    Where have all the Japanese men gone?

    It was packed with day-use bathers until 8:00 PM. It must be popular. The area in front of the women’s exit of the mixed-gender “1,000-Person Bath” was especially crowded. When I opened the door, people stared at me and it was frightening. I wish people had the basic manners to at least look away. I walked in confidently, but a young woman opened the door, froze, and went back out. Do Japanese men have no kindness? No sense of shame? Not even the courtesy to cover themselves? It’s such a good Onsen, but this is why mixed bathing culture is disappearing.

    A wonderful accommodation I want to visit again.

    As mentioned in the reviews, the staff at the accommodation were very considerate, and the accommodation itself, with its 100-year history, provided a relaxing and leisurely experience. Meals were served in the room with a variety of dishes, all of which were delicious. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed them. However, the "Sennin Bath" being mixed-gender made it uncomfortable for women to enter. As noted in reviews, there seemed to be men lingering near the entrance, which was disappointing. On the other hand, we appreciated being able to reserve a private bath that was spacious and enjoyable.

    The bath was just as...

    The bath was just as shown in the photos, and it made my skin feel smooth and nice. The number of dishes served was just right, allowing us to finish everything without waste. The Room was spacious enough for two people to stay comfortably. However, the Room had few power outlets, so a multi-plug adapter would be necessary. Overall, I am very satisfied.

    Be sure to order the boat platter for dinner!

    It was a memorable stay with both good and reflective moments. The accommodation had a nostalgic charm from the entrance, which lifted our spirits. It was my first time locking a room with a padlock, and I enjoyed having meals served in the room after such a long time. Although the regular meals didn’t suit my taste much, ordering the sashimi boat platter turned out to be an excellent choice. The main highlight was striped jack fish that melted in our mouths—it was absolutely delicious. Other items like fresh abalone, turban shell, raw whitebait, unique squid varieties were all delightful as well. Even my husband, who usually dislikes tuna, loved the medium fatty tuna (chutoro). The "Sennin Buro" bath lived up to its reputation and was truly amazing. However, it was disappointing to encounter inappropriate behavior from certain individuals waiting near the women’s entrance area for improper reasons ("wani"). After that incident, I avoided using Sennin Buro and opted for women-only or private baths instead—though this issue is not something attributable to the accommodation itself. Additionally, my husband noticed many small whitish insects around the shower area of Sennin Buro's washing space. We reported this to reception but unfortunately saw no action taken during our stay. Considering current concerns about pests like bedbugs worldwide today—prompt extermination of such issues would be appreciated. The staff at this ryokan were kind and made our stay comfortable overall. We highly recommend ordering their sashimi boat platter—it will undoubtedly enhance your satisfaction during your stay!

    This is the ultimate Onsen Ryokan!!

    Previously, I visited for a day-use Onsen, and the "Sennin Bath" (mixed bathing) was truly amazing, so this time I stayed overnight. The Onsen with its nostalgic atmosphere allowed me to relax both my mind and body completely—absolutely no complaints! Haha On top of that, the meals served in the room were incredibly delicious... It might not be suitable for those seeking a clean and modern hotel-like experience, but it's the perfect accommodation to unwind and escape from daily hustle and bustle. I would love to stay here again if I have another chance!

    A place to purely enjoy an Onsen Ryokan

    I stayed alone for work in Shimoda. It was disappointing that meals couldn't be included for one person, but the overall satisfaction was excellent. It seemed nonsensical to focus on amenities or service in such a place. It was a very comfortable Ryokan to purely enjoy the Onsen. Next time, I would love to stay for leisure and enjoy the meals as well.

    Accommodation

    I occasionally use this place as accommodation for scuba diving. The atmosphere of the historic building is very nice. It's about a 5-minute walk from the station, and there are convenience stores, home centers, and 100-yen shops nearby, so it's okay if you forget something. Meals are not provided for single occupancy, but there is a convenience store. There are also two private hot spring baths. The station is one stop before Izukyu-Shimoda Station. Why not try using it once?
