    Cost-effectiveness is...

    As a pet-friendly accommodation, some compromises are understandable, but honestly, it was not clean. Pet wipes, insecticides, and repellents were scattered at the entrance for free use, which was convenient but left a poor first impression for excited guests upon arrival. There was no designated area to wash pets' paws (or perhaps there was one that I missed). The room lacked proper deodorization; even keeping the windows wide open for a while didn’t help. Implementing ozone deodorization might be beneficial. The slippers provided were fabric and non-disinfectable, making them far from hygienic. The building overall felt old and cheap—like an old house repurposed as a vacation home. The room floors had tile carpets that were pet-friendly but not particularly sanitary. Hallways and stairs featured worn wooden flooring with inexpensive anti-slip mats attached. Meals were a mix of Japanese and Western styles with effort put in but weren’t particularly delicious. Dog meals consisted of boiled meat and vegetables available buffet-style without any special touches or creativity. Staff members were understandably dog lovers and very kind. The bath facilities included both outdoor baths and indoor ones; however, alternating them by gender daily would have been appreciated. While not large in size, they seemed appropriate given the building’s scale. Both the bath area and changing rooms had windows that could be opened to alleviate any sense of confinement slightly—but note there is no view whatsoever. There were two spacious dog runs available; however, it was disappointing that there weren’t chairs or tables for owners to use while supervising their pets outside. On the positive side, waste disposal bags provided at the entrance’s storage area showed thoughtfulness. Overall, if accommodation costs were lower this might have been acceptable—but at this price point with these features—it felt like poor value for money typical of pet accommodations specifically designed as such. Unfortunately rated as non-repeatable—hope this review helps!

    Dining with Pets

    I have stayed at numerous properties with my pet in the past, but this was the first time I could dine at the same table with my pet. Usually, I would leave my pet alone in the room, feeling reluctant as I headed to the dining area, and I would cut my meal short to return to the room early out of concern. In contrast, at Shunka, a cushion for pets was provided at the same table, and the warm greetings from both the female and male staff made it possible to enjoy a relaxing and pleasant meal. Many of the other guests seemed to be regulars, creating a friendly and cheerful atmosphere that enhanced their stay. The jokes from the owner, who I believe was the host, were also delightful, making it a wonderful property that I would love to visit again.

    A pet-friendly and homey Stays.

    It was a one-night stay. The staff were very kind and made us feel at home, making it an enjoyable stay for both my husband and our beloved dog. Despite our late check-in and delay for dinner due to our circumstances, they were very accommodating. Thank you very much. The food was also very delicious. If we have the opportunity, we would love to stay again. Next time, we will definitely check in on time, so please look forward to it (laugh).
