    It was a wonderful accommodation.

    This was an Accommodation I’d wanted to visit for a long time. I was hoping for the riverside bath and a starry sky, but due to the river running high and cloudy weather, it didn’t happen. Still, the Accommodation was wonderful, so I was completely satisfied. At check-in, we were served delicious homemade sweets: hanamame beans with shiratama in kinako and kuromitsu. The proprietress and staff were very pleasant, and the hot spring bath—fed directly from the source—overflowed generously and felt amazing. The meals were beautifully presented using local ingredients, and we were happily full. The Room was clean and relaxing, with the sound of the river (it was quite loud this time because of the high water, but I’m sure it’s usually soothing). It was also lovely to see small wildflowers displayed throughout. It’s an Accommodation I’d love to stay at again and again. We will definitely return.

    Highly recommended Accommodation.

    The Accommodation staff were very kind and helpful. The Room was clean, and the vegetable-based dishes were delicious—especially the soy milk hot pot at breakfast. I’d love to have it again. Shirayaki Onsen, about a 2-minute walk from the Accommodation, and the Onsen that bubbles up from within the river were a first for me. If you love Onsen, you should visit at least once! Check-in is from 14:00 and check-out is at 11:00, so being able to enjoy a long stay is great. However, if you’re coming by bus from Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station, services are limited—so arrival tends to be around 14:40 for check-in, and you’ll need to leave by 10:00 at check-out or you may end up waiting several hours for the next bus.

    A solid, no-frills accommodation.

    I visited Shiriyaki Onsen, famous as the “finishing bath” of Kusatsu. True to the name Hoshigaoka Sanso, it has a long-established, traditional atmosphere. But once inside, I found it clean and well maintained, with a real sense of care throughout the building. There were also artworks by Tsutaro Kataoka on display, and despite being called a “mountain lodge,” it has great taste and style. The Room was a Japanese-style twin in a single space. From the Room you can see the mountain stream, along with stones and rocks discolored by the minerals in the Onsen water. Like the rest of the property, the Room felt clean—simple rather than flashy. It’s perfect for a quiet retreat. As for bathing, fitting for an “after-bath,” the water is mild with no noticeable smell or strong characteristics. I heard it contains a lot of iron; perhaps that’s why you can see orange-colored deposits drifting in the water, matching the orange tint seen in parts of the stream. With only a small number of Rooms overall, I was able to relax at length. The meals were excellent as well. They don’t rely on luxury ingredients—just local produce—but everything is prepared and paired so skillfully that it was truly delicious. I ended up having multiple refills of rice at both dinner and breakfast. Hospitality was also outstanding: everyone served us with such warmth that looking back, it really was a wonderful stay. This is an Accommodation that makes me think my next visit should be a Multiple Night Stay. I’ll be back again.

    It was quiet and relaxing.

    A quiet and rustic mountain lodge nestled deep in the mountains, offering a relaxing stay from 2:00 PM to 11:00 AM. The Onsen was never crowded, with clear and refreshing water that felt wonderful. The meals lived up to their reputation, featuring seasonal ingredients and were absolutely delicious. An accommodation that exceeded its value—truly satisfying!

    Almost perfect

    The food was truly delicious. The service was excellent, and the accommodation was kept very clean. The bath had a charming atmosphere, though the outdoor bath was a bit too hot. The overall ambiance of the accommodation was also very pleasant. There were almost no complaints.

    I had a relaxing stay.

    It was an accommodation I had always wanted to visit. Located in a quiet mountain area, the environment was serene. The building was clean and well-maintained. Although we stayed in a detached room, it was stylish and very comfortable. I was amazed by the onsen water flowing abundantly into the room's bath. The open-air bath in the main building, situated by the river, offered a beautiful view and a relaxing experience. Next time, I would love to stay in the main building as well. The meals were centered around local ingredients and were absolutely delicious. At night, soaking in the room's bath allowed me to enjoy pure tranquility with no outside noise—just peaceful moments. The quality of the onsen water was soft and exceptional. Now I understand why it's so hard to secure a reservation here! The next day at Lake Nozori, we enjoyed its deep blue waters, daylilies (Kisuge), and clear skies—it was breathtakingly beautiful! If given another chance, I would love to stay here again someday. Thank you very much to all of your staff!

    I still love this accommodation.

    This was my second stay. This time, I booked two rooms with my daughter and her spouse, staying in adjacent rooms closest to the bath as we did last time. The rooms are simple but quiet, and the sound of the flowing river is very soothing. The bath is nearby, making it convenient to check if it's available. As before, dinner was delicious with generous portions—very satisfying. I especially love the signature cheese chawanmushi! Breakfast was also delightful, from fresh salad to homemade yogurt; everything was tasty, making our stay enjoyable until the end. Regarding the bath: I have a medical condition that causes numbness in my legs, so walking on the stone-paved floor of the bath area was quite painful and challenging for me. Even my healthy husband found it slightly uncomfortable at times; elderly guests might need to be cautious about their footing here. Slippers are provided and can be used for better comfort. Overall, this is an excellent accommodation that I truly love—I will definitely return again!

    I want to make this my regular accommodation when visiting Lake Nozori.

    I stayed at this accommodation for the first time in a year to visit my favorite Nozori Lake. While the facility is not new, it is well-organized and clean where it matters most, reflecting a deep respect for nature. It’s a very comfortable place to stay. The warmth of the staff, the high-quality onsen water, and above all, the meals are exceptional. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, featuring seasonal and local ingredients. Due to heavy rain increasing water levels, I couldn’t bathe in Shima Onsen's river bath but instead went on two drives around Nozori Lake. The lakeside was adorned with blooming azaleas—a truly peaceful spot. By the way, after decades, bamboo flowers are blooming on Mt. Hachiken (though this means some bamboo has started to wither). The combination of Hoshigaoka Sanso and Nozori Lake is simply perfect. I definitely want to visit again!

    Excellent meals, baths, and hospitality.

    As soon as we arrived at the parking lot, we were warmly greeted. From this hospitality at the start to the farewell at the end, we enjoyed a very pleasant time and space. Wildflowers were subtly arranged in various places. The windows were polished so perfectly that they looked as if they were open. From the window, we could see blooming wildflowers, hear the sound of a flowing river and birds chirping—it was truly a relaxing and healing experience. The meals were, of course, perfect—everything was prepared with care. This has become an accommodation I would love to visit again in another season.
