    I think it’s pretty average.

The last time I stayed, the Room was very old, but this time it was clean. However, there were a lot of bugs, which was difficult. At night, the front desk staff were on their phones and chatting, which was a bit disappointing. Since the front desk represents the Hotel, I felt it was unfortunate. I wish there were a bit more variety in the meals. The selection of tempura and sushi felt lacking. The bath facilities were excellent, and I think sauna lovers will really enjoy them.

    We had a relaxing stay.

We stayed with four friends. The building is old, but the Japanese-style room was spacious. The restroom was a bit hard to find, but we were able to use it without any issues. The dining area was also large, and thanks to staggered meal times it was rarely crowded. There was a wide variety of dishes, so we could enjoy our meal at a relaxed pace. Both baths require taking stairs from the entrance, so I felt it might be difficult for guests with mobility issues. One of the baths had water that was too lukewarm, so we couldn’t stay in for long. The parking lot is far away, but they provided Shuttle Service by car, which was helpful. Thank you for your hospitality.

    Cleaning service

There is something I always find disappointing. It is that cleaning in out-of-sight areas—such as behind the TV or around the Facility next to the elevator on B1—does not seem thorough, with dust left behind. I always think it would be much better if those areas were cleaned properly as well.

    It’s supposed to be a long-established place, but still…

Fair value for the price. The Room is large, but it may be better suited for families or groups. Don’t expect too much from the meals. The bath is spacious. The staff level doesn’t really feel like hospitality. A nearby Accommodation is my regular place, and there the quality matches the price. As an average Accommodation, this one may be acceptable.

    Delicious buffet dining

Stayed on December 22nd. The heating of the air conditioner installed in the room only produced a weak airflow and it was cold. The hallways inside the accommodation were also cold. The buffet dishes were all delicious no matter what I tried. It was a bit disappointing that there were no Onsen eggs for breakfast, but overall I was satisfied.

Praise for the Complimentary Shuttle Service Staff

On a four-night stay, the hallways are unlit and the Facilities inside the Accommodation are closed from 10:00 to 15:00, so it’s difficult to spend that time in the Room. I adjusted my schedule by visiting Hoheikyo Onsen on day two and Koganeyu Onsen on day three, but by day four I expected to stay inside—however, that experience is reflected in this review. Sadly, even at this Accommodation I encountered a female staff member whose rude behavior was enough to ruin an otherwise enjoyable dinner. These days I often see unpleasant service everywhere, but I would like to praise the driver of the complimentary Shuttle Service departing the Accommodation on October 25.

    Traditional Onsen

I stayed at Shika-no-Yu again for the first time in decades, after visiting with my family long ago. The Room was assigned by the hotel; I was happy with a Japanese-style room, though the sink and toilet were right next to each other and a bit inconvenient—overall, I was satisfied. The meals didn’t include anything surprising, but there were many home-style dishes and I was satisfied with that as well. The Onsen water was excellent as expected, but going up and down the stairs twice was quite tough. The parking lot was in Lot No. 2 and a bit far, but the Shuttle Service staff were kind. I also wish there were a Plan that includes access to Hanamomiji’s Onsen.

We believe this offers great value for money.

I ended up extending my stay in Jozankei Onsen at short notice and stayed at Shika-no-Yu. Considering the price, I was satisfied. For this rate, the baths are well equipped, dinner is included, and breakfast is also provided. Regardless of whether the facilities feel old or what you think of the food quality, it deserves a positive rating. I think most guests will be satisfied. However, there was one major issue. There were many guests with traditional full tattoos (not small fashion tattoos) using the baths openly—at least five people. Even though staff could clearly see them, there was no guidance or enforcement. This cannot be dismissed as “it’s a casual Hotel.” It lowers the dignity of Jozankei Onsen itself and should be addressed.

It was a good Onsen at a reasonable price.

The Room was very clean, and we were able to relax comfortably. The Onsen was also excellent—we enjoyed alternating between baths at different temperatures, and the sauna facilities were great. The breakfast buffet was very delicious. Choosing the dinner buffet was a slight mistake; I think upgrading a bit would have been better, but at this price, the buffet is more than sufficient. I gave it 4 stars because the toilet in the Room didn’t flush very well, but since it’s an older building, it can’t be helped. Overall, it was a very good Accommodation.

The bath and the Room were very relaxing. The buffet dining area also had high ceilings, making it a comfortable space.

I booked a random Room, but...!

I made a one-night, two-day Reservation for Golden Week 2025. Although it was hard to secure a Reservation, I was able to book the “Room assigned at random” Plan, so I spent the days leading up to my stay feeling excited and nervous. On the day of arrival, as I proceeded with check-in, I was told, “Even though you booked a random Room assignment this time, we’ve prepared a really wonderful Room for you...!”—I was so surprised that I asked them to repeat it. When I got to the Room, it turned out to be a Japanese-modern deluxe twin. I didn’t know that could happen—I was truly happy. The Facility also had a great range of amenities (the sauna was amazing), and I had a very fulfilling one-night stay. It made me love Onsen even more.

    Issues with buffet service

We stayed for a Multiple Night Stay during Golden Week. The guest room was in an older Accommodation, but it was well maintained, and aside from the table not being properly wiped down, there was nothing in particular that bothered us. What was disappointing was the restaurant. On the first night, we went at the start time and ended up waiting in line for the buffet. So the next morning we came 15 minutes before closing, but a staff member made a snide remark about us coming at that time, loud enough for us to hear. The following morning we came at the start time again, but this time there were entry restrictions and we had to line up at the entrance. It’s not that we wanted to eat a lot just because it’s a buffet—we simply didn’t want to wait in line. If you don’t want to queue, what should you do? Overall, it was very disappointing service, and I hope both staff hospitality and operations will be improved. As for the food, both variety and taste were good for a buffet. The Onsen and lounge were very comfortable as well, which made it feel like such a missed opportunity.

The Onsen is great, but some foreign guests’ manners are extremely poor.

This was my first stay in over 10 years. What I liked: (1) the open-air bath and sauna, (2) a complimentary Room upgrade, (3) the courteous service from the Shuttle Service driver to the parking lot, (4) the lobby sound system and coffee service, (5) the dining Facility, and (6) free massage chairs. What I didn’t like: (1) the attitude of the parking attendants (their explanations were not helpful), (2) poor manners by some overseas guests in the dining area—for example, groups speaking Chinese loudly and causing a disturbance, groups speaking Chinese taking food without lining up properly, and a Korean-speaking guest monopolizing two coffee machines—and (3) the dinner buffet selection: sushi was limited to only three types (salmon, steamed shrimp, and squid), with no sashimi or steak—and of course no crab. The baths were great, but it was disappointing that some guests’ behavior during meals was so poor and that the menu felt far too cheap. If these issues can be improved—both guest etiquette in the dining area and a review of the meal menu—I would definitely like to stay again.

Onsen water, meals, and the room are excellent.

Overall: On the day (mid-February), the snow was very severe, and due to ongoing snow removal work, it was quite a challenge to reach the Property, but overall I am satisfied. Praise: My frostbitten hands, dry skin, and itchiness really recovered overnight. The efficacy of the Onsen water is amazing. Caution: There are quite long stairs in the bathhouse (from the entrance, the washing area and bath Facility are located downstairs), so while entering is fine, exiting after soaking in the Onsen felt a bit dangerous for elderly people. Perhaps it's a reminder not to stay too long and get dizzy. Meals: Both dinner and breakfast are buffet style. Carts are available for use, which leaves a good impression as even those with mobility issues can serve themselves with ease. I couldn't figure out how to use the rice machine; however, mixed rice could be served from a rice cooker using a ladle type which seemed easier to use. The coffee was delicious as well as morning milk. Building Overall: The interior is very comfortable; I didn't feel cold enough that I could sleep without air conditioning. Although relatively old in terms of years passed since construction giving an undeniable sense of age; there were few signs inside causing my parents some confusion (laughs). You can also use baths at neighboring Facility Momiji-san next door but it’s quite far making you feel chilly along way there.

The meals and sauna were excellent.

I visited a Ryokan in Jozankei for the first time in a while. It seems there was a sudden cancellation during the busy year-end period, so a room became available, and since I had no plans for the year-end, I decided to stay. The guidance to the second parking lot was smooth and good. I didn't have high expectations for the room, so it was decent. The small TV gave a sense of the times or history. The meals were good. There was a variety of Japanese, Western, and Chinese-Asian cuisine to enjoy. However, due to the busy period, there was a time limit, and I couldn't help but feel rushed while eating. The Onsen was nice, and the sauna was amazing. The men's sauna was 102 degrees! The women's was dome-shaped and 93 degrees. I don't like the heat, so I got out quickly, but it felt good. It was nice to be able to play table tennis with the family. Is the futon system where you lay it out yourself in the tatami room? I took it out from the closet and laid it out myself to sleep. Is that how it is these days? Overall rating is 4. It was nice to have family time, so I'm glad we went.

Great value for money, a traditional and welcoming Stays

We stayed for a family trip after the New Year. Shikanoyu (Shikanoyu) is an old establishment, so the building is old, but it was well-cleaned, allowing us to have a comfortable stay. I think it might be the best in Jozankei Onsen; the onsen was really great! I love the outdoor bath, which is slightly warm and allows for a leisurely soak. I took my son, who loves games, and he was delighted to enjoy table tennis in a private room. We played as a family for the first time in a while! It's a perfect service to have a 30-minute free reservation! The meals ranged from sushi to ramen, offering a mix of Japanese and Western styles, and everything was delicious! The creativity, like fried buns and DIY monaka, was impressive, making it enjoyable for both the elderly and children. The hotel was fully booked, but the staff's attentive service allowed us to relax. The cost performance is excellent, so I definitely want to stay again. Thank you for the many memories.
