Tamago Onsen is a wonderful Onsen. The natural spring water is lukewarm, so you can soak and relax at your own pace. The meal had fewer dishes than expected, which was disappointing. Inside the property, there are many paintings by Yumeji Takehisa, which we enjoyed.

    A wonderful accommodation.

Japanese-style double Room with breakfast and dinner included. I also requested a pick-up from Yamagata Station. On the way back, I took the bus to Yamagata Station from the Zao Onsen Bus Terminal, just a few minutes’ walk away. I arrived early, but was able to leave my luggage and explore freely. The staff member who assisted me felt unexpectedly curt, which seemed different from the Reviews. The person who showed me to my Room also didn’t seem to notice a fairly large dead insect right by the door when it was opened. That was disappointing. I was very satisfied with the Room, meals, and baths. The entire building is covered with tatami mats and you take off your shoes, which feels great, and everything was well maintained. All staff were pleasant in both their service and greetings. Since the baths switch between men and women, you can use both areas; I enjoyed the warm feel of wood and traditional atmosphere. Some Reviews said it was small, but as a woman I didn’t find it cramped since there weren’t too many people using it at once. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious—I finished everything. The Yamagata beef shabu-shabu was truly excellent. There is a portable air conditioner in the Room (I think), but because its duct runs out through the window, the top of the window doesn’t close completely tight; I couldn’t help noticing that gap. I saw a similar setup in the lounge as well, so I assumed it’s installed as a measure against summer heat. There is no elevator—only stairs—which I actually liked very much. Around this time of year we could hear spring cicadas (maybe), which was soothing. From the entrance you can see a gentle slope leading down to the main road, along with steam rising from the Onsen—an impressive location. It’s a small but comfortable Accommodation with a warm atmosphere—thank you very much.

    A Relaxing Tatami Accommodation

Used the Shuttle Service from Yamagata Station (transfer at a parking lot near the sister Hotel, Shiki no Hotel). The moment I arrived at Omiya Ryokan, they quickly wiped down my suitcase so I could roll it around inside without worry. It was very comfortable being able to walk around the Accommodation without slippers. Because Zao Onsen’s sulfur content can cause corrosion, they said they do not have an elevator (the stairs were a bit tough, but understandable). The smell really was strong! In the large public bath there were ventilation openings on the wall to prevent sulfur exposure, so it felt a little cold while bathing—but the sulfur-rich Onsen made it worth it. Maybe because it was slightly off peak season, they had availability and upgraded my Room from a semi-double to a standard double. Feeling grateful, I ordered not only a glass of wine at dinner but also an extra mini bottle of Takahata Winery sparkling wine “Yoshi.” I was happy they offered Yamagata wines too—not just imports. The rice was Tsuyahime. The firmness after cooking was exactly how I like it!! It was delicious both at night and in the morning. Usually when using solid fuel for hot pot at the table, staff light it right as you sit down—but I eat slowly while drinking and reading. They kindly told me at the start, “Please let us know when you’d like us to light it.” Such thoughtful service. The grilled American eggplant with cheese also paired perfectly with wine. Since this is a sister property of Kokusai Hotel and Shiki no Hotel, their bath-hopping pass that lets you enjoy day-use baths at those two Hotels is great. Omiya Ryokan is a little farther away, but still walkable; in mid-March the snow on the roads had melted so there was no problem walking there. When I asked staff whether there were still snow monsters (juhyo), they said this year they had already melted… But since I’d come all this way (and even though it’s pricey), I paid for the ropeway and went up to the summit—and there they were! Locals might say those weren’t “real” juhyo anymore, but for tourists they were more than enough. When I sent photos to an acquaintance, they said that when they went before it was so windy they couldn’t even step outside at the top station—so in that sense mine may have been better luck. There weren’t huge thick ones, but since I wasn’t skiing down through them anyway, just being able to enjoy them around the top station was plenty. During peak season there can be very long lines for the ropeway ticket counter/boarding area, so shifting your timing slightly is definitely worth considering.

    First Time at Zao Onsen

I stayed at this Ryokan for my first solo trip to Zao Onsen. The room was spacious and clean, which I appreciated. However, the distance from the entrance to the room was quite far, requiring multiple trips up hallways and stairs to reach the third floor, which was challenging. Given its history, I assume the current layout is a result of several expansions over time. Since there is no elevator, I recommend requesting a room with easier access in advance if you have limited physical strength or are elderly. As for the Onsen itself, I personally preferred the egg-scented bath's water quality. The temperature and smooth texture of the water were very pleasant. However, it was disappointing that the bathtub was small and could only accommodate about three people at a time. From 7:30 PM onwards, there is a rotation system with another bath area. This one had significantly hotter water compared to the egg-scented bath and was too hot for me to enter comfortably. The water quality also seemed different. The meals offered were plentiful and good value for their price point. Additionally, the staff provided attentive service that made my stay enjoyable overall.

    Suitable for women

The entire Ryokan is covered with tatami, which felt very pleasant. Although we checked in early, the woman at the front desk was kind and provided attentive service. The Room reflected the thoughtful hospitality of the Ryokan. The fruits in the refrigerator were also delicious. The Onsen had only four washing stations, so it might be challenging if it gets crowded. The bathwater was on the hotter side; some guests mentioned they couldn't enter because of this. However, there was a rotation system for baths, which was nice. The meals were excellent and showed great attention to detail as well. I was surprised that all staff members were young! One disappointing point was that when seated by the window, I noticed dust on the lattice—it seemed like an area hard to clean properly, which is unfortunate. All staff spoke standard Japanese; however, I would have loved to hear a bit of Yamagata dialect!

    Disappointing Onsen

The bathroom is quite small considering the number of rooms. Especially the Tamago-yu, which feels full with just three people. The source Onsen and bubble bath have a bit more space, but both have limited washing areas, so if all rooms are fully booked, the bathrooms can get very crowded. We recommend using the shared public baths along with our Onsen facilities. In particular, Shimo-yu Onsen is exceptional! The meals and hospitality were excellent, so we would love to visit again with the idea of enjoying the shared public baths for Onsen.

    Highly satisfied!

A trip with a friend. Although I have visited Zao Onsen several times, this was my first time staying overnight instead of a day trip. Based on everyone's reviews, we decided to stay at Omiya Ryokan. The entire accommodation, including the room, was impeccably clean, the meals were delicious, and the onsen quality was outstanding! Above all, the warm smiles and kind words from the staff made our time truly delightful. The bed in our room was very comfortable to sleep in, and looking out of the window at another ryokan nearby gave me a deep appreciation for being in a traditional Japanese onsen accommodation. The tatami flooring throughout the building felt cozy. The layout with stairs going up and down added charm for me personally—it’s perfect for soaking in the atmosphere of this historic onsen ryokan! Plus, it served as light exercise after meals—a win-win! Every dish we had—from Yamagata beef to freshly harvested Tsuyahime rice and even each small side dish—was incredibly delicious. I couldn’t help but overeat because everything was so good! For onsen lovers like us, having Kamiyu (Upper Bath) and Shimoyu (Lower Bath) just steps away is an amazing location advantage. We also greatly appreciated the shuttle service between Yamagata Station and the accommodation both ways. Thank you so much for your hospitality!

    Not worth the price.

I checked in after 3:00 PM, but there was no one at the front desk and I was not greeted. There was no consideration such as helping with luggage on the way to the Room, and there was no explanation about the Room or bedding times. Three of us stayed, but there were only two bath towels. When I asked the front desk to bring another one, I was told that only what was already in the Room would be provided. The air conditioner was not a standard installed unit but a temporary one, and it did not make the Room very cool. However, since the Room was very spacious, we were able to use it comfortably.

Tatami flooring allows you to relax without wearing slippers.

The tatami flooring and the public bath right in front are great. However, there are many stairs, making it unsuitable for the elderly. While the proximity of the bath is convenient, it is a bit small. Due to the age of the building, the cooling facility is a wind fan, which cools moderately well. Unfortunately, there was a drainage area in a corner of the dining area that was dusty and dirty; it seemed like insects might come out from there. I requested to change my seat because of this. It would be better if they cleaned or covered it properly. The meals have slightly declined in quality as well. Although guests can use baths at affiliated accommodations, this time they were unavailable due to cleaning hours without prior notice; we were only informed during checkout, which was surprising. The room itself was spacious and comfortable!

    It was excellent.

I visited on a hot summer day. The staff greeted me with warm smiles, and while the building has a historical charm, it was well-maintained and very pleasant. I especially loved the bath. It’s not particularly spacious, but it has an atmosphere reminiscent of a Ghibli movie. The building felt like a maze (I actually got lost), but that added to the fun experience. I’d love to stay here again during the snowy season!

The atmosphere was pleasant, and the room was spacious and comfortable. The food was satisfying in both quantity and taste. One concern was that the gap between the entrance door and the tatami allowed noise to come through. The Onsen was not very impressive; it felt cramped, and it wasn't easy to relax when others were present. While guests can also use the Onsen at a sister facility, it's not very close, and limited usage hours made it inconvenient. However, overall, considering the price, I found it to be quite satisfactory.

Avoided during winter (mainly targeting inbound customers)

The meals and seasoning are tailored for inbound guests. The accommodation fee also feels overpriced.

The staff's response is good, and it is a very comfortable Ryokan.

I stayed with my family during a ski trip. The meals were very delicious, and the staff's attentiveness was excellent, making it a very good Ryokan. I definitely recommend it. The changing room is cold, but the bath has a nice atmosphere. It would be perfect if the Room's humidifier were a bit more effective. Thank you for making our trip comfortable.
