We had a relaxing stay.
I booked while feeling uneasy because some negative Reviews stuck with me. In the end, if you don’t expect too much, you can be satisfied. The sukiyaki catering was generous and very satisfying. Breakfast was served individually rather than buffet-style, so we could eat at a relaxed pace. Drinks, rice, and pork miso soup were self-serve with free refills. Since it was a cool day—almost chilly—our dog stayed in a crate in the car. Honestly, it was a hassle that check-in/out and breakfast were at a Hotel about 5 minutes away by car. You’re given a map for the cottage, but it’s extremely hard to understand. I wish they would place arrows or signs at key turning points on site to make it clearer. The roads are narrow, and at night you’ll definitely get lost. The short set of steps from where you park to the cottage is tough. With lots of luggage for both people and our dog, you can’t use a cart either. It probably depends on the Room, but there was a full set of kitchen items, which was very convenient. No seasonings are provided. The large fridge and having plastic wrap available were small but helpful touches. Tap water is drinkable as-is, but if that concerns you, it’s better to bring your own drinks. The fridge is empty. There was only one bath towel and one smaller towel (the size you’d take into an Onsen bathing area) per person, which was inconvenient—I’d love two of each. Also, please provide newer towels; the ones for dogs were fluffier and made me wonder which were meant for people. I was very concerned about dampness in the closet where the bedding is stored and in the connected wardrobe area. It would be better managed with a dehumidifier. The insects I worried about were within an acceptable range; given the surrounding environment it can’t really be helped, so if you can’t handle bugs you should look for another Accommodation. The building is honestly old, but the Facility has been updated and everything was kept clean. Because it’s a standalone house-style building, it was very quiet and relaxing. There are no loungewear pajamas and amenities are minimal—so it’s different from staying at a Hotel—but checkout is 11:00 so we could take our time and enjoy things at our family’s pace overall we were very satisfied. Choosing no meals might also be good: shop at places like Tsuruya or local supermarkets/roadside stations (michi-no-eki) and prepare things yourself. That way you can stay with your dog all day too.

The building is completely different from the photos, and there is a steep slope from the parking area to the building.
WanPara was a Facility I loved, but Coco Tateshina was the worst. Lately, I feel like there have been many disappointing stays booked through IKYU. Because it had been renovated, I chose a higher grade instead of the standard option and was really looking forward to it. It’s true that the bath and kitchen were clean and the amenities were well stocked. However, moving luggage from the parking area is difficult because of steep stairs, and the exterior looked nothing like the photos—it felt like an abandoned building. On a rainy day, bringing in luggage would be especially hard. As expected, there are insects. This time a paper wasp got into the Room, and even I—someone used to bugs—panicked. The insect spray provided was only for flies and ants, and there were no tools to catch insects. Since we had our dog with us, I also hesitated to use insecticide indoors. When I called the front desk, they brought a wasp spray—but it was an outdoor type that sprays up to 12 meters. It’s dangerous around dogs and absolutely not something you can use inside where pets are present. In the end I managed to kill it with a magazine I had brought myself, but paper wasp stings can be quite painful. After that no dangerous insects appeared, but ants and moths still came in from somewhere even with the windows closed. The Room smelled strongly of ammonia; I couldn’t tell whether it came from the bathroom drain or kitchen drain, but the bathroom smell was particularly bad. The toilet is a portable/simple type. We didn’t add meals, but at night we were too scared to even step outside our Room. I’ve stayed several times at their main Hotel near Lake Megami so I felt reassured at first, but perhaps management has changed—the front desk staff atmosphere also felt very different from before. I had been looking forward to using the dog run as well, but it seemed unmaintained and overgrown. Even on a sunny day it felt dark inside and unsafe for letting my dog run freely, so we didn’t use it. The management building also looked abandoned and wasn’t usable. I love Tateshina Highlands, but I don’t think I will ever stay here again.

Coolness only
I reluctantly used this place as a summer retreat, but the service was terrible. It was so dark that it took an hour to find the Room, and even after calling for directions, the explanation in broken English was unhelpful. The map provided was too small to read for those with poor eyesight, so we gave up on going to the large public bath. The breakfast venue was full, so we were placed in a separate Room with a very poor selection of food. It was an extremely unpleasant experience. No matter how affordable it is, I do not recommend it.

The location is perfect for a summer retreat. The villa is old, which is understandable. It would be helpful to have information about local restaurants, grocery stores, and activities readily available.

The staff were very helpful and attentive.
This was our first time staying at Tateshina Wanwan Paradise Cottage. Not only was the check-in service excellent, but when our planned two-night stay suddenly had to be shortened to just one night, the front desk staff handled our checkout without showing any displeasure. The cottages are surrounded by many trees, and we enjoyed pleasant morning walks. I have stayed in various cottages for over 25 years. Depending on the location, some have had a musty smell or were not well cleaned, but that was not the case here—the Room was clean and well maintained, which was great. However, I was surprised by the number of insects. Given the setting, I understood that some insects were to be expected, but their size and quantity were unlike anything I have experienced before. That was the only disappointing point. If more measures could be taken to prevent insects from getting inside, I believe guests would be able to enjoy an even more comfortable stay.

Birch and Snow
I wanted to stay another night. I was able to relax with my beloved dog among the birch trees and the silver world. For dinner, I chose beef sukiyaki. It was very satisfying. It was unexpected that there is a 600 yen fee for cottage users to use the bath, and that the accommodation fee for dogs was nearly 5,000 yen. I think it's expensive, especially since there were hardly any facilities other than a toilet. It would be even better if there were discounts on lift tickets at nearby ski resorts.

I was able to relax.
During my 3-night stay, I was given the freedom to feel like I was at my own vacation home, allowing me to relax. In a typical hotel, someone usually enters the room for cleaning or to change towels (which makes me think I have to go out for that), but here, towels for the 3 nights were provided all at once, and when I felt like cleaning a bit, I could use the quick wiper available in the room, so I had no inconveniences. The building is probably old, but the interior was nicely renovated. However, some of the terrace floorboards were rotten and had holes, so if that could be fixed, it would be perfect. The view of the Harvest Moon and the full moon the next day, followed by the sixteenth night moon from this terrace, was amazing! I was able to refresh a lot with my beloved dog. Thank you very much!
