highly recommended for anyone who wants to relax and fully enjoy an Onsen getaway.

Drawn to the milky-white hot spring waters
This is an Accommodation I’d been wanting to revisit, and I finally returned after a few years. The area smells faintly of sulfur; the mountains are fresh with new greenery, and you can hear cuckoos calling. It’s about three hours from Tokyo by bullet train and bus—just the right distance to feel away from everyday life. The Accommodation is quietly decorated with seasonal flowers and artwork, giving it a calm, relaxed, adults-only feel. There is no day-use bathing, and because it isn’t large or bustling, it may be all the easier to truly unwind. First came the Onsen I’d been looking forward to. I soaked in the milky-white water (with a slight bluish tint that looks especially beautiful when light shines through), then dozed off in the lobby with citrus-and-mint detox water—before soaking again. I worked up a good sweat; it felt as if my body’s water was being completely refreshed. This is Takayu Onsen, known for its outstanding waters fed 100% directly from the source without recirculation. The open-air bath at the Accommodation has pleasantly hot water flowing in with real force as you admire the fresh mountain green. The indoor bath is slightly cooler for a longer soak. I also appreciated that the private open-air bath can be used whenever it’s available. The meals were exactly what I came for—and once again they were deeply satisfying. The monthly kaiseki course featured abundant seasonal ingredients; everything was delicious and beautiful to look at as well. With creative touches beyond strictly traditional Japanese fare—especially in some of the palate-refreshing dishes and main plates—I couldn’t help but want a drink or two. In addition to beer and sake, they also offer local wine, whisky, gin, and more, making it genuinely fun to decide what to choose. This time my Room was a basic Japanese-style room in the main building. Sleeping on futons felt nostalgic; while some fixtures were old-fashioned, everything was clean. If you prefer newer amenities or need something easier on your knees, one of their bed Rooms may feel more spacious and comfortable. Soaking in powerful waters, enjoying excellent food with a little alcohol, and simply relaxing in this pleasant Accommodation while taking in nature’s gifts—it was my idea of an exceptional weekend getaway.

The private Onsen is wonderful.
We headed to Takayu in search of milky hot springs. The renovation was well done, and we had a very pleasant stay. The meals were delicious, but perhaps for the sake of efficiency, the first soup dish was already cold, which was disappointing. We were told to eat it while it was still warm, but it had already cooled down. The flavor was excellent and we were very satisfied with everything else afterward, so this was the only letdown.

This is an Accommodation where you can relax and unwind.
I visited Takayu Onsen to relax while enjoying the snowy scenery. The Onsen and its water quality were excellent, and since I stayed in winter, I was able to enjoy an open-air bath with snow views. The meals were carefully prepared, delicious, and served in just the right portions. The yudofu at breakfast was outstanding. The Room had been renovated, was spotless, and very comfortable. At checkout, they even cleared the snow off my car, allowing me to truly unwind and take it easy throughout my stay. I would love to visit again.

Accommodation for Adults
The road to the accommodation involves a significant mountain path. In winter, those unfamiliar with snowy roads might find it intimidating as the snowfall can be quite heavy. The accommodation itself is luxurious and elegant in every aspect. I stayed in a standard room, which felt slightly dated, but the toilet and sink had been replaced. The air conditioning was not functional, possibly due to damage from sulfur; heating was provided only by a stove. While sounds of opening and closing sliding doors or partitions from neighboring rooms were noticeable, it was quiet during nighttime hours. The onsen features milky white sulfuric water with floating mineral deposits—an absolute delight for onsen enthusiasts. The water temperature was just right, making it tempting to bathe multiple times. Sulfur crystals were encrusted around the bath area (which I found fascinating to observe). The provided hairdryer was high-end; I used a ReFa dryer for the first time here. Meals consisted of kaiseki cuisine with refined flavors that highlighted the natural taste of ingredients—a very satisfying experience overall. However, younger guests might find the seasoning too subtle (as is typical for kaiseki). The rice was glossy and delicious, while all tableware added elegance to each dish presentation. During meal service at both breakfast and dinner, the owner personally brought out one dish at a time and explained its details—a thoughtful touch! If anything could be improved, having partitions in the dining area would enhance privacy. On departure day, staff kindly cleared snow off my car for me—a much-appreciated gesture! I'd love to visit again during warmer seasons next time around!

The Onsen is excelle...
The Onsen is excellent. Both the indoor and outdoor baths offer not only great water quality but also a wonderful atmosphere. Originally described modestly as a mountain lodge, we enjoyed delicate seasonal flavors in the meals as well.

I think it is a very good accommodation.
As it is Takayu Onsen, the quality of the hot spring water speaks for itself. The room, service, and meals were all satisfying for the price paid. It's no surprise that it remains fully booked regardless of the season. If I happen to visit Fukushima again and Hige-no-Ie has availability, I would definitely like to return.
