    Very satisfied

    Although the exterior looks a bit old, once you step inside it is wonderful, and the front desk staff were very pleasant. The open-air bath in the Room was extremely relaxing, and I ended up using it many times.\nUnfortunately, we ran into a typhoon on the way back and had to leave without seeing anything, but I would like to visit again when the weather is good.

    Booking together with our sister property is required.

    I stayed for one night on a weekday after the Golden Week holidays. I booked late, so I stayed in Seishokan, which seems to be the oldest building. The Room was spacious enough, the tatami mats were clean, and housekeeping was thorough, but it was a bit disappointing that the floor creaked every time I walked. Dinner buffet offered a wide variety of dishes, and the quality was satisfying. For the baths, I added an on-site Plan (¥1,100) that lets you enjoy a bath-hopping experience at the sister property Shima Tamura, and I really enjoyed soaking in many different tubs. The baths on the Grand Hotel side felt a bit dated, and it was disappointing that the sauna couldn’t be used—possibly due to a malfunction. All staff members were very pleasant and welcoming with warm smiles.

    The bath was great.

    After purchasing the Shima Tamura bath-hopping passport, I was able to enjoy many different baths. The rice porridge cooked with Onsen water at breakfast was very delicious. During my Multiple Night Stay, when I said I didn’t need cleaning, they delivered a basket with a full set of towels and other items to the front of my Room, which was a pleasantly attentive yet unobtrusive service. Since it was a buffet it didn’t bother me, but the dinner selection was exactly the same on both nights.

    The guest room is spacious and comfortable.

    This is a very large Onsen Ryokan in Shima Onsen. It is an older-style Ryokan reminiscent of the bubble era, and the building shows noticeable wear, but the Room we stayed in had been renovated into a Japanese-Western style and was very spacious and comfortable. It also had two sinks. I think it offers great value for money.

    The Onsen is wonderful.

    The large public bath is accessible 24 hours. This time, I chose a Room with an Onsen, so it was truly an onsen-filled experience. The buffet meals were enjoyable with features like customizable hot pots with your favorite ingredients, live kitchen stations for steak and tempura, and plenty of vegetables to eat, which was great.

    Is this the New Year's rate?

    Is it truly sustainable or carbon neutral? Morning and evening meals were almost the same. It seems like the system does not allow negative reviews, making it impossible to share honest feedback. I have used IKYU to visit various Onsen and was almost always satisfied, but I had a disappointing experience during New Year's for the first time. This Ryokan was unlike what I expect from IKYU, and I have decided not to return.

    The meals, both breakfast and dinner, were quite ordinary without any standout dishes. The hot pot at dinner took a long time to cook. While insects are understandable, we would appreciate better management of the dining area.

    Although we arrived ...

    Although we arrived late at 6 PM, the front desk service was excellent, and we were able to relax. Since we arrived late, we enjoyed the baths at two locations in the Grand Hotel at night and four baths in Shima Tamura in the morning. It was a very satisfying stay. Onsen is amazing! Our child wanted to try shooting games, so we went to the venue and received very kind service—thank you so much!

    Hmm, what a pity!

    We chose the Hotel at Shima Tamura instead of a Ryokan this time, as one of our family members uses a wheelchair. Since it was listed on IKYU.com and the photos and pricing on the website seemed promising, we had certain expectations upon arrival. At the entrance, we were warmly greeted by staff with smiles, which raised our hopes even further as we checked in. However, the self-service-like atmosphere reminiscent of a local Business Hotel left us slightly disappointed. As we walked through the corridor to find our Room, we noticed deteriorated handrails and an overgrown rooftop with missing tiles—an unexpected sight that made us question if it was real. Upon entering our Room, there was an outdated sink and a leaking faucet from what seemed like decades ago. Visiting the public bath brought more surprises: worn-out Facilities with numerous "under repair" signs everywhere. The condition of faucets aside, walls looked entirely different from what was shown in photos; they carried not retro charm but visible age and accumulated dirt over years. Even basic items like slippers were only available in one size that didn’t fit properly. That said, the private open-air bath attached to our Room and its garden were newly renovated and enjoyable. The meals offered might be suitable for children’s buffets but lacked local ingredients; additionally, while we opted for all-you-can-drink alcohol service, there were very few options available—both aspects felt disappointing. While aging is understandable for any property over time, necessary investments in maintenance are crucial to avoid giving off an impression close to abandonment or cheapness overall. It was also disheartening that feedback left behind received no response from management. At over 40,000 yen per person per night, this experience did not match its price point at all; however—with excellent hot spring quality—if Facility updates are made in future along with reasonable pricing adjustments based on improvements made—we would consider revisiting again someday!

    Dinner

    The room with an open-air bath and deck chairs was very nice, but I think the garden could use some maintenance. As for the dinner buffet, the steak was delicious, but everything else was not good. It seemed like frozen food was being used. If that part could be improved, it would be great.

    Rooms with semi-open-air baths offer excellent water quality and stunning views.

    Visited with elderly parents. Although we had stayed at Tamura multiple times, we found a great early bird deal at the Grand Hotel and decided to visit for the first time to enjoy the fresh greenery. The buffet meals were more enjoyable than expected, and above all, the view of the river and fresh green maple trees from our room's semi-open-air bath was stunning. The quality of the natural hot spring water was highly appreciated by my father, so much so that we made a reservation for the autumn foliage season during our stay. The staff were all kind and helpful, leaving us with no concerns. While some facilities felt dated, it was within expectations. Seasonal insects are also understandable for this time of year. Looking forward to our next visit!

    I would like to use it again.

    The women who greeted us at the entrance were very kind and welcoming, which left a great impression. During meals, including the foreign staff members, everyone was extremely polite and friendly, making the experience even more enjoyable. Thanks to everyone's excellent hospitality, we had a wonderful time. Thank you so much! Additionally, the barrel open-air bath on the basement floor was incredibly relaxing—it felt like it added years to my life. I look forward to visiting again for another soak in your open-air bath!

    The hot water and the Hotel staff are excellent.

    I stayed in the older part of the hotel rather than the new building. While it was slightly dated with old tatami mats and firm futons, it was not uncomfortable at all. Everything was kept very clean, and the view from the room was fantastic! Considering the accommodation cost, the buffet exceeded expectations. I gave it 2 stars because some of the bath facilities were broken, but the hot water itself was excellent. Being able to bathe almost 24 hours a day was also a great feature. I would love to visit again!

    The staff is excellent.

    I made a reservation here as it was available near the Kanto area just before Golden Week. Perhaps my expectations were not very high, but my satisfaction level far exceeded the Google rating score. While there are some signs of wear and tear in the bath area and the facility's age is noticeable, it is well-cleaned and maintains a sense of cleanliness. The meals gave an impression that matched their price, but I appreciated the focus on steak, which added a nice touch of variety. Thanks to the spacious facility, even during peak seasons, I didn’t feel much stress from crowds. Above all, the staff were exceptionally pleasant and left a lasting impression that surpassed everything else. Their natural yet sincere demeanor conveyed genuine care—whether guiding guests in parking or addressing feedback for continuous improvement. Additionally, I felt that other guests staying here had good manners as well—perhaps influenced by the excellent hospitality provided by the staff?

    Room with Onsen (Leave it to us)

    I booked a room with a bath included, and the room was clean and spacious. The onsen-equipped room was perfect as I went with my children! It would be great if the buffet were more appealing and had more kid-friendly dishes. This hotel is reasonably priced and ideal for an onsen-focused stay.
