    I was happy to be ab...

    I was happy to be able to choose matcha as the welcome drink. The sweets served were cute and nice. The whole Ryokan had a charming atmosphere and felt very pleasant. Both dinner and breakfast were very delicious. It would have been even better if the bath had been maintained a bit more.

    That’s disappointing...

    This was an Accommodation I had stayed at many times, but this time my impression changed completely. I used to like the folk-art style interior and the continuously flowing hot spring water. This time, I chose a renovated twin-bed Room with a bath. The first surprise was an old floor-standing air conditioner. When I switched the settings because it felt cold, I found the vent extremely dirty, with an unbelievable buildup of dust. It couldn’t be wiped off at all with tissue. The toilet’s washlet was broken. Since I arrived late and didn’t want someone coming to fix it at night, I reported it at checkout. The hinoki bath in the Room also felt strange—the bottom of the tub was slimy. At first I wondered if it was due to the spring quality, but it didn’t seem right. There was also a notice asking guests to conserve because fuel oil prices have risen; I understand that situation, but if you ask guests not to drain the bathwater plug, it makes me uneasy—how long has that “continuously flowing” water been sitting there? I don’t mind old Facilities or an older building structure at all—it has more character than a cookie-cutter Ryokan. But only if it is clean. It really felt like everything had changed.

    An open-air bath overlooking a winter-bare rushing stream

    Follow the river uphill, cross the bridge, and then cross the Iida Line railroad crossing; from there the road becomes narrow, so you need to be mindful when passing oncoming cars. This is right in front of Yuya Station, and the Accommodation is located there. The wide unpaved parking lot across from the Accommodation can make carrying luggage a bit difficult in rainy weather. This is an old but well-kept Ryokan with a charming atmosphere: wooden walls, wooden floors, wooden chairs and tables—plus an irori hearth and glass windows. The wide, sturdy wooden staircase is somewhat steep. The renovated Room features wooden furniture and fittings with an earthen-wall-style interior design. Double-glazed windows—yet it still feels cold. There is a stone-and-wood scenic bath already filled with hot water. Outside the bath and terrace windows lies the fast-flowing Ure River valley. In summer, removing the inner doors likely turns it into a semi-open-air bath. It would feel refreshing to enjoy a bottled beer from the refrigerator while looking out at the river. The cuisine served at semi-private dining tables is excellent, though it may be uncomfortable if neighboring guests are loud.

    On our way back from...

    On our way back from staying at Hazu Gassho last autumn, we stopped by Hazu Annex, and this time we decided to stay here. This is an Accommodation with free-flowing hot spring water direct from the source. The room with a private Onsen overlooking the mountain stream (living room + twin beds), 37 m² (twin), was very comfortable. The Horai beef was also delicious. We would like to stay again.

    Onsen is great.

    The Ryokan was quiet and pleasant, likely because it was a weekday. The Onsen is located along the river, and the open-air bath is excellent. The meals were average, but it was disappointing that the main dish was sukiyaki. While it's not a bustling Onsen town, it's a good place to relax.

    A serene and retro Ryokan

    Upon arrival at the hotel, we were welcomed in the lobby with a view of a beautiful river flow, along with matcha and Bupposo manju, which heightened our travel excitement. The ryokan is old, so the facilities are modest, but the use of genuine wood added charm and a retro feel that made it very relaxing. The open-air bath overlooking the gentle stream of Ure River was exceptional; we bathed multiple times and felt truly rejuvenated. The post-bath area offered chilled vegetables and cold drinks, which was a delightful touch. Dinner featured Hōrai beef shabu-shabu in a zunda hot pot—a first-time experience for us. The beef was tender, and the cabbage in the zunda hot pot was incredibly delicious, creating perfect harmony overall. This is an accommodation we would love to revisit!

    Preferred Onsen Accommodation

    Discovered while searching for an Onsen accommodation to stay during the New Year! I prefer Onsen accommodations with a hidden gem feel, not overly polished. This one was perfect. The Onsen was truly amazing... The cloudy water, the atmosphere of the open-air bath and large public bath, and the scenery were all excellent. Since I chose a room with a private Onsen, I could enjoy natural hot spring water anytime by simply turning on the tap. I'm grateful to IKYU for helping me find this place!

    It was very comfortable.

    We visited as a family of three, including our 2-year-old daughter, traveling by car. From the check-in process, we were warmly welcomed (the tea and sweets were much appreciated), and the atmosphere of the Ryokan was delightful. While there are some steep stairs and slightly older areas within the facility, the guest room itself was very comfortable, and we thoroughly enjoyed the private open-air bath in our room. The food was delicious, and we especially appreciated their thoughtful consideration for our daughter. We would love to visit again!

    Charming and delightful accommodation

    From the lobby and the bath, you can enjoy views of the river's flow at this charming, traditional-style accommodation. It may not appeal to those who prefer modern luxury designs, but I found it to have a wonderful atmosphere. I stayed in a uniquely designed room on the first floor, closest to the river, with two connected spaces. There were two fan heaters in the room, which made me think winters might be quite cold here. However, when I asked the head hostess in the morning, she mentioned that it doesn't get too cold in this area and that snowfall is rare but delightful when it happens. The dining area directly above my room had just been renovated and was very clean; however, I could hear footsteps during cleanup after meals—this was a slight downside for me. Still, as someone who enjoys listening to river sounds, I was satisfied overall. The meals featured sukiyaki with Horai beef as the main dish—the meat was incredibly delicious! While all dishes were tasty, I would have appreciated some more local specialties unique to this region. This has become one of my favorite ryokans that I'd love to visit again!

    The bathroom in the Room is...

    This time, I reserved a room with an onsen. I intended to take a relaxing bath while gazing at the river, but unlike the photos on the official website, it was frosted glass and I couldn't see outside. If I had known this, I would have chosen another room. Also, the amount of hot water in the room's onsen was limited and by the next morning it had completely stopped. Additionally, information about Wi-Fi availability and password, as well as charges for drinks in the room's refrigerator were unclear and needed to be asked about from our side, which left me with mixed feelings. However, I thought the meals were delicious.

    One-parent trip with children

    I stayed here for one night on my way back to Kansai from Kanto, thinking it would be a good halfway point. The gentleman at the front desk was very kind, and even though I arrived early, he offered me tea and snacks and provided information about the surrounding area. He also hurried with the preparations, which was very helpful. During my stay and at checkout, he showed concern for my children and offered to take a commemorative photo, making it a wonderful trip. It was my first solo trip with my two children, so I was honestly more anxious than excited, but I ended up having a great time. The food was also delicious. I couldn't go to the open-air bath because my children are small (I thought it would be dangerous to watch two children in the large bath, so I refrained), but I would like to try it next time.
