The views and the meals are wonderful.

This auberge is located in a small, quiet cove. You can step out to the shore right away, and the view from the dining area is beautiful and soothing. The owner’s home-cooked dishes are delicious—especially the simmered fish and octopus rice, which were outstanding. The water is also excellent; we were told it is tap water. A staff member mentioned that Obama’s water is said to be even better than sake.

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

I had planned to check in at 6:00 PM, but due to unforeseen circumstances I contacted them to say I would be about 30 minutes late, and they kindly agreed. I made a Reservation for a Plan with breakfast included and no dinner. The breakfast was very delicious, and I was extremely satisfied. Everything in the building was clean. The Room with a view of Wakasa Bay was wonderful. If I have the chance to visit Obama City again, I would like to stay here again.

    Impressions

We stayed during the Golden Week holidays. The breakfast was excellent. Unfortunately, dinner was the complete opposite. Not only the food, but they also didn’t seem to know which table had received items like carpaccio or simmered fish, coming over repeatedly to confirm. To top it off, we heard the owner clicking their tongue multiple times. I couldn’t tell whether it was directed at us or other guests, but there were several moments where their irritation was clearly visible, which was disappointing. If you call yourselves an auberge, I think dinner and service need improvement. There were some wonderful staff members, and since you serve such an outstanding breakfast... We will visit again.

I can’t believe there’s such a wonderful place so close by!

It was a truly wonderful 2-day, 1-night stay. Above all, I was amazed by how delicious the dinner was. You can really feel the care put into each dish through the flavors. With more dishes than we could possibly finish, it was an incredibly satisfying meal. Obama is only about an hour away by car and feels so close, yet I never knew such a lovely place existed—right under my nose. Spending time on the rocking chair, listening to the waves and reading at a leisurely pace, was precious and made me forget the busyness of everyday life. It’s a place I’d love to visit again in another season.

    Great value for money

A wonderful seaside accommodation with a modern touch, renovated from a traditional Japanese house. The shared bath was excellent. Both dinner and breakfast were course meals featuring fresh ingredients from Obama, which were highly satisfying! Thank you for preparing the birthday plate as well :) Highly recommended for anyone visiting Tsuruga!

    The location is excellent!

I stayed for one night in a sea-facing room during my solo trip. The view from both the room and the restaurant was spectacular. Falling asleep to the sound of waves and waking up to it felt truly special. While you can't see the sunrise or sunset, spending time in a small cove listening to the waves as evening falls felt like a luxurious experience. The accommodation is a renovated guesthouse, and the room entrance is just a sliding door, so you can hear sounds like footsteps from other guests. Whether this bothers you depends on personal preference, but I didn’t mind at all. Instead, I found the sound of waves soothing and enjoyed relaxing by the window in one of their chairs. Nestled among regular houses are both the accommodation and restaurant; it’s about a minute's walk through an alley to reach the restaurant, which added charm to my stay. The meals were seafood-focused with dishes like sashimi, carpaccio, simmered fish, pasta, octopus rice... everything was delicious! Breakfast included freshly cooked rice in an iron pot and fish grilled over charcoal. The room was Japanese-style with futons on tatami mats; while meals were a mix of Japanese and Western styles—so it might not fully fit what you'd call an "auberge." There wasn’t much formal service provided either—it felt more like staying at a guesthouse—but that suited me perfectly for relaxing. It’s not easy to access without a car; however, that makes it an ideal spot for those seeking peace and quiet.

    Enjoy an Adult Summer Vacation!

Auberge Minshuku. I chose this accommodation for my solo trip based on its location, views, cuisine, and reviews. Although the management seems to have changed from before, it was a wonderful experience for me. The accommodation has been renovated stylishly and functionally while maintaining its minshuku roots, making it clean and comfortable. There is no excessive service but nothing lacking either. It offers unique scenery and views that cannot be compared to other auberges. Above all, I enjoyed a relaxing time gazing at the calm and serene sea. The meals featured an array of fresh and delicious fish dishes—such a course focused solely on fish is rare, making my stay truly valuable. Talking with the owner was also a delightful experience. I would love to visit again someday—thank you very much!

    Would visit again.

This accommodation is highly recommended for those who want to enjoy delicious dishes made with an abundance of local seafood and spend a quiet holiday. We stayed in an ocean-view Japanese-style room on a weekday, which had been beautifully renovated, and the bath was comfortable. The only minor inconvenience was that the washbasin is located in the bathroom's changing area, so it might be slightly inconvenient if someone wants to use the washbasin while another person is bathing. However, since it was just us this time, there were no issues. This is why I gave one less star for "Facility." Additionally, there was an issue with checking the reservation, which led to one less star for "Customer Service." The service staff are minimal in number, and it seems that the menu has changed this year. For those expecting a typical Auberge experience or seeking luxury (luxe), this place may not meet their expectations. However, the meals prepared by the owner himself are primarily traditional Japanese cuisine without any pre-made items often found at mediocre ryokans or overly decorative modern dishes. The focus on flavor allowed us to fully enjoy seasonal seafood and seaweed dishes. The decision not to include meat in their menu felt bold yet fitting. They also offer excellent sake from Fukui Prefecture, and breakfast items like soy sauce-marinated dried fish and heshiko were authentically representative of Wakasa's culinary culture. What we appreciated most was being able to savor these meals at scenic table seating rather than on tatami mats in a traditional room setting. Additionally, even though it seemed like it was their first day working there as part-time staff?—the person assisting us had a pleasant demeanor and proved very capable. For us personally, this accommodation left such a positive impression that we would love to visit again!

The Sound of Waves as Your Lullaby

Auberge Shizumi, quietly nestled in a small fishing village by Wakasa Bay. Close your eyes, and you'll feel as if you're floating on the sea in our serene Japanese-style rooms with private baths. Enjoy a meal at our tranquil restaurant, watched over by the sacred tree, leaving both your body and soul filled with happiness.

    It is photogenic.

Thank you for your hospitality. The property looks very nice in photos. However, the renovated room is stylish but not very practical. The toilet remote was broken, and the bath was also difficult to use. For eco reasons, there was no toothbrush and no TV, which was a bit inconvenient. The meals were delicious, but not surprisingly so. The cost performance might be poor. Sorry for the strict evaluation.

    Showa's Home

In a small village with only 11 houses, the location is right in front of the sea, and the room was a simple inn that felt like a renovated Showa-era home, stripped of any excess. Without a TV, I was able to spend time leisurely by taking walks and reading books. Since the sea is just across the road, the sound of the waves was loud at night, making it difficult to sleep. It felt like a water cottage. The dinner was very delicious, and I wanted to eat it again, but due to the poor environment, I thought I should consider it carefully next time. As it is an auberge, ordinary people also came to eat, and a group of more than 10 women turned it into a pub-like atmosphere, which was extremely noisy and the worst. The atmosphere changed completely, and I quickly ate my meal and returned to my room. The trip, which was meant to be a relaxing getaway, was ruined. The staff was courteous, but I wished they had addressed the issue.
