    We could see Mt. Yari from the bath.

    Although the weather was fine down below, up in the mountains it was foggy and rainy, so unfortunately even after taking the ropeway it was a completely white world. The open-air bath at the mountain Hotel was great. I was especially lucky to see Mt. Yari appear above the clouds from the mixed-gender open-air bath where you wear a bathing garment. Next time, I plan to come in October to observe the starry sky.

    The food was delicious!

    The pre-dinner plum aperitif was delicious, and this time the food in particular was outstanding. The mountain views from the window were spectacular. I was able to relax in the natural open-air bath. I also really appreciated the thoughtful touches, such as the basket for carrying items to the bath and the tabi socks. Thank you very much.

    This Hotel has a nostalgic atmosphere.

    The food, the Onsen, and the staff were all wonderful. The cable-car-like ride to the large open-air bath was also fun. When getting off, the footing was a bit uneven, and I wish the entrance to the women-only area had a ramp or boards to make it gentler. An elderly person in our group had trouble going up and down those steps. Other than that, we were truly able to relax at a leisurely pace. We would like to visit again.

    The front desk service is not very good.

    I wanted to use the coffee packs I brought with me, but there were no cups in the Room. When I went to the front desk and asked to borrow one coffee cup, I was refused and told to drink the bad coffee they had prepared in front of the front desk in a paper cup instead. The building, Rooms, and Facilities were old and cheap for a Hotel. The service was also poor, so I would not consider staying again. The view from the Room was not good at all.

    Great-value Showa retro Accommodation

    When the local bus arrived in front of the Hotel, staff were waiting and helped unload our luggage. The entrance was decorated with huge figures of Tetsujin 28-go and Astro Boy, and the interior felt more Showa-retro than Scandinavian. The meal, centered on Hida beef, was very filling—nothing mind-blowing, but solidly tasty. The open-air bath reached by a cable car (?) can be a bit dangerous in winter because the roads and stairs may be icy (there are plenty of warning signs), but once you get there you can enjoy a bath with spectacular views. One downside was that perhaps to handle many group guests, plates were cleared as soon as we finished eating, which made it feel quite rushed—I would have liked to eat more slowly. Still, at this price it’s understandable, and I think it’s good value Accommodation.

    This is perfect.

    Staying at this accommodation to relax and do nothing over the New Year was a perfect choice. Enjoying the onsen, lounging in the room, going back to the onsen, and reading with coffee in the lounge when bored—it was simply amazing. The food isn't trendy but is well-seasoned and very delicious. However, it might not appeal to children or younger guests. Also, I felt that instead of forcing tuna sashimi onto the menu, another type of fish would be better. One downside is that the restaurant is too cold. Even dried fish and tamagoyaki were completely cold, so naturally wearing a yukata made my legs feel chilly and stressed during what should have been a relaxing meal time—this needs improvement. A stay of about 3–4 nights is recommended!

    The Onsen was excellent.

    Unfortunately, we couldn't use the open-air bath outside the building due to the rain, but the open-air bath inside was also very pleasant. It was spacious, clean, and featured a natural hot spring flow, which was excellent. Being in the mountains, there were some insects. A few stink bugs appeared in the bathroom and on the bed, but we managed to handle them. While there is a sense of age to the property, it seemed well-maintained and clean. The meals offered a wide variety of dishes—so much that we couldn't finish everything. The Hida beef sukiyaki and hoba miso grill were especially delicious; we'd love to have them again. Overall, I would say the taste was average. The bus stop right in front of the Hotel made it convenient for trips to Takayama Station or Shin-Hotaka Ropeway.

    There were several i...

    There were several issues I couldn't understand, so I will write them down. First, at checkout, despite having already completed the prepayment for the accommodation fee, I was asked to settle the payment again. When I inquired if the prepayment had not been processed, they silently moved to their computer. After waiting for a few minutes, they issued a new invoice without any explanation or apology during this time. Although they said "Thank you," it was drawn out in an unprofessional tone that left me speechless. In the mixed-gender open-air bath, there were foreign male guests who entered completely naked without wearing the provided bathing attire. One even stood upright in full view, which was shocking. Many foreign guests were also taking photos of the bath area with cameras. While there was a small notice elsewhere about this behavior, there were no warnings at the entrance of the bath itself. Some Japanese guests tried to caution them but were not understood and continued taking photos regardless. Is proper guidance being provided to foreign guests? The bath itself is excellent but these incidents are disappointing. Additionally, the room is very dark. While some light from outside streetlights comes through when curtains are open, closing them makes it dim even with all lights on inside. Moreover, there's constant waterwheel noise audible even with windows closed—it sounded like rain falling outside! From the hallway too came koto music sounds leaking through. The grilled fish (Yuanyaki) served during dinner was cold inside and undercooked—not properly heated through at all! However breakfast's seasoned seaweed accompaniment tasted deliciously fresh thankfully!     Delicious meals & amazing open-air baths!!

    The variety of dishes was astonishing. I was so full that I forgot to take my dessert when leaving, but it was kindly kept for me until the next morning. I was deeply impressed by the open-air bath, which you can reach via the world's shortest cable car. During my bath, I was lucky enough to spot a wild squirrel, creating a wonderful memory. Thank you very much!

    The Onsen was excellent.

    Thank you for the wonderful stay. The Onsen had a very pleasant water quality. The open-air bath accessible by cable car to the riverside was quite unique and enjoyable. The room was spacious and comfortable. Both dinner and breakfast were carefully prepared and delicious. All the staff were very kind and welcoming. During the day, we could see Mount Yari, and at night, the Milky Way above us—it was truly blissful. Thank you so much!

    It was a cool Hotel.

    My wife was very pleased with the excellent food. The staff were also kind. Thank you very much. I visited the mixed open-air bath; although the mountains were covered in clouds, which was a bit disappointing, I enjoyed the vast nature all to myself. The monorail was also an interesting ride. However, there were occasional drizzles, and I think having a connecting passage from the Hotel to the monorail station would make it easier to reach without crossing the road or getting lost.

    A mountain resort-style building with a nostalgic Showa-era vibe.

    Good Points: The mixed-gender open-air bath accessible by trolley was enjoyable. The sheets were comfortable, and the bed-making was done perfectly. Concerns: The noise from the refrigerator and the ventilation fan in the Room's bathroom was loud. Dinner had a variety of dishes, but many were quite similar. Clear soup and red miso soup (surprisingly two bowls), warm tofu and cold tofu, grilled fish that seemed like steamed flaked flatfish, and steamed dishes. Both breakfast and dinner included an assortment of pickles similar to those found in casual dining restaurants. I would appreciate an upgraded course with higher-quality dishes, even if portions are smaller.

    Highly Satisfied

    This was my first time staying here. While the building felt slightly dated, the Room and bathroom were thoroughly cleaned, making it a pleasant experience. The meals were satisfying in both quantity and quality, with creative dishes that were delicious.

    It was the Happy Anniversary Plan, but there were no celebratory items or special dishes. Since I made the reservation with that plan, I would like it to be fulfilled accordingly.

    I'm full.

    I discovered this Hotel while searching for a getaway to celebrate my birthday, which fell on the weekend. I wanted to take a break from household chores and was drawn to its charming appearance. The exterior of the Hotel immediately caught my eye, and I loved the antique-style doors of the Room. Upon entering the Room, I was delighted to find a welcome dessert prepared for me—fresh pineapple and bite-sized cakes. They were delicious, and on such a hot day, having fresh fruit was especially refreshing. Bottled water was also provided (one bottle per person), which was much appreciated during this season when heatstroke is a concern. I enjoyed both dinner and breakfast at the Hotel; every dish was incredibly tasty and left me feeling full. The bath facilities were clean and well-maintained, providing much-needed relaxation for my tired body. There were various baths available, but due to the hot weather, I only used those in the South Wing. Additionally, there was a footbath along the way that I tried after breakfast. Though it wasn’t very hot initially, soaking for just five minutes warmed up my entire body—a soothing start to my morning. I rated Guest Rooms & Amenities as 4 because while amenities were satisfactory (◯), there was an unidentified bug in our Room (which I managed with tissue). This slightly affected my overall impression of an otherwise wonderful stay.

    Birthday Trip

    We stayed here to celebrate my partner's birthday. The day before our stay, we requested a birthday service, and you kindly provided a mini cake. Thank you very much; it was delicious. Dinner included A5 Hida beef steak, which was truly amazing and left us impressed. The portions were generous, leaving us completely satisfied. Breakfast featured local dishes like Hoba Miso, which were also very tasty. We enjoyed the baths inside the facility as well as the mixed open-air bath and women-only open-air bath in the separate area. The water quality was excellent, and the separate area was particularly spacious with great views. However, at night it was hard to see our footing clearly, so we had to be cautious not to trip while entering. One minor issue was that the elevator doors closed slightly too quickly, causing contact a few times—this was a bit disappointing. Overall though, it was an excellent experience and we would love to stay again in the future! Thank you very much!

    An open-air bath accessible by lift, where you can relax while enjoying the view of snow-capped Mount Yari. The open-air bath inside the facility is also spacious and soothing. The meals were excellent in quantity, taste, and hospitality, leaving us completely satisfied.

    It seems that many foreign (Western) guests also use this Hotel. The staff includes many foreigners, but they all speak fluent Japanese and provide exceptionally polite service. While French cuisine is common in hotels within Kamikochi, Japanese cuisine is definitely the way to go in Shin-Hotaka! Being able to choose between sukiyaki and shabu-shabu was a nice touch. The grilled fish (rainbow trout) was delicious.

    Hotel Hotaka-so Yama: Disappointed with the rain

    The Room was clean and well-maintained, making for a comfortable stay. The meals were delicious and served at the perfect timing, allowing us to enjoy them until the end. The mixed open-air bath was fantastic. I would love to visit again during the autumn foliage season. However, the road to the Hotel after passing through the tunnel was a bit difficult to find.

    Beyond expectations

    The early reservation discount made the accommodation fee affordable, and although I didn't have high expectations for the meals, both dinner and breakfast were plentiful and delicious. As noted in the instructions, it’s natural to encounter insects and fallen leaves in such a setting. Surrounded by mountains, this retro hotel nestled in untouched nature offered a unique atmosphere not found in fully equipped tourist hotels. This is my first review, but I want to thank the staff for their hard work and cheerful service during these challenging times for securing personnel.

    I stayed at this property for the first time to enjoy the snow-viewing onsen. The outdoor bath outside the building, which is accessed by cable car, was understandably unavailable from 11 PM to 5 AM, but the indoor bath was available from check-in to check-out, allowing me to fully enjoy the onsen. I felt unwell during the meal, and the staff kindly assisted me in various ways, which was very helpful. Unfortunately, the weather was bad, so I couldn't see the Northern Alps (Yari). I would like to visit again when the weather is better.

    It was very good.

    The Onsen was incredibly spacious and wonderful. Soaking in the Onsen while gazing at the snow-capped Mount Yari was an experience that made me realize how delightful an open-air bath can be for the first time. However, since the open-air bath requires a cable car ride, it takes a bit of time for the round trip. The private open-air bath can be locked from the inside, so I think there's no need for a key rental. The meals were excellent in both quantity and quality, and they were delicious. The only disappointment was when I tried to have tea in the lobby after checking out, I was told "It's already over," and I had to reluctantly head home without being able to savor the lingering moments.

    I used it for the first time. Foot baths for a chilled body, stepping outside for photos and then back to the foot bath, after eating, if your legs get cold, back to the foot bath, there was always time to warm up in the circulating onsen foot bath, providing a relaxing time and a sense of security at the property. Both the onsen and foot baths are available 24 hours a day, allowing for a leisurely experience. Even if you fall asleep or take a nap, you can enter anytime. To get to the open-air bath outside, you can take a short ride on a vehicle, which is exciting!

    Classic Mountain Hotel

    The good points are the mountain view from the Room at Shikitei, the region's largest spacious open-air bath, the slope car to the open-air bath, the quantity and quality of the hot spring water, and the footbath and indoor baths that allow for a hot spring tour. The meals, especially dinner. Coffee service in the front area. The classic architecture and the interior unique to a mountain Hotel using plenty of stone and wood. The fireplace area is also luxuriously made. Overall service. It is a wonderful mountain Hotel that makes you want to stay again.
