    A Memorable Open-Air Bath

An Onsen I’d been wanting to visit ever since seeing photos. An unobstructed view out toward the sea. Golden-colored water rich in iron. It will be a once-in-a-lifetime memory, but… In summer there are horseflies and black flies, which can be scary. If you don’t like insects, I recommend choosing your season carefully. My son was bitten by a black fly, and the Accommodation staff kindly applied medicine for the bite. The buffet venue has no windows. Since this is an Accommodation with beautiful sunsets, pay attention to dinner time. The flounder sashimi and grilled turban shell were delicious. The Room has an old-fashioned feel. There was air conditioning, but the temperature was comfortable enough that we didn’t really need it. It’s a shame there are no window screens despite the beautiful ocean view—if you open the window even briefly, multiple insects can come in. My son loves fishing and seemed satisfied that he could fish at a nearby fishing port recommended by the Accommodation staff. Together with Shirakami-Sanchi, it was a valuable experience to enjoy nature as well.

The seaside open-air bath is well worth trying at least once! Highly recommended for Onsen lovers.

This was my first stay at Koganezaki Furofushi Onsen. The biggest highlight is the seaside open-air Onsen. Soaking while looking out over the Sea of Japan right in front of you felt truly luxurious. Enjoying the open-air bath with the sound of the waves is a special experience you can only have here. The water is salty due to its high mineral content, and the temperature is slightly hot, but the sea breeze feels wonderful. You can take breaks outside and enjoy a long soak at a relaxed pace. In the morning, the temperature felt just right and was very comfortable. The famous seaside open-air bath is mixed-gender, but guests can borrow bathing wear free of charge, which helps you feel at ease. That said, some women may still find it a bit uncomfortable. Quite a few men were using it without wearing bathing wear, so if you want to relax quietly, it’s best to avoid day-use hours. Even if you’re not comfortable with mixed bathing, there is also a women-only open-air bath available. A tip for future guests: sunset is the best time for the seaside open-air Onsen. If it overlaps with dinner time, you may miss the chance to bathe while watching the beautiful sunset, so I recommend adjusting your dinner schedule and prioritizing the bath. The early-morning open-air bath is also highly recommended—there are fewer people and it’s very peaceful. In the morning, bathing wear is prepared at the entrance. One downside was that there was a slight odor in my Room. There was also water leaking from the air conditioner and I was moved to another Room; however, that Room felt somewhat less appealing in terms of facilities and atmosphere than the original one. If this area improves, stays would be even more comfortable. Considering the Accommodation Fee, meals were reasonable for what they cost; those expecting something luxurious may find them a bit underwhelming. However, the tuna sashimi was excellent. More than anything else, I felt this Accommodation’s true appeal lies in being able to fully enjoy its outstanding Onsen. The staff were kind and pleasant to deal with, and above all, the Onsen exceeded my expectations. If your main goal is enjoying hot springs, this is an exceptional place well worth visiting at least once.

    Breathtaking Sunset

The beauty of the sun setting into the sea right before your eyes is unforgettable. The Room was spacious, and both the bed and flooring felt new.

The views and the Onsen are, of course, wonderful, but...

There was a bug!! In the morning, I saw a bug crawling on the tatami, which was really unpleasant. I picked it up with a tissue, but still… The Onsen baths—both the indoor bath and the open-air bath—were too hot to relax in. In the evening, the women’s seaside open-air bath was just right, and I could enjoy it slowly, which was great. However, the next morning, the mixed-gender seaside open-air bath was extremely hot. Dinner ended up being close to 7:30 pm, but they started clearing things away too early. Even though it was only around 8:00 pm, they began tidying up and the table felt empty—it was disappointing. The honeyed apple at breakfast was delicious.

    Beloved Accommodation

I am a repeat guest who has visited twice a year for the past few years, staying for two nights each time. Not only is the famous open-air bath amazing, but the food is also absolutely satisfying! Both the buffet with plenty of sashimi and the kaiseki cuisine are excellent. While the Facility is a bit old, the baths, food, service, and reasonable pricing more than make up for it. The comfort of the Room is also very satisfying. I plan to visit again in six months. Thank you very much.

    Furofushi Onsen

This year marks our third consecutive and fourth overall trip to Tohoku. We finally visited Furofushi Onsen, a place we had wanted to go for a long time. Unfortunately, the acidic and iron-rich spring water didn’t suit my mother’s or my skin. Even without entering the Onsen, both of us were extremely satisfied. Thank you very much!

An open-air bath with ocean views for relaxation and delicious meals.

The mixed-gender open-air Onsen overlooking the Japan Sea, where waves crash against the rocks, offers a unique relaxation experience. However, as it faces the sea, be cautious of sandflies that may bite if you are unclothed. The quality of the meals was exceptional. Both dinner and breakfast were outstanding in freshness and taste, making them highly recommended. This is an Onsen Ryokan you should visit at least once in your lifetime.

    Distinct Personality

Finally visited the long-awaited Furofushi Onsen. Located far from both Aomori and Akita, this visit was made possible during a leisurely time in later life. The quality of the onsen and its surroundings were impeccable, and the meals, served buffet-style, featured local ingredients and dishes. The sashimi was fresh and excellent. On the other hand, the facility is average; for example, the bathroom ventilation fan was noisy, and when turned off, snoring from neighboring rooms could be heard—reflecting facilities appropriate for its price range. However, considering its value for money (cost-performance), it can be enjoyed with proper understanding. The onsen and meals are outstandingly excellent and highly recommended. Be sure to try the open-air bath by the sea at least once. Due to its horizontally spread layout, it might be challenging for elderly guests.

The sunset from the open-air bath was absolutely amazing!!!

The ocean view from the Room was wonderful. The sunset from the open-air bath by the sea was perfect thanks to the great weather! The indoor bath and other open-air baths were also excellent. The Room was clean, and the meals were delicious.

    It was a great bath.

A simple accommodation, but the room was spacious and clean, providing a comfortable stay. The open-air bath by the sea offers unparalleled relaxation. There are separate baths for women and mixed bathing, with free bathing clothes available for both men and women. Some couples enjoyed the mixed bath together at their leisure. Thanks to the secluded location, guests can enjoy stargazing at night, peaceful walks, and a relaxing time similar to viewing from the train window of Resort Shirakami.

The seaside open-air bath is excellent.

I was worried about whether I could enjoy the open-air bath by the seaside due to strong winds, but I was able to fully appreciate the stunning view and the onsen. Other than the onsen, everything else was average. The dinner plan allowed us to choose a main dish, but many items were pre-set on the table. The grilled fish was cold, and the Inaniwa-style udon noodles were served with broth poured over them in a prepared bowl, causing the noodles to stick together. In that case, regular miso soup would have been better. Additionally, the local specialty snow carrot ice cream for dessert was frozen solid, making it difficult to eat and enjoy its flavor. This accommodation is great if you're only looking forward to enjoying an onsen by the seaside.

The Dreamy Onsen of Eternal Youth and Longevity

I visited Furofushi Onsen, which I had always wanted to go to, by taking the Resort Shirakami train. Many people come for the red bath located on the coast, so the staff efficiently followed their manual procedures. Since my main purpose was the bath, I didn’t have high expectations for anything else, but the room was new, flat, and easy to use. For meals, we chose a plan where you can select your main dish—my husband chose beef while I opted for abalone grilled in its shell. I had been looking forward to the abalone; however, it turned out that most of the dishes were seafood-based. Although I love seafood, I got tired of it midway and thought perhaps I should have chosen beef as well. The weather was bad so we couldn’t see the sunset, but it was an experience unlike any other.

The room at the very end

The facility is not barrier-free, making it challenging to carry large luggage (suitcases) up the stairs. With many Rooms and guests, guidance to the Room was not provided. Meals are limited to 90 minutes, and even with an additional all-you-can-drink option, both are restricted to 90 minutes, making it difficult to enjoy a leisurely drink while having food.

    Onsen is amazing!

The open-air bath by the sea and the large public bath with an open-air bath in the new building were both excellent. However, the large public bath in the main building was crowded with day-use guests (although it stated until 2 PM, there were still many people at 3 PM—perhaps entry is allowed until 2 PM?), which was not ideal. The room was clean, convenient, and comfortable; however, I had trouble sleeping due to loud footsteps from upstairs and noise from a neighboring room until around midnight. The front desk staff provided excellent service, but I was surprised that female staff members in the hallway neither greeted guests nor refrained from taking visible breaks. Breakfast was a buffet with delicious options and very satisfying. For dinner, the sashimi, abalone, and meat dishes were tasty as well. The dining venue exceeded expectations in terms of spaciousness. One thing to note: after being seated for dinner, a staff member stood by waiting for us to decide on drinks before taking our order—is this characteristic of northeastern Tohoku? (I experienced something similar at a Ryokan in Akita.) If so, it would be helpful if drink menus could be placed in rooms beforehand so we can decide at our own pace without feeling rushed. Despite these points mentioned above, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay thanks to the wonderful Onsen experience and favorable weather that allowed me to catch glimpses of a beautiful sunset!

    Stayed for one night...

Stayed for one night in mid-March. It took about two and a half hours from Aomori by rental car, stopping at roadside stations and sea stations along the way. The roads were easy to drive on, even with snow. The room was clean, with a beautiful view of the sea right outside. The bath was absolutely amazing! The seaside open-air bath is divided into women's only and mixed bathing areas, but since both offer the same view and conditions, there’s no particular reason for women to choose the mixed area. Guests can borrow bathing clothes for free at the front desk, but they’re unnecessary if you only use the women’s area. Since there are no washing areas by the open-air bath, you need to wash in the indoor bath first before changing back into your clothes to move to the seaside open-air bath. It’s available from sunrise to sunset; I enjoyed it right after check-in and again before breakfast. In the morning, I had it all to myself! Meals were buffet-style for both dinner and breakfast with plenty of local dishes that were delicious and enjoyable. A truly satisfying accommodation experience!

    The Onsen was great.

I went there with a friend to relax. The Onsen was soothing, and I felt warmed up. It was very nice. The meals were also delicious. I was able to see the sunset, and I was satisfied. The water temperature was a bit high, so I couldn't use the indoor bath. However, the outdoor bath had just the right temperature. Overall, I think it was good. I would like to visit again.

    Sunset Open-air Bath

This is a property I have always wanted to stay at. The open-air bath by the sea is available until sunset, and we barely made it in time. I borrowed a bathing suit and went to the women's bath, while my husband went to the mixed bath. There were many foreigners, and it was crowded. According to my husband, the mixed bath was also very crowded, with women monopolizing the area near the sea and not moving at all, which was very disappointing. He said it was difficult to change clothes with women around, and he wished it was a men's bath instead of a mixed one. In the women's bath, the manners of the foreigners were poor, leaving their bathing suits discarded, and it was not a relaxing experience. The open-air bath attached to the indoor bath was more relaxing. Other than that, the meals were delicious, and the room was clean and very nice.

    It was excellent.

It is well worth coming to enjoy this Onsen. We were very grateful for the flexibility in accommodating our train schedule. The breakfast was particularly delicious, and I would love to have the surf clam salad again.
