A wonderful Ryokan filled with thoughtful hospitality

While searching for an Accommodation near Shirakawa-go, we found a Room where each family member could relax and sleep in their own bed, so we booked immediately. Since the entire building is covered with tatami mats, it was very comfortable to stay there. All of the staff provided heartfelt hospitality, the property was impeccably clean throughout, and both the meals and the Onsen were wonderful. We stayed during Obon, and our child was delighted by services such as shaved ice and ring toss. After dinner, when we started to feel a bit hungry again, they offered “yonaki soba” with two types of half-size ramen: soy sauce and Toyama Black. It was delicious. We also accidentally left something behind and contacted them after checkout; they handled it very politely, which we truly appreciated. We would definitely like to stay here again when visiting Shirakawa-go in winter snow as well.

I often stay at Kyoritsu Group Hotels and Ryokans, but this time was disappointing, so I’m posting this review. First, at check-in: even though I had an online Reservation, I still had to fill out a detailed card. It’s been a long time since I’ve had to do that. The explanation was also very long while standing, and the items they explained were not in the Room. I eventually figured it out by scanning a QR code on my phone, but it felt unfriendly. Then dinner: there wasn’t a single dish that tasted good. The service staff were great, and I honestly felt sorry for them having to serve food like that. Breakfast was also poor—the rice was cold, and the seaweed I chose was dry and stale. There’s no point in offering choices like that. The payment Receipt wasn’t even put in an envelope and was folded carelessly. There was also no send-off after checkout. Considering how much I paid, it was far too bad. I won’t stay here again, and it made me reconsider using Kyoritsu Group properties as well.

    Thank you for everything!

I chose this Accommodation because it’s just a few minutes’ drive from Shirakawa-go. At check-in, the front desk area was extremely crowded, there was nowhere to sit, and it felt chaotic... We were required to fill out the guest registry, but since I made my Reservation through IKYU, other hotels often have the information pre-entered and only require confirmation. If you could streamline this process, I think staff would be able to assist guests more smoothly. The riverside location and snowy scenery were wonderful, so I thought it would be nice if the Room had an open-air bath. I also used the lounge, and I think it would be better with a bit more creativity in the snacks—how about Hida beef jerky? The draft beer was very good. The free ramen was also great.

    Overall, it was good.

The check-in explanation was too fast and a bit hard to understand. I managed to follow, but I would appreciate a little more consideration. The Room was clean, quiet, and comfortable for a relaxing stay. Thank you very much.

    Thank you for your patronage.

At check-in, I was shocked to hear that dinner was on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 8:30 PM. However, I managed to adjust it to a time that suited me. It seems the reason was due to a group booking... Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, and the staff in charge were kind, which led me to overeat! If not for the bear warnings, I would have enjoyed a morning walk, but I decided to refrain for safety reasons.

The hotel is in a great location, just 1km from Shirakawa-go, making it easily accessible. The large parking area was very convenient for my self-driving trip. The check-in staff were friendly and helpful, clearly explaining the hotel services and facilities. Their warm smiles made my wife and me feel welcome. Dinner was a beautifully presented Japanese-style set meal with an abundance of delicious dishes. The assigned server provided excellent service, introducing each dish and enhancing our dining experience, leaving a lasting impression! Overall, I truly enjoyed my stay and will definitely return on my next journey.

It was a disappointing property and a disappointing World Heritage site.

This was my first stay, but there was a sewage smell in front of the entrance. Additionally, the hallway on the first floor also had a sewage odor, which left a rather bad first impression. The meals were all visually appealing and delicious. There were no issues with the Room either. Since this is not a Business Hotel, it would be best to have amenities provided in the Room. The Onsen was also good. Lastly, although it's not an issue with the Property itself, I found that the level of hospitality in Shirakawa-go is quite low. If you consider the view from the observatory essential and walking is prohibited during certain seasons with only buses available, then they should increase bus shuttle capacity more significantly; if people are made to wait over an hour, there should be bus queue staff for guidance and assistance—this is standard everywhere else. Moreover, since transportation takes a 100-minute break at noon, those who arrive last at lunchtime may end up waiting another 100 minutes at the observatory if they can't board due to overcapacity on return trips—this is quite detrimental as part of a tour experience. I believe these shortcomings should be compensated by Properties themselves: directly transporting guests to or picking them up from observatories would greatly help everyone involved. Without aiming for such comprehensive management as Shirakawa-go's goal overall operation-wise through Reviews will see fewer visitors despite being a World Heritage site; instead of relying solely on Gassho-style architecture while resting complacently upon it operationally speaking—it’s crucial that visitors can smoothly explore around without stress ultimately leading villages getting dirty otherwise resulting complaints like "it was terrible" or "never coming back again" heard among tourists surrounding us yet personally think Shirakawa-go remains wonderful place hoping improvements ensure current state preserved even three years later down line!

The perfect Stays for visiting Shirakawa-go

There was a wide variety of Onsen and an authentic sauna. The private bath was very pleasing for families. The meals were also fulfilling, and I was able to enjoy the much-anticipated Hida beef and Hoba miso, which were very delicious. I was concerned about the Room being cold, but they provided a heater. On the second floor, my child enjoyed playing with a kendama in the traditional play corner. It would be nice if you could provide books on cat's cradle and origami. It was cold in the snow, but I was able to completely relax. Thank you for the wonderful experience!

    I was able to relax!

It is right after getting off at Shirakawa-go Interchange, but due to following the road to the tourist spot where the Shirakawa-go Gassho-zukuri village is lined up, we couldn't reach it easily because of the traffic jam heading to the tourist area. lol The floor inside the building is entirely tatami, so there are no slippers. When we left our suitcase, they wiped the caster part for us. The staff welcomed us with kind and polite greetings. The reception was handled by a Korean person, and I was impressed by their very good Japanese. The private bath can be used if it's available, and no reservation is necessary. However, there is no shower, so you need to wash in your room or the large public bath. Towels are a bring-your-own pattern from the room, so don't forget!! The meals were delicious and filling, so we didn't need the free Yonaki soba. For breakfast, you can choose between 7:00 and 9:00, and we chose 9:00, had a leisurely breakfast, and headed to Shirakawa-go around 10:30. There was already a light traffic jam, and we were directed to a distant parking lot from the line waiting for a nearby parking lot, but there was a bus shuttle service, and in the end, the distant parking lot was better than waiting in a long line! It was close to Shirakawa-go, and it was a nice property where we could relax. I would like to visit again!
