I was surprised.
Anyway, I was amazed by the dinner menu. I truly enjoyed Chef Fujimoto’s cuisine. There’s no word that quite captures how good it was—“delicious” still isn’t enough. Honestly, the Room was simple, but the food made me want to come back. The bed was firm.

Auberge Togakushi
Stayed for two nights. The meals were carefully prepared and extremely delicious, maximizing the goodness of Nagano's blessed ingredients and the mellow spring water of Togakushi. The staff kindly provided detailed information about Togakushi, which was very helpful. Due to the very old and charming building, if I had to mention a downside, the Room along the national road was a bit noisy with car sounds. However, everything else made it a very comfortable place to stay. Would love to visit again!

It was a truly relaxing and special time.
We stayed in a traditional thatched-roof house with our family. The spacious and simple interior, along with the nostalgic scent of wood, made us feel at ease the moment we stepped inside. The light streaming through the large windows, the greenery outside soothing to the eyes, the warmth of underfloor heating, and the pleasant texture of wood created a calming environment for all five senses. The chirping of birds added to this serene atmosphere. The highlight was definitely the meals. The dinner was full of surprises and delight with unique ingredients and innovative cooking methods—each bite brought happiness! (The asparagus soup was particularly impressive.) The Nagano wine pairing (half portion) was enjoyable even for someone like me who doesn’t usually drink much alcohol—it didn’t make me feel unwell or leave any aftereffects the next day. The meal portions were just right—not too heavy but satisfying. On the following morning, we departed at 6 AM for a walk through cedar-lined paths leading to Okusha Shrine. After some light exercise, we enjoyed breakfast featuring soba porridge and mountain vegetable dishes that were both nourishing and delicious. The warm hospitality from all staff members also left a lasting impression. Thank you for such an amazing experience! We look forward to visiting again in another season.

A place for a peaceful retreat
I made a sudden reservation, seeking an extraordinary place to visit after finishing some work. It's relatively close and easily accessible from Tokyo. Centered around "water," the cuisine highlights natural ingredients, complemented by a minimalistic space, kind staff, and a talented chef. Combined with the serene atmosphere of Togakushi, my time at awai deeply resonated with both body and mind. Although the bath is not an onsen and I didn't have high expectations initially, the quality of the water was exceptional—I could feel my body completely relax in it. I highly recommend visiting Okusha Shrine early in the morning before breakfast; it's worth making an effort to go. This place may not be ideal for those prioritizing convenience, luxury amenities, premium ingredients, or bold flavors. Also, reading their website beforehand would be helpful. It was a whirlwind trip but truly enjoyable. I'll visit again during another season!

There are issues. Strongly hope for improvement.
This was the first time I felt so disappointed with an accommodation chosen through IKYU. While the facility itself is attractive, the essential service aspect was severely lacking. During our stay, it seemed that a total of four staff members—two kitchen and hall staff, a leader, and a chef—were managing operations. - The kitchen and hall staff were slow in their movements, and orders took a long time to arrive. - The hall leader lacked leadership skills, and there was no sense of teamwork or hospitality towards guests from the team as a whole. These issues left much to be desired in terms of basic service quality. Additionally, when we requested wine pairing during dinner: - It started with lukewarm cocktails that had lost their fizz. - The sparkling wine served later was also lukewarm, making it hard to enjoy its flavor fully. - Apart from being labeled "from Nagano," there seemed to be no clear intention behind pairing choices with the dishes. The overall experience was very disappointing. Furthermore, none of the dishes stood out as delicious; most left us puzzled about their taste directionality. Reflecting on this now, even at check-in when we were served "thin yokan topped with olive oil," I already questioned their culinary approach. Frankly speaking, for approximately 70,000 yen per night including two meals, I would question whether it's worth it compared to staying at nearby temple lodgings for less than half that price—which might offer greater satisfaction. The only commendable point is that the staff appeared dedicated in their efforts; however: At this level of service quality improvement requires incorporating third-party perspectives for an overall review—it seems there are numerous issues beyond what effort alone can resolve. The facility itself is excellent; my critique comes from wanting it to improve further significantly. I hope for substantial improvements in service moving forward!

I was attracted by t...
I was attracted by the interior atmosphere and made a reservation, but unfortunately, it was not worth the price. I do not recommend it. It might be acceptable at half price with No Meals Included. 1. Room I stayed in a room of the old public hall. You can hear the voices from the next room clearly. Thinking that our voices might also be heard made me uncomfortable, and we had to speak in low voices, so I couldn't relax. As others have commented, the Hotel faces a busy road leading to Nagano, and since it's not even double-glazed, I think you'll feel uneasy until late at night. I think the amenities are sufficient. 2. Service Despite having paid by card on IKYU, I was charged again at checkout. If someone other than the reserver stayed, there is a risk of being charged twice. I felt disappointed as there was no apology when I pointed it out. The parking lot is a bit far, and the road in front is one-way and narrow. A delivery truck, apparently delivering luggage to the Hotel, blocked the road, forcing us to wait for about 5 minutes. 3. Bath It's clean. It's the same as a regular household bath. It's not an Onsen. 4. Facility I am satisfied with the Facility that mixes retro charm with a modern atmosphere. The minimal and functional furniture was excellent. There are no convenience stores or supermarkets around Zenkoji, so please be careful. 5. Meal The meal did not meet the expectations or the price. The catering (?) being prepared in the kitchen at noon looked more delicious. The dish called daikon consommé tasted like drinking the juice of grated daikon. The cauliflower mousse topped with sweet shrimp was not tasty as the creaminess of the cauliflower and the smell of the sweet shrimp clashed. I didn't understand the point of using sweet shrimp. If it were a conceptual dish focusing on ingredients within a 5km radius, I might have been convinced. It was extremely low in fat and umami, and I don't think it's a meal for someone energetic enough to visit Togakushi Shrine. 6. Satisfaction I expected good food and a comfortable room, but it was not satisfactory. Also, the issues at checkout left a bad aftertaste. I do not recommend it.
